Wednesday Market Watch - Live Cattle and Feeder Cattle Higher; Soybean Oil Soars Again to a Sixth Consecutive Higher Finish, Bringing Soybeans Along for the Ride It was a strong day for the cattle complex as both the live cattle and feeder cattle contracts closed higher, and the cash cattle market continues to wait for better bids from packers before they'll trade cattle. Meanwhile, the lean hog complex closed mixed, with the nearby contracts receiving more support than the deferred. September KC wheat finished down 8 3/4 cents per bushel, September Chicago wheat was down 7 cents per bushel and September Minneapolis wheat closed down 8 1/4 cents. The September U.S. Dollar Index is trading down 0.327 at 105.080. August crude oil is up $0.82 per barrel at $83.63. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 24 points at 39,308 with the NASDAQ up 160 points at 18,188. August gold is up $32.60 at $2,366.00, September silver is up $1.14 at $30.80 and September copper is up $0.1100 at $4.5290. August heating oil is up $0.0051, August RBOB is up $0.0285 and August natural gas is down $0.018. Class III milk futures were lower early in the day but found support from the increase of barrel cheese and the comeback of block cheese during spot trading. Overall, futures are sideways to lower. There are reports that spot milk loads are unavailable to a few plants this week in the Central region. This is unusual for this time of year as it is a holiday week. This compares to a year ago when spot prices were as much as $10.00 below class. Increased temperatures affecting cow comfort have been noted in many areas. Some areas have also had difficulty harvesting forage due to extremely wet weather. ree-Choice or Loose Mineral Supplementation Free-choice or loose mineral supplementation is a commonly used method to provide supplemental minerals to cattle on pastures. This method provides a complete mineral supplement that is available to cattle at all times, including both macro- and microminerals and necessary vitamins such as vitamins A and E. For more information on vitamins, see the UK Cooperative Extension Service publication Vitamin Supplementation for Beef Cattle (ASC-248). Free-choice minerals are usually granular products designed to be fed in covered mineral feeders (Figure 1). It is important to carefully read the mineral tag on a free-choice mineral product to understand the quantity and quality of minerals being provided in the product. For more information on how to read a mineral tag, refer to the UK Cooperative Extension Service publication Reading the Fine Print: Understanding Mineral Tags (ASC-249). Free-choice minerals are typically formulated for a target intake of three to four ounces per head per day and contain 15 to 25 percent salt. The salt is included to meet cattle's desire to consume salt and meet sodium requirements, but it also helps to limit intake of the mineral product.

It won’t reopen until margins improve or the facility is sold. Any news of a grain facility closing is bad news. This could impact the canola industry, which had been expecting to fill demand from other markets that would be impacted by the regulations. While farmers should keep this news on their radar, they shouldn’t stress about it. Many First Nations are prepared to — and in some cases have been forced to — pursue agriculture-related work on their reserves.
