𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨 This past Monday, I had the incredible opportunity to demo and pitch Jammy to over 100 investors at NY #TechWeek AI Demo Day. Two weeks ago, thanks to Cindy Berman, I found out about the event and hesitated to sign up, doubting our product’s readiness. However, I saw it as a chance to push our limits. After a screening with Shriya Nevatia we were one of eight companies chosen, and I had to figure out how to demo our work-in-progress app and deliver an eight-minute pitch. I prepared thoroughly and felt confident. On the day, Dorothy Chang informed me I’d be the first presenter, which made me both nervous and excited. The pitch went well until the live demo. When showcasing Jammy’s ability to recommend post-session music, the integration failed despite my preparation. I still finished the presentation, landing the vision for Jammy and with congratulations and consolation from my peers: “live demos always break,” they said. It helped. Though I didn’t win the $50K prize, I secured a check from an angel investor, generated interest from several others, and met amazing founders in AI. The winning pitch went to the highly deserving CAPSULE, who is set to revolutionize contextual visual shopping search (like Shazam for shopping). Very cool. This experience highlighted the value of taking risks and the importance of failing forward. It also reminded me of the supportive NY Tech and entrepreneurial community. The journey can be lonely, and many dismiss community events and networking as distractions from the "real work." While that might sometimes be true, Monday night was a reminder that we’re not alone in this journey. We all want to see each other succeed in building the - extremely AI-infused - future we envision. On to the next challenge! Meta continues to be late to their own party. And Roblox seems to be doubling down in 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 experiences.  Roblox recently teamed up with Warner Bros. Entertainment and Fandango to sell tickets to the upcoming ‘Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice’ movie premiere. Considering the fact that over 60% of Roblox users are under 16 years of age, this is a smart move for all parties involved. If this model works, we may see other proto-metaverses like Minecraft and Fortnite bridge gaming payments with physical-world perks. The discussion touched on the lack of VC participation in AdTech (despite being a $1 Trillion addressable market). “Generalist VCs avoided AdTech because it’s complex. They often don’t understand why they’d win or lose”. This summed up exactly why FirstPartyCapital exists. A $1T+ complex sector needs specialists to fund innovation, provide deeper DD, illuminating context, access to networks and relevant portfolio support. Whenever I try and explain the crypto/web3 industry to friends who don’t get it (and frankly don’t want to due to the still kinda ugly brand perception of the industry) I often describe it as a microcosm of what is going to happen in all industries. Consumers will be ultra nuanced, tribal, segmented, speculative and expect incentives either in the form of cultural affirmation or financial rewards. The decade plus long obsession with performance and growth marketing has diluted some of the greatest brands as they farmed out their audience acquisition to big tech in order to pump up internal metrics and now have no idea who their audience even is. Crypto is an attention game and on a macro marketing level we are beginning to see the move to back quality brand marketing, obsessing over your audience and delivering them meaningful products and experiences. The key to winning will be hyper serving large niche groups that ultimately influence the mainstream.

AdAttributionKit: Unpacking Apple’s new ad attribution framework AAK unifies Apple’s various advertising attribution frameworks under a single umbrella product name and extends SKAdNetwork in meaningful ways, including with support for re-engagement and alternative app marketplaces. These are substantive improvements. But impediments to adoption remain: IP-based attribution is still widely viewed as a suitable alternative to Apple’s native iOS attribution framework, meaning that platform tools like Conversion APIs will take adoption priority.

We have a better idea on how much revenue Dotdash Meredith is generating from its OpenAI deal. Yesterday, IAC reported its Q2 financials and we dug in on how things are going for DDM. Digital revenue is up, print revenue is down (but less than previous quarters), and across the board, it's profitable. But during the earnings call, the team talked about how much of the licensing revenue can be attributed to the OpenAI deal. After working with 100+ brands to drive editorial coverage for their existing content, by far one of the most effective strategies is to leverage your first party data to tell unique stories. 3 shining examples to steal from: - Lyft (anonymized rider data to show everything from where people are going late night, to comparing cities by how much they tip) - Payscale (leveraging both their own data for things like their gender pay gap data, as well as surveys for things like how orgs are thinking about annual salary budgeting) - Intuit QuickBooks - combining both external/government data + their own proprietary data to create small business indices In comments: our very own Emma R.'s take on how to create newsworthy features from public data.
