I chose Alaska for this particular challenge because I definitely have a map out there with Alaska sporting a very wonky projection (lesson learned). As storms like Hurricane Helene become more frequent and volatile, traditional weather sources alone aren't enough. The attached animation shows real-time precipitation data from the MRMS network (left) with Tomorrow.io’s Unified Precipitation (UP) product (right) during Hurricane Helene. Notably, UP captures the storm's full extent and lifecycle, including areas beyond radar range. How? Important research- but this article fails to emphasize the critical driver of atoll resilience- coral reef health. I found similar evidence comparing shoreline loss in the Marshall Islands from 1950s aerial photos to 2004 satellite imagery. The main areas of erosion coincided with urban development, lower coral reef health and very low benthic formanifera production - otherwise atolls were remarkably stable given highly productive barrier reefs. For so many reasons resilient coral reef ecosystems are vital to the future of our planet and 100s of millions of people worldwide.

This article from Coastal Review in North Carolina reinforces that these deaths are widespread (ie. not concentrated around offshore wind activities), common, caused by a variety of factors and have been happening for decades. El Nino is officially over. This atmospheric condition is associated with wind shear that would tend to disrupt the formation of tropical storms. For now, we are in what is called a neutral phase of the El Nino/La Nina cycle, but as the experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) share, La Nina is expected to be in effect by the peak of the hurricane season. In the New Face of Flooding, the Washington Post takes a deep dive into the complexities of modeling coastal Alabama flooding, particularly with interactions of high precipitation, tides, and sea-level rise. Key findings ⏹ The ocean off the U.S. Gulf and Southern Atlantic coasts has, since 2010, risen at about triple the rate experienced during the previous 30 years. In just the Gulf of Mexico, sea levels rose at twice the global rate over the past 14 years. ⏹ There are now more dangerous rain-driven and flash floods reported within 10 miles of the coast in the region. Their numbers increased by 42 percent from 2007 to 2022 — a total of 2,800 events, according to a Post analysis of National Weather Service data. ⏹ The Fowl River flood was caused by intense but not record-breaking thunderstorms that collided with high tides, according to Webb’s analysis. Working together, they caused the river to spill miles inland. Come on Wyoming ! You definitely can do better than this !?!?!? In response to the infamous coyote murder by snowmobile in Wyoming the states tourism industry was trying to get the state to publicly admit poor wildlife protections and do something about it. They could not get traction. What has gotten some traction is the male-bovine excrement statement below from a predator regulatory committee. (The full story is on WyoFiles and I will probably pull the site up tomorrow to add to this. ) But I cannot believe the state has such a wrongly based predator hate factor that they would even suggest this wording for addressing a real problem. “Any person who intentionally directly injures or disables a predatory animal by use of a vehicle, snowmobile or other ground-based mobile device shall immediately make a good faith effort to euthanize the injured or disabled predatory animal.” SHALL IMMEDIATELY MAKE A GOOD FAITH EFFORT to euthanize ( by stomping, clubbing or running over again) the predatory animal they just intentionally and inhumanely ran down and ran over! Population models are used in conservation science to predict population variations and try to understand what is driving population changes. The Fonseca Species Conservation Fund (FSCF) is providing grants of up to $25,000 to either start or progress the career of conservationists 35 years of age and younger from Global Environment Facility (GEF)-recipient countries (https://lnkd.in/gNurHdev). FSCF grants will support conservation efforts for five threatened species groups — amphibians, freshwater fish, primates, small mammals, tortoises and freshwater turtles — in urgent need of intervention and conservation action.
