Should Lattice Semiconductor buy Altera? With no product portfolio overlap, both companies can strengthen each other. Intel needs a cash injection, selling Altera would be a great way to do that quickly. For Lattice, this would leap frog them into the next tier. Combined revenue would be ~$2.2B, still smaller than AMD's Xilinx hence SEC should not have an issue with it. Before anyone says a smaller company buying a larger one, remember Avago's acquisition of Broadcom? This marriage would be great for the employees, customers, industry, and both companies.

According to TrendForce, DRAM industry revenue increased significantly to US$22.9 billion in the second quarter of 2024, a month-on-month increase of 24.8%. This surge was mainly due to the expansion of mainstream product shipments, which drove revenue growth for most manufacturers. Contract prices in the second quarter continued to rise, and due to geopolitical factors, the increase in traditional DRAM contract prices in the third quarter is expected to exceed previous forecasts. Major manufacturers Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron all saw an increase in shipments in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter. Average selling prices also continued the upward trend in the first quarter. Driving factors included the earthquake in Taiwan in early April and high demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) products, which prompted DRAM buyers to adopt a more aggressive purchasing strategy. Micron Technology unveils QLC NAND #SSD with more than 200 layers 💡 #Micron has launched a 2500 QLC NAND internal fit client product that’s faster than its 2550 TLC predecessor, despite TLC #NAND typically being quicker than QLC NAND. TLC (triple level cell) NAND has 3 bits per cell while QLC (quad level cell) has 4 bits per cell, meaning the #SSD's controller has to negotiate QLC’s 16 voltage states per cell instead of 8 with TLC. It takes longer to read and write individual cells unless the controller #firmware gets clever with such things as a very fast SLC (1 bit/cell) cache, and parallel #data plane access. Micron’s 2500 is claimed to be the first 200-plus layer QLC drive for OEM #desktop and #notebook (client) #computers. It uses 232-layer QLC NAND, and this gives it 30 percent more density, Micron says, than its 2400 176-layer QLC product, and 31 percent more than its 232-layer TLC NAND, as used in the 2550 M.2 format SSD. This was launched in December 2022 so it has taken 16 months to add the extra bit to the 232-layer NAND cells used in the 2500. #Samsung Starts Mass Production of 9th Generation V-NAND: 1Tb 3D TLC NAND 💡 Samsung Electronics has started mass production of its 9th generation of V-NAND #memory. The first dies based on their latest #NAND #tech come in a 1 Tb capacity using a triple-level cell (TLC) architecture, with #data transfer rates as high as 3.2 GT/s. The new 3D TLC NAND memory will initially be used to build high-capacity and high-performance #SSDs, which will help to solidify Samsung's position in the storage market. Diving right in, Samsung is conspicuously avoiding to list the number of layers in their latest generation NAND, which is the principle driving factor in increasing capacity generation-on-generation. The company's current 8th gen V-NAND is 236 layers – similar to its major competitors – and word on the street is that 9th gen V-NAND ups that to 290 layers, though this remains to be confirmed. Winbond secures NOR flash orders from Apple for 3Q24, say sources #Winbond Electronics has grabbed 45nm NOR flash orders from Apple, with shipments kicking off in the third quarter, according to industry sources. The orders may help the #Taiwan-based company capture a larger market share from its Chinese counterpart, GigaDevice Semiconductor Inc.. The recent surge in China's domestic NOR flash manufacturing capacity has resulted in a decline in #memory prices during the latter part of this year, suffering a modest decrease of around 5% compared to the first half, sources said. The prices of NOR flash should have stabilized from their low point in the first half of 2024, sources indicated. However, the market prices have been impacted due to the conversion of a portion of Chinese foundries' fab capabilities to NOR flash, since the demand for logic ICs with mature processes has declined. Consequently, this adjustment has led to a rise in the total inventory of NOR flash. On the demand side, a slower-than-usual peak season in the third quarter, combined with a recession in China's domestic consumer markets, has contributed to the market's oversupply, according to sources. Despite the current total NOR production capacity being slightly greater than demand, prices are unlikely to fall dramatically. SK hynix reports record Q1 with soaring demand for #HBM #chips #SKhynix saw first 2024 quarter revenues soar 144 percent as demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips rocketed. The #DRAM and #NAND manufacturer reported ₩12.43 trillion ($9.03 billion) in revenues with a ₩1.92 trillion ($1.4 billion) profit compared to last year’s ₩2.6 trillion ($1.9 billion) loss. This was a record first quarter revenue amount. DRAM accounted for 61 percent of its revenue and NAND 35 percent, with the remainder coming from other activities. Congratulations to Flex Logix on this outcome. They helped bring much needed awareness to the capabilities and benefits of #eFPGA technology (I will have the yellow tradeshow booths permanently etched in my brain) . On a related note, this moment reminds me of the risk/reward tradeoffs associated with adopting start-up technology. Many years ago, we licensed sensor fusion software from a startup company. Shortly after going to market with that software embedded into one of our FPGAs, the startup company was purchased by a public company - and made a captive technology. That created a whole series of challenges for us - first and foremost was to make or buy an alternative so we could continue shipping. We decided to make, but in retrospect, buying (licensing) would have been much lower risk and lower overall cost. STMicroelectronics Maintains Top Spot with 32.6% Market, onsemi Rises to Second Place in 2023 Revenue Ranking for #SiC Power Devices, Says TrendForce Corporation 💡 TrendForce 集邦科技 reports that the SiC power devices industry maintained strong growth in 2023, driven by the application of #BEVs. The top five suppliers accounted for approximately 91.9% of total revenue; ST lead the pack with a 32.6% market share while onsemi rose from fourth place in 2022 to second place. TrendForce’s analysis indicates that demand from #AI #servers and other fields will significantly increase in 2024. However, the noticeable slowdown in the sales growth of BEVs and weakening #industrial demand are affecting the SiC #supplychain.
