What are the best ways to make a great first impression in a Strategic Communications job interview?
Successful communications pros are good storytellers. Give the interviewer a sense of how effective you will be telling their organization's story by wowing them with yours. Have a mental Rolodex of short stories for every occasion -- true stories that illustrate your successes, values, and strategic knowhow. Remember the elements of a good story: setting, protagonist (you!), conflict or dilemma, climax and resolution. Use concrete images. Close by highlighting the insight you gained and connecting it clearly to how it will help you succeed in the role. Practice telling your stories to a trusted friend or relative -- or the mirror.

What do you do if your public speaking skills can help drive social change and advocacy?
Used to be that most public speaking took place, well, in public — at conferences, community events and other in-person forums. Because people now live, learn and form opinions in digital space, it’s more common to address audiences through device screens. This can help you access a bigger audience, but creates barriers to connecting with them. On a livestream or Zoom, you compete with other apps and tabs for attention. It’s harder to read the room, and you can’t rely on non-verbal communication. Give people a reason not to change the channel. Use platform tools to engage them in real-time. Use tone, powerful storytelling and visuals to grab them. Use calls-to-action to direct them to more information or engagement opportunities.

You have a strategic communications interview coming up. How can you prepare for it?
It's important to talk about your past -- the skills and experiences that qualify you to do the job. But don't neglect to talk about your future working for the organization, especially in later-stage interviews. Without acting presumptuous, act as if you already have the job and are now counseling your interviewer. Hook them by demonstrating your strategic thinking, creativity and the value you will provide. Use your deep research of the organization and your imagination to deduce your interviewer's most pressing problems. How will you use strategic communications to help solve them? Don't be afraid to give away your best ideas for free.

What are the most innovative ways to use press releases to reach a niche audience?
Time was, a press release was the best tool for securing some volume of positive news coverage. The diffusion and digitalization of media has changed all of that. In certain spaces, the press release now serves a different, but still-valuable, function: It can be a direct and targeted communication to high-value stakeholders who view releases as familiar and trusted sources of timely information. It can serve as “anchor” content from which you can spin off smaller pieces. Or it can give you and others something to link to, so your audience is able to get the full story all in one place.
