Several factors have contributed to the decreased demand for cars. The State Bank of Pakistan's (SBP) tightened monetary policy has made car loans more expensive. Additionally, car prices have surged over the past two years, making purchases less affordable. Inflation and higher taxes have further diminished customers' purchasing power. SBP's stringent regulatory controls on car financing have also played a role, keeping imports in check. This was compounded by a shortage of parts due to the LC crisis, leading to non-production days in automobile factories, which suppressed supply even when demand existed. Throughout FY23, as supply was restored, demand continued to decline.

[Compton's Take] Everywhere I look, it seems the sky is falling for automotive dealers. The statistic being spread is that profits have dropped 34% on average. I have a different outlook for dealers... First, that number is an AVERAGE. (We're talking about average? Average? Average?) Second, who wants to be average? World Class Operators are in the top 20% of our industry. Because the number of below-average dealers is so numerous it skews the average. There’s a different mindset between average and world-class: - Average competes; world-class innovates. - Average avoids risk; world-class takes calculated risks. - Average makes excuses; world-class makes it happen. - Average has a scarcity mindset while world-class embraces abundance. - Average is frustrated; world-class is grateful. - Average is problem-oriented; world-class is solution-oriented. Direct To Consumer DTC seems to be a point of discussion since the announcement of VW Scout announcing their intention to adopt DTC. I seem to remember that during Covid, GM, Ford, Stellantis and other OEMs considering this. I remember OEMs telling us they were going to start limiting dealer inventories. And going primarily to a system where they would fill orders as customers placed them for a vehicle. Covid is over. Dealers for the most part (the exception is Toyota dealers) have a surplus of inventory. And none of the legacy OEMs are discussing going DTC anymore. And didn’t Fisker just announce a plan to sell through dealers? Is the VW Scout plan going to get traction? If they go this route can they maintain it? Are they just trying to get Tesla like profits? Can anyone do that?

This sounds good Genesis/Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차).....BUT DO NOT over-dealer your markets. Look at what it has done to specific luxury brands (along with their questionable product/sales experience) Cadillac, Lincoln Motor Company, JLR, and we believe to a lesser extent BMW of North America, LLC and Mercedes-Benz AG in certain markets. Lexus showed restraint but maybe a few too many stores in specific markets as well. Over-dealering can be deadly in terms of dealership profitability and ultimately, the brand it represents, and can be difficult/impossible to reverse. PS... Since merging the most disjointed framework and out-of-sync executives (corporate) with the least effective business model (auto dealerships) inevitably leads to insufficiently staffed teams because exploited employees depart despite earning the company substantial profits, when they realize they are only getting the few crumbs left over. Publicly traded companies care about ONE thing… their stock price. That’s it. Large corporations do not belong in the auto industry, because issues can’t be addressed adequately via zoom or a spreadsheet, or by measuring worthless KPIs. The biggest issue with corporations is the VPs, market managers and area/regional managers that do not implement consistent policies and practices as outlined by corporate. These “middle men” are the problem and they convince corporate everything is great. Executives don’t interact with the people doing the real work, IN the dealership. Dealerships only work because the owner/decision maker is involved in the daily operations. I said what I said.
