CRO practitioners rant regularly about avoiding channel-based thoughts. It’s not just about stakeholder expectations and a longer process that takes time to fully establish. It’s that the impact you see at the surface level on website performance does not tell the full story. Testing will increase conversion rates and revenue, and it’s easy to measure. That’s not all though. Because your website converts users better, it means the ROAS for your ads will be higher. Think about it for a second, it’s a pretty big deal. Users click an ad and do not magically buy. They need to browse a landing page, consider their buying decision and complete a purchase. Same goes for filling a demo request! If if ROAS increases, then it either means that you can acquire more users for the same budget, or that your ad spend becomes more efficient and you can reallocate. Many orgs can eventually pay off their entire testing program costs by this nature. So is website testing a channel? Not really, it’s just part of the customer journey. When we start thinking holistically, then this function of the business will have positive rewards for every channel. Yes, it’s a cost to approach web development and website strategy methodically. Thinking about it with a channel mindset is opting into a limited view of what it can do for the org. Revenue and ROI are great, but when you can make every other online initiative win as well, then even though not easy to measure, surely that must accelerate business growth.

🔥 Agency Growth Hack: Buy another agency ... this is possible even for smaller agencies without a lot of cash stacked.... hear me out! When growing Inflow® over the years, I missed out on one growth strategy that, in hindsight, would have been clutch: buying another agency. I could have purchased an agency similar in size and service offerings for 0% down using SBA financing (and solving for a tough hiring market at the time). Another option would have been buying a complimentary agency like an email marketing or affiliate marketing agency where we could cross-sell services to a more extensive client base. My friends at CapForge Bookkeeping & More (where I am a client) explained this strategy excellently in a recent blog post (link in comments). Brodie Clark shared massive news this morning: "AI Overviews for Non-logged in users" This got me thinking about how it is impacting SEO and click-through rates. In the past, there has been a lot of focus on the featured snippets, which, and why not, generally had more than 10% CTR for a page. Interestingly, I found Google stating: ➡ "And we see that the links included in AI Overviews get more clicks than if the page had appeared as a traditional web listing for that query." (screenshot attached) Would this be the new optimization avenue for SEOs? Why does measuring in-app ROAS suck, and why do so many marketing agencies not freaking get it? I spend a significant amount of time repairing broken conversion events in paid media platforms. Here are the top 5 culprits: 1. Website changes (design updates, domain changes) 2. CRM changes 3. GTM changes (often related to 1 and 2) 4. Trying to run an old Google Analytics tag 5. Integration with tech partner is broken All 5 require conversations with other people on other teams to diagnose, troubleshoot, and fix. Why SEO Execs Are Often More Skilled Than SEO Gurus. Something I run into regularly online is my own content. My images, my ideas, my thoughts. Except...it isn't mine. Someone took the thoughts or images, altered them slightly (or greatly), and published them as their own. With the emergence of more tools that support this, along with 'guru' encouragement, the sheer speed and scale of copying are at an all-time high. I don't mind this. I get inspired all the time by the content of others. The problem is that you end up with people providing insight they never experienced and earned. All for likes and followers. This is the SEO hustle club. Just because they talk like an SEO and act like an SEO online does not mean they are able to do SEO. In reality, thousands of SEO execs work in the trenches, doing more 'day-to-day' work than many of these gurus. "But they've done the SEO work?" Really? Are you sure? This is why I'm so passionate about SEOs (who are in the trenches) finding their voices and sharing their hard-earned insights, knowledge and experience. In fact, it's these posts that get my attention online. Not another long flow diagram of 100 things the SEO made up that they do for clients that you can 'steal' from them. Or the snazzy slide deck of content formats that drove £1 billion in revenue (Dr Evil laugh included for free). Make no mistake. There are thousands of SEO grafters with zero followings who are doing the hard work for clients while gurus plan their next YouTube video or webinar to sell you coaching, paid links, or any other get-rich-quick idea. SEO is about showing up daily. Doing the work that compounds in value. Winning ground in inches, not miles. That's why most of the SEO content I find of value, is written by those without followings. Because they pour their heart and graft into the content they create. And are doing it for the industry, not to build a following.

IMHO technical SEO is a bad place to 'specialize' in. 1. Most websites don't have a big enough content footprint for technical SEO to be "the play" 2. Technical SEOs are the easiest to hire, they are everywhere. 3. TBH, you don't even need to hire a technical SEO to "make the website faster", you can hire an even larger pool of devs Dont get me wrong, there are places technical SEOs can make a huge impact. But these are brands like Reddit, LinkedIn, Quora, Medium, Wise, Zapier, etc. and there just isn't as many of these types of brands as there are "technical SEOs'

Prompt engineering - either a meaningless term or a frustrating one - is essentially a way to write more efficient prompts for an LLM like ChatGPT or similar.  I've been asked a few times recently about prompt guides/engineering; is there an essential list of prompts we should use etc? Well, I'm not a fan of copy-and-paste prompts being offered up as THE solution ❌ Whilst you can get some mileage out of duplicating well-established prompts, the models behind them change and develop quickly, and SOME services handle some prompts better than others. Why not take the time now to practice better prompt writing? 1️⃣ Start with a broad problem/question and ask for more information about the subject. If you're really not sure where to start, this will help give you better context. 2️⃣ Ask for a process to solve the problem or work to break the problem down into the different stages yourself. 3️⃣ Give specific instructions around each point of the process, test after each time, tweaking and getting it right. 4️⃣ If something is more complex or you don't know how to simplify any more, ask for a chain-of-thought answer to see a "thinking out loud" style response. 5️⃣ Review the detail to understand what is being done and challenge any issues with examples AND detail HOW it should be. There are more specific guides here (https://buff.ly/3GInnca) for working with OpenAI, but the general points above will help the process be less frustrating and increase your output's accuracy. Once you get used to writing prompts you'll find you don't need to break it down into so many stages - it will speed up. But I'd rather get the right answer slower, than getting the wrong output really quickly, which is the usual fear in using LLM outputs.

Be weary of CRO services marketing agencies offer. Often times, it’s not what they claim it is. They will lump CRO into channels and ROI-immediate tactics. The definition is building a growth function based on a comprehensive and strategic process that collects and activates insights through research and iterative testing to measurably drive growth. A great way for you to differentiate is to look at what activities are conducted and how they all fit in the puzzle. A lot of feedback that I hear is based on them doing individual activities and calling it a day - building a landing page in Unbounce, Instapage, etc. - a site audit that is not even backed with Heuristics - testing that is done with no supporting research and no articulated test plan They will skip the research in favor of speed to delivery and may not optimize that landing page once it goes live. You can recognize it’s incomplete by the fact it’s missing a continuous improvement cycle. It’s also not customer-focused and clearly all stems from an internal database they have, regardless of your audience and the issues that prevent your users from converting. Any testing that is not robustly structured around test plans and supported with research is probably the same template they apply to all their clients. Be weary of them, because regardless of price point, they are selling something tactical that is most likely to not drive significant impact for the business. Marketing agencies very rarely have the skillsets and competencies to build an optimization program. There are no silver bullets. There aren't any one time quick fixes for scaling a business. There are no universal truths for what works and there isn’t a single test that is always going to win. Most tests don’t even win even when they are backed with research. Be weary, be skeptical. I encourage you to trust agencies when their talk track focuses on their process involved for optimization, and their customer-focused approach. It’s easier to sell a promise of results than to sell a process.
