4 Mistakes I've Made with Memoir Authors: Ghostwriting a memoir is a lot like parenting: a balance between guiding, nurturing, and letting go. And, like, parenting, we learn from our mistakes. Here are mine: 1) Not Setting Clear Expectations I didn't see the importance of having a frank discussion about the author's goals vs. what I could deliver. ❌ Result: Frustration/disappointment on both sides. 2) Oversharing To make an author feel comfortable, I used to share my own related stories. ❌ Result: They fell out of the zone 3) Being Too Easy I'd let them keep a part of their story that was dear to them, but unrelated to their central theme. ❌ Result: Weak storytelling 4) Being Too Tough Sometimes I'd point out a truth that an author wasn't yet ready to confront. ❌ Result: The author became guarded. → Final advice: Let them spew. As memoir ghostwriter Susan Baracco tells her authors: "Imagine that I will burn these pages when we're done. That image will give you permission to not hold back. . . The 5 questions I ask all authors on a discovery call— and that every ghostwriter should be asking: 1. Who is your audience? → What it tells me: Whether you're reader-focused → Why it matters: Your book needs to be market-driven to sell. 2. What is your book about? → What it tells me: Your book has a digestible message. → Why it matters: You'll need a powerful elevator pitch to market your book to agents, publishers, and readers. 3. Why are you writing your book? → What it tells me: Your expectations for the project → Why it matters: Authors can be disappointed when their book doesn't meet their goals for their career, life, or bank account. 4. What are your publishing plans? → What it tells me: You've thought about what happens to your manuscript after it's written. → Why it matters: The publishing world is complex, with many options. 5. The #writing app I can't live without . . . Scrivener is challenging to learn but worth the effort, especially if you write books. I compare it to Photoshop. You will likely use less than 20 percent of its capabilities, but you will come to love that 20 percent. For instance, you can set keywords for every chapter or subsection, which makes thematic organization much easier. This screenshot is from a current project in Scrivener's outliner view, which lets you take a broad look at a number of variables. I may be giving away some of my secrets in developmental editing, but figuring out the central theme(s) for each chapter is a major step forward toward clarity and better flow.
