Student Spotlight: Dhruva Rayasam Year: Rising Junior in Undergrad Advisor: Colin Schell / Dr. Katrina Groth Research Interests: Data Science, Machine Learning What drew you to engineering? Although I'm a Computer Science major, I wanted to apply my skills to projects that impact real-world infrastructure and make the world a safer place. What made you want to reach out? I was eager to gain experience in undergraduate research. Dr. Groth's work on HyCReD and the rest of the CRR strongly appealed to me, not only as an opportunity to advance my professional goals but also as a chance to contribute to something meaningful. What have you liked about working with the SyRRA lab? The part I like the most about working at SyRRA is the sense of community. Many workplaces have abandoned this sense of kinship, but here, everyone has a bond with each other, and I'm grateful to be a part of that. Would you consider studying reliability engineering? Since I am aiming for a master's in Machine Learning, I would not consider graduate work in Reliability Engineering at this time. However, this is always subject to change, as Reliability Engineering incorporates a lot of statistics and modeling, both subjects that interest me and that I want to pursue further. What advice would you give to undergrads? Be communicative, open-minded, and persistent. SyRRA is a community where work is done as a team rather than individually; asking for help is always encouraged, and being communicative will keep your peers in the loop and help you produce higher quality work. Being open-minded and persistent is crucial to succeeding at SyRRA, as there's a lot to learn and staying consistent is essential in meeting objectives. Most of all, being a team player and passionate about your work will help you thrive at SyRRA. #StudentSpotlight #UndergradResearch #DataScience #MachineLearning #Engineering #Community #SyRRA #ResearchLab #ComputerScience #UndergraduateStudies #STEM #UMDEngineering #UMDReliabilityEngineering
