While I've had the opportunity to use SQL sporadically throughout my career, completing Dr. Severance's Intro to SQL course from University of Michigan provided a valuable foundational understanding of the theory behind the language and its application to efficient database management. The hands-on assignments and thorough course materials have significantly boosted my confidence in handling more advanced SQL-dependent tasks and deliverables. Next stop - Python!

Sooo, I've been busy... First things first, I started a new job as an Associate Analyst within the NIS division of Vivint! Ever since I got the offer, I heard about 6 different job descriptions but now that I've been here for a week, I've think I've got it down: I'm 90% Data Analyst, 10% Data Engineer. Here's how I cam to that conclusion: 90% Data Analyst: 1. Building and Maintaining Tableau Dashboards. 2. Updating Initial SQL queries for the Tableau data sources. 3. Working directly with various stakeholders to perform root cause analyses, hypothesis testing, and various statistical tests to determine what is the best course of action for a given project. 10% Data Engineer: 1. Once I'm comfortable with business processes and workflows, I will dive deep into Snowflake by building and optimizing Tasks, complex CTEs, and integrating Semi-Structured data from various sources to create a sort of "Master Dataset" for analytical purposes. 2. Still pending review, I can see a use case for using Snowpark for more flexible data transformation and data quality checking using tools such as pytest or Great Expectations. Overall, I consider myself an Analytics Engineer since the description laid out above seems to fit the bill despite the fact I'm not using tools like dbt or Great Expectations (yet).

🎊𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 🎊 I finished up my 3rd course in Western Governors University’s Master of Science in Data Analytics - Data Engineering earlier this week: Analytics Programming. This course took significantly less time than the others so far because of my familiarity with Python (shout-out to WGU’s competency-based model!) 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 This course was an introduction to using programming for data analytics, so it focused on breaking down how to think algorithmically about data tasks as well as the basics of data preparation, manipulation, analysis, and visualization using Python and R. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 This course was the most fun so far (although I have a feeling I’m going to be saying that a lot going forward). I learned how to use Gitlab and got a blast from the past of my time with App Academy using git for version control (Wesley West, Jesse Byers that git assessment still haunts me). I also got to jump back into Python for my course projects and open up some Jupyter notebooks for data analysis and visualizations. I still love seaborn over matplotlib… tell me why I’m wrong in the comments 😉 It’s almost comforting going back to something you’ve learned previously and recognizing that you understand more of it now than you did before. I recently saw a post (I can’t find it now, but I promise you it existed) about making time to read every single day. One of the first pieces of advice was to do a first read-through without worrying about things you don’t understand, and diving deeper during another read. If you are someone like me who figured out that data existed years after your career started, you probably have jumped around in a lot of different courses and learned about a lot of different things, but had a difficult time putting it all together. It may seem silly, but I’m actually glad I did that - it made it so that when I came back to this material, I was already familiar enough with it that I could finally understand it at a deeper level. I highly recommend applying that reading method for anything that you’re trying to learn - get through it first, then do another round where you ask questions and dig deeper. 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 I’ve started on the next course, Data Preparation and Exploration, which is a much more in-depth look at preparing data for analysis and modeling, and I can already tell I’m going to learn a lot. 3️⃣ years ago this month I finished my last project for grad school and started my first analyst role! To say my expectations vs. reality were drastically different is an understatement. These past couple of years have looked like I imagined. But even then I've learned more than I could of expected! 1st year- I had 4 different managers. My adaptability skills were put to work! 2nd year - dealt with a layoff & got a promotion in the process. 3rd year - learning, growing and finally feeling more confident in my skillset. My first year expectations were applying the technical skills I learned on the job. The reality was different- here are some of the lessons I learned: 🪄 Before jumping into the data, it's important to understanding the business needs and building relationships. 🪄 Just because your path doesn't feel linear does not mean you aren't learning. Since I went through so many changes I was looking at business problems from different perspectives. 🪄 The skills I wasn't taught but always had- curiosity, persistence, resourcefulness have been just as important in my day to day as an analyst.✨✨

