When a leadership team is not deeply technical and lacks product/design chops, you're beholden to hire layers of people with the sole job of being the translation layer. This may be worth it—a business is built on many areas of domain experience, and tech/product/design is but part of that. But it does come with overhead, and you have to go into that situation with your eyes open.

In the TED Conferences "How giant websites design for you", Margaret Gould Stewart, Facebook's VP of Product Design discusses the design of digital experiences, especially design of system so massive that it's difficult to comprehend. An example like the Facebook "like" and "share" buttons, which are seen a staggering 22 billion times daily, making them some of the most-viewed design elements. Margaret shares her top 3 rules for designing at scale: 1) Attention to details, tiny changes can make huge impact 2) Be cognizant and understand how to design with data and 3) Introduce changes very carefully. Let's dive 🏊‍♂️ into the lesser-discussed sides of even and uneven number scales. **𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁** Pros: - Forces a decision, no fence-sitting allowed. 🚀 The Importance of Research in Discovery Phases In a recent episode of Pulse by Intuji, host Julian Wallis sat down with Cory Lebson, Principal of Lebsontech LLC and a UX research veteran with 30 years of experience. Together, they explored the critical role that user experience and customer research play in product development. Projects to often prioritise "shiny objects" that sound revolutionary to internal teams but fall flat with users. Despite having years of customer experience, executives sometimes overlook the essential step of validating assumptions with thorough research. Stakeholders often say things like "We've been working with our customers for 20 years, we know what they want." But when it comes down to it, Julian highlights, "the facts are the users don't want it, and we've just wasted an awful amount of budget building that." 🔑 The takeaway? Don’t skip the research phase! It takes a fairly privileged position to shed labels, shed titles, "just work it out", "do what it takes", and claim "we're all product developers." Yes, boundary spanning can be ideal, and a lot of very creative and innovative things happen when you get a good mix of disciplines. But also observe what happens when someone wakes up one morning and thinks to themselves, "You know, I can do that! I think! How hard can [insert discipline] actually be?" Or what happens when there are cuts, and someone steps back and thinks, "You know, I never really understood what [function] actually did. It sort of seems like they weren't really doing the work. How hard can it be for everyone to do it?" I used to be blissfully ignorant about this, but have come around a bit to the idea of encouraging functional skill-set identity and advocacy. I think it has something to do with the product management community's penchant for renaming and rebranding things under a broader umbrella in ways that suit them with a lot of damaging 2nd order effects.
