Self-citations exaggerate Chinese research prowess, scholars charge. In this week's Latitudes, a new paper suggests that China’s research preeminence is inflated by a disproptionate tendency among Chinese academics of citing one another’s work. That was not the case. While there were those who bemoaned these ‘brave new worlders’, others were more sympathetic and put forward bold ideas of the future. Alongside support for European political integration and a revived League of Nations, some even supported the most utopian idea of the era: world government."

One or two things I’ve learned from following the U.S. election campaign period. The U.S. elections, from the campaign period and debates through to Election Day, are well-organized and widely publicized. Both the Democratic and Republican parties raise millions of dollars to conduct their campaigns transparently, without resorting to misusing public funds, which is a problem in African re-election campaigns. It’s an aspect I’ve always wished African nations would emulate. Many prominent African opposition figures including #Ousainou Darboe were invited to the #Democratic National Convention (DNC), and we hope they gained valuable insights that they can apply in future presidential campaigns. In The Gambia, we’ve seen the #Commission On Political Debates making efforts to enhance the quality of presidential debates. However, it’s concerning that some candidates have declined invitations to participate including #President Adama Barrow missing the opportunity to present their policies and manifestos directly to voters. We can and must do better.

AVOID THE WINK WINKS Dan Rather, whose seen and done just about everything in his role as a conduit of news and information, is what insiders call an American journalist whose decades of quality work have stood the test of time. Why? Because his even-handed reporting -- from war zones to political chaos -- embody the highest standards of ethics and quality journalism. In contrast, ex-president Donald Trump, now running again for his old job, constantly rants and raves against the "mainstream media" as biased against him and goes on the warpath anytime he feels slighted. Trump also tends to admire international dictators, including Russia's Vlad Putin. And Putin's government operates a propaganda machine believed to have infected key policy positions for a growing number of American politicians and hometown voters. But responsible journalists, like Rather, aren't anyone's lapdogs or mouthpieces. They consider their role as a search for truth, accuracy, fairness and decency. Last thought: Next time you check facts or opinions compare and examine more than one media source. If nothing else, look for credibility that doesn't include crazy-high drama and wink-wink "reporters" pretending to be professionals.
