The electric vehicle (EV) segment is growing, but not quickly since traditional automotive manufacturers have only developed a few options. The electric vehicle (EV) segment is growing, but not quickly since traditional automotive manufacturers have only developed a few options. The narrative consumers continue to hear is that more EV options would be produced, but there is no demand. The Chevrolet Jolt EV project was developed to disprove this narrative.

The media and consumers have little to be excited about in the EV segment, thus disruptive newcomers such as Tesla Motors get a great deal of attention. My assertion is that it is not the Tesla brand, but their approach that is the reason for success. The lines of thousands of consumers that placed deposits for the Model 3 is the proof. Thus, through the Chevrolet Jolt EV project I wanted to create a data driven case study to prove the following:

    - There is great demand for more EVs from traditional OEMs, but little variety exists
    - There is an ideal combination to create excitement for EVs:
    1. Compelling design
    2. Long range of 200+ miles
    3. DC fast charging must be included
    4. Robust charing infrastructure to support long distance travel
    - Tesla's success is not due to their brand, it is because their model is correct

The result: within the first 48 hours the Chevrolet Jolt EV website reached all 50 states, over 120 countries worldwide, and over 20,000 hand raisers expressed interest in the vehicle. The data proved my theory: produce compelling EV variety equipped with DC fast charging supported by infrastructure, consumers will line up to purchase the vehicles.

Will the Chevrolet Jolt EV be produced? I truly hope so. Regardless, the media and consumers now have a data driven case study that proves EV variety is in demand. The brands that step up with new EVs that meet consumer needs will see a great deal of success.
