📍 2024 Drake Star Global Gaming Report ➡ Q1 2024 Summary 2024 has started on a strong note with multiple high value deals and the momentum extended in early Q2 with Embracer continuing to divest major businesses. Existing and new VCs continue to raise more capital focused on gaming investments (A16Z’s Gaming Fund II: $600M and BITKRAFT III: $275M) and public markets have improved since bottoming out in October last year • With 47 announced deals and disclosed deal value of $2.4B, M&A activity continues to pick-up and was higher than any quarter last year. CVC/Haveli acquired Jagex ($1.1B) and Take-Two picked up Gearbox from Embracer ($460M). Volume in the mid to small size deals segment with mostly undisclosed deal value increased significantly • Private financings reported a notable uptick in Q1 with over $2.4B raised through 188 deals, reversing a downward trend in deal volume since mid 2022. Disney invested $1.5B in Epic Games, Build a Rocket Boy raised $110M and True Gamers raised $45M • Early-stage financings continue to be the major portion of total deals while the mid to late-stage deal activity remained low. With the recent upswing in the blockchain market, early-stage blockchain deals were 40% of the total deal volume. For investments over the last 12 months, BITKRAFT led the VC league table, followed by Andreessen Horowitz, Griffin Gaming, Play Ventures and Vgames ➡ 2024 Outlook With a strong start of the year, we expect M&A activity to steadily increase in 2024. Savvy/Scopely, Tencent, Take-Two and Playtika are expected to be some of the active buyers. As we predicted last year, PE firms’ interest in the gaming sector has increased (i.e., Jagex/CVC deal) and given the attractive public company valuations, we except several acquisitions and take-private deals to be led by PE firms in the coming quarters • With funding trends finally breaching the downward trend and growing for Q1, we expect overall growth in private financings during the year. While early-stage companies will continue to dominate the deal volume, we expect a modest increase in mid / late-stage deals. AI, mixed reality, platform and tools continue to be hot segments   • We saw the first successful consumer tech IPO in Reddit this quarter and we anticipate that several IPO ready gaming companies such as Discord and EPIC are starting to plan for a listing in the second half of 2024 or 2025

This was reported by Daniel Wu, one of the founders of Hero Games, the largest shareholder of the game's developers. According to him, the game's development cost $70 million and took 6 years. ◾️Street Fighter 6 sales reached 4 million copies across all platforms. The total sales of the series as of the end of the first half of 2024 stand at 55 million. ◾️Sales of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 are approaching 3 million copies, earning more than all other Warhammer universe games combined in 2023. ◾️Harrison Froschke, Senior Product Manager at Blizzard Entertainment, revealed on his LinkedIn the revenue of Diablo IV. The game has surpassed $1 billion in earnings, with $150 million coming from microtransactions. Blizzard had officially reported that the game earned $666 million in its first 5 days of sales. ◾️More than 1 million people have played Citizen Sleeper. The previous billion was achieved in January this year, and the game has surpassed 300 million downloads. ◾️Sensor Tower reports that The Last War: Survival has earned over $900 million since its release. 30.4% of that amount came from the US, 22.9% from South Korea, and 12.4% from Japan. The RPD (revenue per download) in South Korea is $53, the highest among all countries. Additionally, The Last War: Survival accounts for 30% of the revenue from strategy games in South Korea. ◾️In its first year, Monster Hunter Now has earned over $225 million, according to data from AppMagic. ◾️Trivia Crack by Etermax has been downloaded more than 800 million times. It took 11 years to reach this milestone. ◾️Using AppMagic, mobilegamer.biz found that games from Netflix Games have been downloaded more than 210 million times. Take-Two Interactive has released its financial report for the first quarter ended June 30, 2024. The company posted modest revenue growth, but its net loss widened during the period. 💰 Financial highlights: 📈 According to its earnings presentation, Take-Two reached $1.33 billion in revenue in the first quarter, up 4% year-over-year. 📈 Net bookings grew 1% year-over-year to $1.22 billion. Sumo Digital announced a 15% cut in its workforce, roughly impacting 250 individuals. Among these 250 individuals was the team of Timbre Games, which also confirmed that the studio was being shut down. Timbre Games was founded in 2021 and made a part of Pipework Studios. Although Timbre had yet to launch any games, its website indicates that it was in the middle of two game projects. Unfortunately, game developers face more loss than the parent company when something like this happens. Who knows how Timbre's team might be coping after putting in millions of efforts to build the games and losing everything in a single blink? Nadia Lohan — With over a decade's worth of experience in Production, before Timbre, Nadia was a Producer at Blackbird Interactive and worked on Minecraft Legends. Notably, she has experience in the VFX industry and coordinated for blockbusters like Mulan, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Maleficent. Vivek