We gathered dozens of operators from the MGMT Boston Operators Club and local founders alongside the 186 Ventures team this October to discuss the evolution of our dear software markets, the status of some predictions for 2024 (all looking good!), and what’s on deck for next year. General Partner Giuseppe Stuto led us through the following predictions for 2025 to share with you all.. ↕ We will see more vertical AI applications manifest themselves within the Enterprise in a similar ways that SaaS moved from horizontal to vertical use cases 🔔 We will see services business models more common and software budget purchasing models less common - SaaS may even be given away for cheap/free as a “way in” ⚖ Capital efficiency, on a relative basis, will almost be required to create enduring & compounding defensible enterprise value. Details like procurement cycle lengths and creativity with non-dilutive financing, like leveraging revenue based financing tools for example, will all matter 💡 Specific to AI, premiums will be placed on applications that can actually get “reasoning” right. All purpose LLMs still have a ways to go and there are multiple approaches with the “jury still out” on how to get context and reasoning right. Infrastructure solutions that use general purpose or customizable knowledge graphs to help application developers get to 100% (enterprise acceptable accuracy) will emerge OR savvy application developers will fill the gaps themselves. He got in a cab this week with a Muslim cab driver with a Palestinian flag. As I meet many new incredible founders launching startups, I'm constantly going back to this message from Eran Bielski GP Entrée Capital about mission-driven founders. Mission-driven founders are a different breed, it's what keeps them going when it's rough and want to give up. There's no real way to see if a founder is or isn't but usually, it's something from childhood, or a chip on the shoulder, that makes them have this mission and change the world. I really enjoyed breaking in our new studio to sit down with Temporal Technologies Co-Founders Samar Abbas and Maxim Fateev for the latest episode of Founded & Funded. Temporal was founded in 2019 based on an open-source microservices orchestration engine project but is the result of a more than decade-long partnership between the two co-founders that spanned their time working on different iterations of the same thing at AWS, Microsoft, and Uber. Here is an article your VC doesn’t want you to read, but it makes a lot of sense for us founders to know. All the content out there make smaller exits a “failure.” But this is all VC narrative that supports thier goals, not ours. Per this article, a small exit that gets you $30 million dollars and sets your family up for generations is a good outcome in my book :). Yesterday I had dinner with ~20 impressive founders ($100MM+ in enterprise value!). 😮 And most were surprised to know beforehand I was sweating bullets....😟 One of the best parts of living in NYC is getting the opportunity to meet amazing founders, building in spaces that may have no connection to yours. One started a viral AI girlfriend doing over $2MM in profit, someone sold two businesses to publicly traded companies, another created the worlds largest Minecraft server. My friend Andrew Yeung throws these incredible dinners for founders where there are REAL conversations and NO selling. (Refreshing I know) And over the years I've been to many networking type events. But what most don't realize is even though I may seem calm and collected on the outside, before these events, I'm usually very nervous. Until I DM'd Nick Gray who told me 4 things about how to tackle these events and feel more yourself. 1. Show up EARLY - open up your google maps, see the time it will take to reach, and double it. Thats when you should start. To kick the anxiety of meeting people starts with going there well before time. 2. Meet the organizers - they WANT everyone to have a good time! When you go early, ask them if you can help with anything, and get to know them as people. 3. Understand WHY are you anxious - for me, a lot of this has to do with how I want to be perceived. I didn't want to be the guy who was standing by himself, with his drink. And that's ok and totally normal to feel! But understanding WHY you are feeling anxious is important to find a way to overcome it. 4. It's totally fine to join in on a conversation - a simple "can I join you all?" is all it takes to now jump into the mix. *Bonus* 5. If this is how you are feeling, think about how YOU can make someone feel more comfortable! See someone standing by themselves? Go talk to them! Remember that it is no ones intention to make you feel excluded. But YOU need to make connecting with others a priority. Are you nervous before meeting new people? What tips help ease the anxiety?

Frugality has always been a core value for me, especially in the world of entrepreneurship. Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, once mentioned that the greatest founders are those who are careful with every dollar. It makes me think when I see startups investing in lavish offices, designer furniture, and extravagant perks. While comfort has its place, I often wonder: does it really help build something lasting? For many visionary founders, money isn't about personal luxury—it's fuel for their mission. They're willing to make sacrifices, sometimes even taking little to no salary, to invest more into what they're creating. It's not about depriving ourselves but about focusing on what's truly important. So here's a thought: Are we directing our resources toward what genuinely advances our vision? Can we choose a bit of frugality today to build something greater for tomorrow? Sometimes, putting purpose over perks can make all the difference.