Last week Friday, UWL hosted it's final campus closeup of the fall 2024 semester. This is not only a great chance for students to learn and interact with all the resources across our campus/community, but an opportunity for Rec Sports to engage with incoming Eagles. I, despite being a proud UWL senior eager to graduate in spring, never actually toured UWL. Although, I wonder how much easier the decision would have been if I did. Speaking with students is such a great opportunity to learn more about their interests and reasons for "donning the maroon". That being said, it's quite different than trade show sales experiences I've had in the past. Instead of trying desperately to hook passers by with catchy phrases or quick product pitches, students are actually excited to talk to Rec Sports. For this reason, the marketing department has to do it's best to stay up to temp on all the Rec Sports department happenings, which can prove quite difficult. Still though, this gives us a fantastic chance for some exploratory research. Learning how to tweak our programming, promotions, or events to better serve our student body in pursuit of active lives is an opportunity I bet more organizations wish they had! We get direct feedback from students and it goes a long way in our decisions. As this semester begins to wrap up at lightning speed, it's opportunities like this I wish every workplace had. Chances to interact directly with constituents who are not merely curious, but ecstatic to learn more about what you do, and the chance to share just that.

Just finished Week 2 of my internship as a Data Analyst at Koch Engineered Solutions (KES). I've already learned so much about the industry and business dynamics, and it's been an incredible experience. Here are a few key learnings from just 8 days at Koch. - Self-actualization occurs when you use your innate abilities to perform a business task in an area that you are passionate about. Continue to seek a role that you love, because it will benefit everyone. - Ask early, and ask often. There is no benefit to waiting. I struggle with this a lot, as anyone I work with in my life can attest to. It is a large goal of mine this summer to become better at asking questions. - Write down every acronym you don't know and look it up later (and ask for a business-specific key) so you can understand what is happening in meetings. - Don't be afraid to be yourself. Teams benefit from diversity of background. It is no use to have forty people with the same mind. - Learn, learn learn. Most of my past two weeks has been learning how KES is organized and what tools I need. I've been working a lot in Power BI and Dataiku, two tools I wasn't super familiar with. And, on that note... I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification: Dataiku Core Designer! I'm looking forward to getting the Advanced Designer certificate during my time with Koch, and maybe more! I recommend this tool if you haven't used it yet. Also, Kansas is incredibly flat and windy. I miss the mountains, but I am enjoying my internship. #LifeWithKoch

I'm so proud to have received a Scholar with Recognition certificate from the UTD MSBA program. This feels like validation of a whole new mindset I've developed towards learning and growth. It's funny, but school was never something I particularly enjoyed. That all changed with a data project in my undergrad. Suddenly, instead of just theory, I was seeing the impact of the concepts in a real-world setting. That ignited something in me. Choosing a master's program was a big step, but UTD has been incredible. I've had the privilege of having amazing professors who truly care about making sure we can apply what we learn. Professor Mandar Samant was particularly fantastic. His classes always felt deceptively easy at the time, but then I'd find myself recalling his lessons in detail later. It all came together for me during an interview where I was able to clearly break down the entire data engineering process precisely because of his teaching methods. This program hasn't only been about classes. Taking risk , helping students and being involved in multiple organizations was a huge growth experience. I learned so much about teamwork and problem-solving that just can't be taught from a textbook UTD has pushed me in the best ways, and the friendships I've made here have been invaluable. Last Friday, I had a Career Development Center meeting with a specialist named Calvin, who helped me with job search strategies and helping me find the right career position for myself. I did learn a lot about applying for certain jobs, and finding a self-paced way to gain experience. I learned about this project website called Forage where I can get self-paced and free work experience in a particular field. I was suggested to put on my resume when it comes to titling my degree, write on there I am a University Studies major with a focus on Mathematics. Most of my coursework is in mathematics so this way when I apply for jobs and internships for economics, finance, and analytic positions can allow the employers to know my degree is relatable to the job. I learned I could add a related coursework section to my resume, which I was unsure about doing before and once I received that suggestion from Calvin it helped me confirm that it is alright to add that to my resume. I learned as long as you are not lying to your future potential employer, you do not have to tell the employer every single detail. Just main things to help make your case for the job applying for.