Ramkumar — Here's a talented Game Designer who has worked on titles like Sleeping Dogs and Tryst, built his own first-person indie game, and has experience in LiveOps Design. Prior to Timbre, he was a senior Technical Designer for Relic Entertainment. Gerritt Turner — Before Timbre, Gerritt worked at Wizards of the Coast on a lot of Magic: The Gathering's writing, designing and overall creative. Voodoo's Cup Heroes already scaled to $60K a day 🤑 in IAP only and 100K downloads a day. The game has been constantly growing from its soft-launch in February making probably more than $3 Mil. in last 30 days altogether. This seems as another major Hybridcasual hit for Voodoo, as it already overtook Block Jam 3D and its on its way to catch up to Mob Control. Ironically it has the Mob Control math gates ➗ core built into it, which seems as an obvious choice to iterate upon. 2 months before its launch there was Bag Fight in Voodoo's portfolio, a game that iterated upon the Backpack hero successful Steam game. Cup Heroes took its top visualization and 2 phase core setup and replaced the inventory merging mechanic with the tried and tested Mob Control gates. But don't be fooled, the biggest and the most important iteration is actually the rogue lite skill randomizer. Here skills are picked at the end of each wave as there is no level in the game. You also need to pay the balls currency to get them, in contrast to the usual setup, where these are given for free, each time you level up. This offers a lot of places for ad placements, and I mean a lot 😅, with possibilities to refresh the skills, get a specific skill for and ad, get all 3 skills for an ad, revive, etc. On top of it you also have interstitials popping in your face. The core gameplay itself is also very interesting as the combat happens automatically on top of the screen with no player input. After you kill the enemies and they drop some balls you need to select where do you want to drop them, so that mathematically, they will multiply as much as possible, so you can then buy skills with them in the last 3rd step, then the core repeats. The mobile gaming landscape welcomes a new player: Juicy Button Games! Based in Limassol, Cyprus, this studio has already secured a promising $3 million in funding led by The Games Fund (TGF). Juicy Button boasts a powerhouse founding team. Alexander Kravchuk (creator of mobile strategy hit Total Battle), Anton Sinelnikov (design director of Pixel Gun 3D), and Aleksandr Zaytsev (co-founder of Mighty Party developer Panoramik) bring a combined track record of success. Their previous titles have reportedly garnered a staggering $180 million to $220 million in revenue and a massive player base with 43 million to 190 million downloads across their lifetimes. The studio isn't wasting any time setting its sights on a new challenge. Their debut project will be a 4X strategy game designed specifically for mobile platforms. This genre is currently dominated by Chinese developers, but Juicy Button aims to break the mold and become a "worthy European challenger." This sentiment aligns with TGF's vision. Ilya Karpinskiy, co-founder of the VC firm, sees immense potential in Europe's game development scene. NEW GAME TRENDING SUPERMARKET SIMULATOR (ROUND 2) In April, I published a post about the new trend of supermarket simulators 🛒 in the games industry. There I mentioned that this trend emerged on Steam (by Valve corporation) under the title "Supermarket Simulator", developed by Nokta Games. The trend quickly spread to the mobile market and spawned some hits, such as "Supermarket Manager Simulator" by Polish studio Digital Melody Games. 🇵🇱 At that time, the games that took advantage of this trend reached around 35MM downloads and US$512k in IAP revenue. What has happened since then? 🤔 Well… some gaming studios have read my post 🤣 and launched their versions of supermarket simulators. And studios that had already developed supermarket simulators, either in a different version to Nokta's game, also took advantage of the trend. 📈 (This is the case with "Hypermarket 3D", a Hypercasual simlutator published by Sunday and developed by Suji Games) The trend is still hot! 🔥 "Manage Supermarket Simulator" by Zego Studio has jumped to the top of the charts in recent weeks. 🔝 According to AppMagic, since March the supermarket trend has generated around 69MM downloads and US$1.1MM in IAP revenue in the mobile gaming market. The following points summarize the alleged findings from their investigation: Inflated User Metrics: Hindenburg’s report suggests Roblox may have significantly overstated key metrics: Platform user numbers appear inflated by 25%-42% or more. Engagement hours could be exaggerated by over 100%. Child Safety Concerns: In-game research by Hindenburg reveals a disturbing, unsafe environment, including: Exposure of children to explicit, violent, and abusive content. Rampant grooming, pornography, and predatory behavior on the platform. Roblox's former senior product designer stated, "Leadership doesn’t want to limit engagement even if it compromises safety." Social Media Risks: Hindenburg reports that Roblox’s social features lack robust screening, allowing predators to target large numbers of children. Games like “LGBTQ+ Vibes” (with over 40.6 million visits) are accessible to all ages, where users reportedly exchange explicit content and hateful language.
