Last week at the Music Business Association's Nashville conference, I talked to industry leaders about AI's potential impact on the music business: TL;DR - the "AI" genie is out of the bottle. Platforms will emerge challenging existing copyright laws, majors will be forced to react. Big tech creating extra pressure on top of a well funded startup ecosystem. Tools are getting more powerful, and regulation needs to catch up. 1. Big tech is offering everyone $$$ for training rights ...But rightsholders worry it might be a one way door. Let someone train on your catalog, and that might be the last paycheck you see as trained models could dilute and devalue catalog revenues. 2. Ethics vs. Profit Music executives are feeling uneasy about the second "digitization" of music (the first being mp3s), using human created works as training material to generate AI-created ones with no artist involvement. But the money is real, and some are afraid of getting left behind. 3. Artist-Friendly Companies Double Down Founder of BandLab Technologies Meng Ru Kuok drew a clear line in the sand that BandLab values artist rights and respects music copyright. BandLab, like Tuney, believes traceability of source material is essential to ethical music AI. It isn't a surprise that companies who already have an engaged user base of musicians are assuring those customers they are in their corner. 4. An Axe Is Being Sharpened (maybe?) The industry is waiting to see if the major music companies and trade organizations will litigate against companies allegedly training on public data they did not acquire or license legally. But some are also aware that if unethical AI platforms get enough user or revenue traction, they could be in a position to fight or settle lawsuits, or even strike agreements with the majors. 5. Copyright Office Guidelines due This Fall You won't see much legal activity from the trade orgs and incumbents until after US Copyright Office issues its guidelines on AI and copyright. If training isn't deemed "fair use" (and I'm sure it won't), you will likely see a string of court cases against models trained on copyright protected music without licenses. 6. Not All Doom and Gloom There's tons of exciting innovation happening around creation, marketing, fraud prevention, music discovery and scalable tech infrastructure for the music business. Companies like SoundCloud Deezer and Tuned Global are using AI and ML in ethical ways to improve the consumer experience for streaming and social media. Also companies like Beatdapp AudioShake Chartmetric innovating in fraud detection, stem separation and analytics. Shout out to all the friends I saw last week, old and new. The Gauge report is out from Nielsen - probably the best snapshot of CTV and viewing trends by platform, and the growth of #Streaming. How does TLDR maintain industry-leading email open rates of 40%+? It’s not magic—just smart subject lines. Here’s our approach: 1️⃣ Keep it short: Email clients generally cut off subject lines at 55-60 characters. We aim for under 50 so they display well on mobile. 2️⃣ Maximize impact: Think of it as an exercise in compression. Pack as much value as you can into the fewest number of characters. 3️⃣ Avoid clickbait titles: They might get you one open, but they destroy trust for the emails to follow. The result? Interesting subject lines that get people genuinely excited to see what’s inside. tl;dr: Capturing your target audience’s interest and trust from the beginning is crucial—especially when they’re devs. Strike the balance with your email subject lines to start off on the right foot.

The crazy thing is many of us (and myself included) believed that streaming should have created a whole new value chain that released more for the sports industry as the avid fan was able to truly acquire what they wanted. Few of us (across sports/media/tech) really understood how much the implosion of the bundle would negatively impact the industry. The one element I have always stated is that after the great unbundling will be the great consolidation… it’s the history of business. So I expect more and more streaming and less old form broadcast (especially as new streaming tech enables better anti piracy in the future) BUT I expect more concepts like Venu or streaming bundles to appear to provide better value both for the customer and business. The trick as always is to have strong beliefs but to be open to new information to adapt and change your opinion and when you do… move. Life and business (and fandom) is never straight line.

Processing AP weekly gives us a clear snapshot of our agency’s impact on brand services, as our payments to creator partners directly reflect the quality and type of talent involved in our unique programs. Below are 3 deal insights on Node App's $13M sale to DULCEDO Management. This is critical info for any creator x media biz owner. 📈 GROWING INFLUENCER M&A There's been many influencer marketing M&A deals in last couple years, ranging from Publicis Groupe buying Influential to Stagwell buying Movers+Shakers. Through these deals, we've observed a premium for platforms that can bring together thousands of brands and thousands of creators, and do campaigns at scale. 🤝 DULCEDO'S 5TH ACQUISITION This is Dulcedo's 5th acquisition over past 6 to 7 years. They've acquired different talent representation, PR, and digital agencies like Sundae Creative Agency and Influence + All Management. There's been no press about Dulcedo having PE-backing, so they're likely doing these deals off their balance sheet and getting creative in deal structuring. 📊 ESTIMATED 31X EBITDA MULTIPLE I estimate run-rate revenue around $1.2M, and EBITDA around $420k. At $13M purchase price, that's a 31X EBITDA multiple. Assuming my math is directionally right, this is significantly higher than other deals like Influential, which I estimated was sold to Publicis for around 11x forward EBITDA. “We continue to see strong momentum in our podcast business” - Bob Pittman during the iHeartMedia earnings call this morning. Podcast revenue was $105m for Q2, up 8%, and overall revenue was $929m, up 1%, beating estimates. Unsurprisingly, radio revenue continues to decline while podcasting continues to be the highest growth opportunity for iHeart and other more traditional audio companies. Over the last two years, radio revenue has declined 4.3%, while podcasting revenue has grown 8.5%… and it’s not slowing down. The story here is pretty straightforward.
