🥳 Proximity is no longer a ranking factor for LSAs. Here's why this is good news... @CPBarnard was the first to notice that Google updated the LSA help document and removed the mention of "proximity to potential customers' locations" as a ranking factor. Ginny Marvin, @adsliaison, confirmed the update and clarified that while proximity is considered, it's "often not a key indicator of relevancy". This is great news. It was kind of stupid that proximity was ever considered in the LSA ranking algorithm. If a business wants its ad to show across all areas of the city, it should be able to pay to show it. Now, if they would only do the same for service area businesses in the local organic results. Businesses should be able to rank in the areas they specify with service areas, and if you caught my post last week, there are some hints that this might be happening now. Maybe the two are related?! Hitting $1.5M Rev in 3 years is impressive... but should he have sold the firm? Was reflecting on this recent podcast with Jordan Sublette, CPA. Clearly he had rapid success both in growing (and then selling to his successor). Can't help but wonder ... with a firm growing so quickly, did he sell too early? If you want a case study of a commercial product built on an open source community doing it wrong, look at WP Engine right now. The TL;DR is that Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic and co-founder of WordPress, called out WP Engine for profiting ($400M+ in ARR) and not contributing to Wordpress. They're asking for a licensing relationship to recoup some of those profits which would presumably be reinvested in the OSS side of the house. WP Engine and Silver Lake sent a cease-and-desist to Matt/Automattic/Wordpress Foundation/et al. so Mullenweg sent one back and has been vocal about Mullenweg has set a deadline for WP Engine to get on board - his Sept 20th keynote at WordCamp and (allegedly, on his own) updated the official Wordpress documents to include the screenshot below. In my opinion, WP Engine isn't just living the nightmare many companies have when they start to engage open source communities, they're actively pouring gasoline on it.

Is Generative AI the Next Disruptor of SaaS? Renting software better known as Software as a Service - has been the C21st's most successful business models. But could this model be on the verge of a significant shift? Klarna, the consumer credit company, recently announced that it's discontinuing the use of established services like Salesforce and Workday. Instead, they're investing heavily in developing in-house AI solutions powered by generative AI. AI lowers the cost of building home-grown enterprise software. Large corporations that spend tens of millions on SaaS solutions each year might start reevaluating the classic "build or buy" decision. Before generative AI, buying was often the obvious choice. Perhaps those equations are shifting now.
