Kamdar, MD, along with our Clinical Advisory Board Co-Chairs, Dr. Vicki Jackson and Dr. Areej El-Jawahri, were co-investigators on a groundbreaking study recently presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting in Chicago. The study, titled "Comparative Effectiveness of Early Palliative Care Delivered via Telehealth Versus In-Person for Patients with Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Randomized Trial," highlights the significant potential of telehealth in delivering high-quality, early palliative care. Key findings from this large-scale study demonstrate that telehealth can effectively provide palliative care, equivalent to in-person visits, in improving the quality of life for patients with advanced NSCLC. This research underscores the importance of innovative care delivery models, particularly in enhancing access and continuity of care for seriously ill patients. Last week's Patient Engagement Forum organized by Patient Voice Partners was a powerful reminder of the critical role patients play in shaping healthcare innovation. I had the privilege of participating in a dynamic panel discussion alongside Jason Copping and Judith Glennie, moderated by Bibaswan Ghoshal. The conversation was engaging, insightful, and underscored the importance of collaboration—and there’s so much more to explore. A heartfelt thank you to Ursula Mann and her team for organizing such an impactful event.   When we consider how patients can engage throughout the drug development journey, some of the key takeaways for me included: - From the earliest stages of innovation to commercialization, patient input is invaluable. - Patients help pinpoint priority areas for research investment. - Ensuring innovations fit into real-world care routines is essential. - Having patients advise on comfort, retention, and diverse representation is important when designing clinical trials. - Testing solutions to ensure usability and accessibility, especially for underrepresented groups, is crucial. - Dissemination of research results and impacts - Engaging stakeholders to align with regulators and payors helps improve access. By integrating patient perspectives at every stage, the solutions developed will truly address their needs, improve outcomes, and create a more equitable healthcare system. Gruenfeld introduces the body languages of authority and being approachable. Becoming fluent in matching body language to each situation can be a source of power and influence. Gruenfeld also shares leading social science research on the ways in which body language affects your psychology, in addition to influencing how others perceive you.

Millions struggle with insomnia. Some turn to medication to turn off their brains. A sleep psychologist at the University of Michigan Health says drugs that help you sleep are not the only answer. “Prescriptions for sleep aids have doubled over the past 20 years. The problem is that over time, with repeated use of sleep aids, the effects on sleep can wane. And so, what we know is that alternative treatments or treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy, when used in addition to medications or instead of medications, is that that can be a more durable approach, where the sleep tends to improve over time, and the sleep improvements can last longer,” said Sleep Psychologist Dr. Deirdre Conroy, PhD. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for sleep is now considered the frontline treatment for insomnia. I first heard about the impact of private equity in medicine at the @AmerMedicalAssn  HOD meetings in Chicago.  Colleagues from diverse medical specialties openly discussed the challenges they were facing when their practices were operating under a private equity model.  They voiced their concerns about patient care and health outcomes in addition to workforce stability.  Recently @AlzAssociation #AAIC2024 meeting, my colleagues and I from the GEAR network ( https://lnkd.in/gXugPrWg ) highlighted some of these concerns as we discussed the increasing use of disease modifying drugs for Alzheimer’s disease and the potential for adverse events ( i.e. ARIA) - that may result in an emergency department (ED) visit.  We highlighted important issues regarding patients presenting to the ED who may be experiencing an adverse event. ·      Is the ED, its physicians, and healthcare teams, equipped and ready for potential visits from patients who may be having an adverse event on while on these drugs? ·      Are the communication channels in place with all members of the workforce to ensure safe health outcomes in this changing environment? A new broadly inclusive definition of long COVID from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) has been developed with the aim of improving consistency, documentation, and treatment for both adults and children. According to the 2024 NASEM definition of long COVID issued on June 11, 2024, "Long COVID is an infection-associated chronic condition that occurs after SARS-CoV-2 infection and is present for at least 3 months as a continuous, relapsing and remitting, or progressive disease state that affects one or more organ systems."  People with long COVID may present with one or more of a long list of symptoms, such as shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, extreme fatigue, post-exertional malaise, or sleep disturbance and with single or multiple diagnosable conditions, including interstitial lung disease, arrhythmias, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), diabetes, or autoimmune disorders. The condition can exacerbate preexisting health conditions or present as new ones.

Navigating Rejection and Recognition: Insights from 40 Years of Climate and Health Data at Hajj We are proud to announce our two pivotal studies published in Environmental Health Perspectives (https://lnkd.in/dkm-29DW) and the Journal of Travel Medicine (https://lnkd.in/dXE_es3W), shedding light on the health risks faced by pilgrims in Mecca. The latter study specifically highlights the escalating climate-related health risks for Hajj pilgrims, utilizing a comprehensive 40-year dataset. Our findings demonstrate a strong correlation between rising temperatures and the incidence of heatstroke and heat exhaustion among over two million annual pilgrims from 180 countries, underscoring the representativity and generalizability of our work. Despite the critical implications of our research, it was initially rejected—sometimes within just a few hours—by prestigious journals like Lancet Public Health, Planetary Health and Nature Climate Change, without explanations or opportunities for peer review. This swift dismissal reflects a troubling bias within scientific publishing, where innovative research that deviates from conventional Western-focused narratives or challenges established scientific domains often faces undue resistance or disregard. The relevance of our study has been dramatically underscored by the tragic events of this year's pilgrimage, where temperatures soared above 50°C, resulting in numerous fatalities. These alarming conditions have drawn significant attention from major global media outlets, including CNN, BBC, and The Washington Post, with more than 17 news outlets such as MSN and The New York Times citing our work (https://lnkd.in/dBcRxPr9). This widespread media interest confirms the initial bias of these journals. As the senior author of this study, I am compelled to advocate not only for the robustness and relevance of our findings but also for a shift in the scientific community towards more equitable and inclusive publishing practices. We must ensure that all relevant science, regardless of origin, is given a fair platform to influence global health strategies effectively.
