Hard to believe, but true. For some years now, carmakers have been clearly showing their intention to electrify their ranges, and even to offer only 100% electric vehicles by 2030. Notably Mercedes-Benz, who had launched their major EQ project, aimed at hybridizing or electrifying their range. We've seen the discontinuation of certain models and engines, especially from Mercedes' Sport/Performance division: AMG. The legendary 4.8-liter V8 Biturbo was retired last year, notably on the C class and E class ranges, to become a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder coupled with an electric motor and a 6.1kWh battery pack. Hybrid motorization, then, being far more powerful on paper (2023 version: 510hp / 2024 version: 671). However, it seems that sales have been catastrophic for the German company. So much so, in fact, that the company has decided to put the EQ project on hold, or at least put the brakes on development of the top-of-the-range models. A new model, the CLE 63 AMG, is due to be announced shortly. Initially planned to use the same engine structure as the C and E class AMG, it would appear that the manufacturer decided to change its plans at the last minute. Indeed, the legendary 4.8-liter V8 Biturbo is set to make a comeback, much to the delight of fans. Mercedes has yet to issue an official statement, so it's best not to get overexcited, but I'd advise keeping your eyes open. It will be interesting to see what impact this change might have on sales, both in Europe and the USA, but also in Asia. Thank you for taking the time to read me.

A Win for Detroit The new rule for car makers from the US Government gives them a bit more time to adjust to fuel efficiencies and the electrification movement. A possible reason why is that foreign car makers are leaps and bounds ahead on the technology and manufacturing curve compared to American OEMs. Without this rule, huge shifts in sales and market share would have possibly moved to foreign car markers, and the US OEMs would have been burdened with huge fines. Volkswagen Group is embarking on restructuring measures unheard of in Germany as a result of having allowed issues at its namesake brand to fester for years.The automaker plans to close at least three German factories, shrink all other remaining sites in the country and slash wages by 10 percent for around 140,000 workers. It’s also looking to freeze pay next year and in 2026 and abolish one-off payments to long-tenured employees. SMMT stats show increase in EVs entering used car market Increasing numbers of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are now entering the used car market, with Q1 sales up by more than two thirds (71.0%) to 41,505 – posting a new record market share of 2.1%. Overall, the UK’s used car market rose by 6.5% in the first quarter of 2024 with 1,967,923 units finding new owners – the strongest start to a year since pre-pandemic 2019, according to the latest figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The increase marks 16 months of successive growth, reflecting recovering supply in the new car market which is in turn improving availability and choice of second-hand motors. Used car transactions have risen in every month of the year to date1 but, despite this robust growth, the quarter’s transactions remain -2.6% below pre-Covid levels. BEVs are the fastest growing powertrain as more buyers are attracted to the potential cost-saving and environmental benefits. Hybrids (HEVs) also continued to sell in greater volumes, with 74,502 changing hands in a 49.3% rise. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), too, grew in popularity, with sales up 42.5% to 22,065. [NEWS] Volkswagen is trying to undo “decades of structural problems:” Just days after VW reported a 42% drop in Q3 operating profit… CEO Oliver Blume announced aggressive cost-cutting measures, including closing at least three factories in Germany and cutting wages by 10%. But it won’t be easy. Union workers are promising a “hot winter” if Blume moves ahead with his plan – and at this point, strikes could be devastating for the automaker.
