From 2025 a full electric truck available from Volvo with a 600km range. Just another nail in the coffin for the idea that we should use hydrogen for transport. No real surprises for those that follow this space seeing trucks moving towards full electrification. We still need huge investment in the supporting infrastructure with truck superchargers that can handle up to 4,000kW per truck. Just for comparison a Tesla supercharger can charge at up to 160kW per car. The new Volvo FH Electric has 540kWh of batteries so about 10x that of a normal EV.
I’m excited to share news that we are developing a new long-range version of the Volvo FH Electric with up to 600 kilometers on one single charge! The technology enabler for this breakthrough is our in-house developed e-axle. This new propulsion is a key concept in our transformation towards 100% fossil free. Thanks to integrated electric motors and gearbox with the e-axle, we can free up space for significantly more battery capacity onboard. This will allow transport companies to operate electric trucks on interregional and long-distance routes and to drive a full working day without having to recharge. At Volvo Group, we don’t believe in one silver bullet for decarbonized transport. We have a three-path strategy to reach net-zero-emissions by 2040 – battery electric, fuel cell electric and internal combustion engines that run on renewable fuels.
