why did i get into tech? a) i was a UCSB political science major from the bay area looking to get a job b) all the poli sci literature i was reading about the potential of ICT4D (Information Communications Technology for Development) struck me as ignorant of how technology actually worked c) i got the opportunity to learn to code. Plus a magazine i interned at allowed me to mess with their WordPress site and that was the instigation There was a clear personal upside for me to learn how to code and learn about how the internet works. I got Senior Eng offers from Google, Amazon, Uber, Airbnb, Reddit and Squarespace…but if I was to interview again, I would need to study for about a month. I went from dropping out of college and bombing super easy questions during a Codecademy interview to accepting a job offer for $504k/yr. Here's what changed: I found there’s two big things people need to realize in order to start passing interviews more easily. 1. Study the algorithms and patterns, not the questions 2. You need to invest a lot of time (2-3 months at first) These algorithms and patterns are crucial. Research them. Learn them. Always hire a thorough SWE over a speed demon. …If you’re developing a mission critical system with 0 fault tolerance. But don’t assume quality is universally better than quantity. Launching a membership or a spaceship? Greenfield development or legacy code? 10 users or 10 million? Nuance matters. Sometimes a groundbreaking idea requires speed to market. Sometimes your system’s reputation can’t afford another 3 AM incident. Quality and quantity are 2 sides of the same coin. Learn to prioritize each when they matter most.

Stepping Off the Meta Rocketship! After 10 incredible years, I left Meta last month. I had always dreamed of but never really believed I would be working on teams that shipped products impacting billions of lives daily, in areas as diverse as Messaging, Health, and Generative AI. Thank You to everyone at Meta for trusting me with such important work and for being amazing colleagues (also for all the free food! 😊)! - So, why am I doing this? To regain more control over my time and the work I do, and to better balance life’s ~4 important buckets (please check out "Designing Your Life"). - What’s next on the work front?  Take up projects aligned with my mission to “Create new things and make many people happier.” Here are a few directions I’m exploring: * GenAI for Good: Start something new to help make AI more private, safer, and better aligned with humanity’s well-being. I’m thrilled to be brainstorming with a few friends and industry leaders on this. Please ping me if this excites you among all the exciting things in GenAI! * Well-Being: Launching apps and services in the spirituality and well-being space, an area that all of us in our family are passionate about working on. * More of what matters: Focus more on learning, mentoring, hacking, and writing, and do less of what matters less. - How does it feel to quit a dream job? TBH, still unbelievable and a li'l scary to step out of a regular paycheck and a supportive corporate environment that took care of most product/people things. I do miss meeting people. But, after a month of this life, I can say that the biggest feelings mostly sound like "lightness, freedom, optimism, and an openness to whatever life brings". From "tunnel rat" to senior engineer with FAANG on the resume - a TL;DR of my salary journey in tech: 2005-2015: Worked for the MTA in NYC as a Track Worker. I was literally swinging hammers on the rails, laying down tracks. 2015: Attended General Assembly, a 3-month bootcamp, and learned how to code. Quickly resonated with Front End development. Was the 1st in my class to get a job offer and by the summer I was working at Accenture. This represented an $11k raise from the MTA. 2016: Gave myself a $22k raise and accepted a job at L2 Inc. My first startup! I learned React here as well. Good times. 2017: Gave myself a $24k raise and accepted a job at Transfix. To this day, this was one my my favorite companies to work for. This was a hard company to leave, but I was early in my career making up for lost time in the tunnels. I also spit a verse over a dope beat as my farewell email and sent it to the whole company. 2018: Gave myself a $48k raise - welcome to Bloomberg! At this point I thought I plateaued. I was now making more than 2.5x what I was at Transit. Talk about a life change! God is good. I had no plans of leaving until drastic internal changes happened. 2019-2021: Took a 3k base pay cut but... joined Meta and give myself a significant overall raise due to those sweet, sweet RSUs. God, is this real?! Some of the best working experiences I've ever had. What a ride. 2021-2023: Base pay bump of 30k - now I'm at Coinbase. And still, those sweet, sweet RSUs. Liquid cash is always the best! This would be the company that made me realize I had the "golden handcuffs" on. It's SO hard to walk away from RSUs, but my family would ultimately help me realize there's more to life than money. 2023 - present: 30k base pay bump as I joined the good ship Docker, Inc. Pretty much at the top level (financially) of being a senior engineer but the golden handcuffs are finally off.
