Something I’ve been thinking a lot about during the last 6 1/2 weeks of owning a bookstore is this: why do we need independent bookstores? What’s the point? I recently saw a question in a writer's group about what to include in a book signing at a local bookstore. Here are a few tips authors may find useful: 1. Bring signage that stands out, such as a banner, or a floor sign as well as a table cloth that matches your book cover's colours. 2. Don't forget to bring promotional materials like business cards, flyers, postcards or book marks with your author website and social media links printed on them. 3. Include room for a box that holds ballots for a contest. Invite attendees to sign up for your newsletter by filling out ballots to win a copy of your book. 4. Don't forget to bring lots of copies of your book! 5. Be sure you test out your pens so they don't smudge your book when you sign them. 6. Treat writing and publishing your book like learning to swim. Diving into the deep end without knowing how to swim, the depth of the pool, or the way to tread water, is a recipe for disaster. I don’t want that to be your first writing and publishing experience. I want to see you wading in the shallow end, getting your feet wet and getting used to the parameters–the water’s temp, the depth and the size of the pool, and the feeling of those floaties pinching the insides of your arms. In other words, before you go jumping in without any thought, slow down enough to get a little understanding of the publishing landscape, what goes into writing a book, the associated costs, and your long-term strategy. There’s a lot that goes into writing and publishing a book apart from the writing part, just like there’s a lot more to swimming than just being in the water moving your arms. My advice: Don’t jump into the deep end. You don’t know what you don’t know. Don’t go blindly into writing and publishing a book, thinking you can just cannonball in and all will be well. Don’t swim alone or in the dark. We need a guiding light to show us the strokes that will get us from one end of the pool to the other. Find yours. Be it a book coach, a consultant, or a friend who has done the book thing before you; get yourself a lifeguard. If you’re shopping around, I’d love to have a conversation. The best writing advice I have to repeat to myself every day... Show your audience what you mean, don't just tell them! (Ugh, but why is it so much easier to just TELL you?) Telling is...boring. Wait, wait, no. Telling is a...yawn fest. Showing you something takes... Curiosity Relatability Observation Introspection Showing you requires me to imagine what something... Looks like Smells like Tastes like Sounds like Feels like It requires more of me, but it turns out it's far more fulfilling. To practice, I try to write a poem every day using the guesses from my Wordle game. (Nerd alert 🤓 ) The other day, the word was Swish. it sounds like snow pants interrupting my soft winter's day it tastes like mouthwash dancing like jazz throughout my decay it looks like a jump shot welcoming whispers of luck for my play it smells like grape barrels noting my buds with a cherry's foreplay it feels like a swish... I think that checks out so I'll simplify mood with this swoosh on my route (PS, not my best poem 😅 But for more nonsense poems, go to wordle.poem on instagram) *** Next time your writing feels like a yawn fest, try this simple exercise of asking yourself... What does this idea feel like? What does this idea look like? What does this idea taste like? What does this idea smell like? What does this idea sound like? What picture can I paint for someone? What memory or story can I connect this idea to? SHOW your audience what you mean, don't just tell them 💛

Yesterday, I arrived at my flute lesson (10 minutes late and a bit stressed because of it) and as I got out my instrument and book, my instructor casually said, "I was reading a few of your blogs and things." I had no idea how to react. My blog posts are meant to speak to potential strategic consulting clients. They are mostly about audience research, SEO, content analysis, competitor research—not anything I'd imagine a flute teacher to be much interested in. Then she said, "I need to do some of that." In my stressed state of mind, it didn't really click, but I think she might have been asking about content services? I have no idea whether I should bring it up at the next lesson or not. But it's got me thinking about how many business relationships form "in the wild" so to speak. Have you met a client or employer or other important-to-your-work person in an unusual setting?

I've been a book coach, editor, and author for over 20 years. And I see the same types of problems over and over again in novels. See if any of these are in your writing and weed them out. 👉 Where to Begin? One of the most frequent errors I see is that writers don’t know where to start their story. That also applies to scenes. Beginnings of books and scenes often flounder in their beginning, giving us too much info about how we got here. Readers don’t need a lot of set up. Regardless if you’re a plotter or a seat-of-your-pants writer, you need to know what you want to accomplish in each scene. Scenes can take place close together or farther apart in time, but they should only contain actions that move your story forward. If you’re writing a romance and the hero and heroine haven’t spoken in two weeks, you don’t need to spend a lot of time in your next scene explaining what they’ve been doing or why (unless it directly relates to the plot or subplot). You can easily say something like, “After not hearing from John for two weeks Jane was surprised to see his number pop up on her phone.” You could change “surprised” to something that might more closely convey her feelings, like annoyed, irritated, elated, angry, miffed. But we don’t need a long explanation, just jump into the action. When in doubt, start with the action and add any explanation or transition later if you really need to. IS THERE A better time to start introducing color into my posters, coasters, signs, and sundry oddities than the cozy season of Fall? I think not! (Ah, you noticed I added signs to the catalog. 'Tis true, I'm looking into that type of oddity with great interest.)
