There's so much talk about using AI to generate content, especially now that tools like ChatGPT make it look so easy. But is that coming at a cost to the reader experience? I'm a huge fan of (properly using) AI. It's been great at summarizing meetings. I use it sometimes to generate headline ideas or to generate a first draft of social media copy. I'm legitimately amazed at how fast this technology is developing. But as someone who has been "generating content" for newspapers, websites, blogs and social media since MySpace was the dominant social platform, I see far too many companies rushing to adopt AI for content generation without question. It seems so easy — because it is. Upload some reputable, trustworthy data sources (at least, please tell me you're doing this), click a couple buttons and you've got a story ready to go! Unfortunately, going this route ignores a lot of success factors. - Is it going to rank on Google? (No — the algorithm wants human experience and expertise that AI can't magically generate.) - Is it something that will add value for your customers? (People don't really want to read awkward AI copy, and will just bounce.) - Is it going to read well? (Unless you're also a robot ... no.) Instead, use AI to *assist* human writers. It's great at summarizing interviews, gathering key data points and helping you brainstorm. It can generate a first draft that gives you a structure to work with, if you're stuck. AI is a wonderful tool as an assistant, but it's not a long-term content strategy. While the technology changes over time, one thing doesn't — people want to trust that the article they're reading will help them out. Seeing how often people add "Reddit" on the end of their Google searches just confirms this. If you really want to stand out among your competitors and get long-lasting results, don't use AI as a content generator. Use it to help your human writers and editors do their job better.

It's easy for journalists, PR people and marketers to all demonise eachother, but the reality of modern communication - especially B2B comms - is that we all need one another. Almost all news published today is sourced from a press release or proactive media relationship. Establishing respectful, mutually beneficial relationships can make all the difference - as a journalist it's such a load off your mind knowing you can get an impactful comment right when you need it. When you trust a comms professional, you're more likely to turn to them when you need expert commentary, and in turn to hear them out when they tell you about a potentially impactful story (especially relevant considering how many releases flood our inboxes). But these relationships take work - the tricky part is they might not pay off right away, but in the long term, they can pay dividends. My ad nerds and I remember this 2010 Super Bowl commercial for its sweet conscious-coupling story that unfolded in a search bar (we hadn't seen the likes of this creative tactic before). It came from Google and it was called "Parisian Love." Unicorn AI startup Perplexity decided to reimagine the spot, calling it "Parisian Dream" and aiming to make a point about its rival search. AI Rising "...This year’s survey found a huge jump in the percentage of employees who said their companies are using AI: 53%, compared to 23% in 2022. But like everyone else, publishing employees are uneasy about the new technology. Only 25% of survey respondents believe AI will have a positive impact on their jobs, while 40% believe it will have a negative impact. Respondents were even more concerned about how AI will affect the industry in general: only 13% said they believe AI will change publishing for the better, while 56% think the technology will make it worse..."

This is the time of year when pitches on predictions for the next year start to pour in. Here is my individual perspective on New Year predictions and what can make them a lot better. Moreover, what types of predictions do you want to hear about? What sectors? What trends? What matters to your organization's strategy for 2025 that you want some insight on? We've all heard about it -- the journalism industry is experiencing a seismic shift with the integration of AI technologies. I know -- I'm sick of hearing about it too. But it's undeniable -- AI will play a pivotal role in shaping how news is gathered, analyzed and disseminated, especially in this critical time of political and economic volatility. But not all of it's bad. Here's three ways: 1) Enhanced data analysis: AI algorithms can sift through massive data sets to identify trends and patterns faster than ever before. This capability is crucial for journalists covering complex issues like elections, economic shifts and conflicts. It enables more in-depth investigative reporting and data-driven journalism, providing richer, more nuanced stories. 2) Automated reporting: I know -- it sounds scary. But AI can actually automate the reporting of things like financial reports or sports summaries. This can allow journalists to focus on more complex pieces, which require a human element. 3) Fact-checking and misinformation: It's what everyone's worried about -- will AI spread misinformation? If used well, AI can engage in real-time fact-checking and cross-reference data from multiple sources. Sound off in the comments -- what are some ways AI is useful in your industry?
