Pasa Sustainable Agriculture
Last week we teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania, along with Feeding Pennsylvania, for the first “Connecting Farmers & Food Banks” panel discussion. We explored how state and federal agricultural programs can boost Pennsylvania’s food system by supporting farmers and producers while tackling food insecurity in our communities. Through programs like the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System (PASS) and Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA), farmers can overcome common supply chain challenges to ensure they are getting fairly paid for the food they grow and that fresh food is making its way to folks who need it. Swipe to hear how PA farmers have benefited from programs like PASS and LFPA. ➡️ Following the event, Pasa Executive Director, Hannah Smith-Brubaker shared: “We believe attendees left feeling connected with peers, informed about potential opportunities, and inspired to create new distribution channels and partnerships to strengthen local and regional food systems." If you’re a farmer or producer curious about opportunities to achieve this mission, reach out to Tom Mainzer, Director of Agricultural Partnerships at Feeding Pennsylvania, at [email protected]. . . . #knowyourfarmer #knowyourfood #knowyourfarmerknowyourfood # regenerativeagriculture #farmtotable #smallscalefarming #localfarmers #regenerativefarming #locallygrown #supportlocalfarmers #farmtofork #foodjustice #fodsovereignty #foodsecurity

Hear ye, hear ye 🔔 Letter from a Farmer in Pennsylvania 🗽 At the heart of American agriculture lies the enduring spirit of the Pennsylvania farmer. In our latest entry, Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania, we highlight the powerful narrative of how farm life has evolved with the rise of technology and the data their farms produce. This letter delves into the critical role that data plays in modern farming—from ensuring better animal welfare to improving sustainability—all while maintaining the legacy of stewardship passed down through generations. At AgriGates, we’re committed to providing North American farmers with the most advanced tools to own their data and make informed decisions that benefit their operations, communities, and the environment, all while unlocking the full value of their data. Whether you're on a small family farm or part of a larger operation, our mission remains the same: empowering producers with data-driven insights that respect the rural heritage of farming. It’s time for farmers to take control of their data and not miss out on this vital revolution in agriculture technology and data. 📖 Read the full letter here and discover how farmers are a critical part of driving a revolution in innovation and AgriTech: https://lnkd.in/gw6CHSBp Letter by Daniel Foy #Agritech #DataOwnership #Sustainability #FarmToFuture #AgriGates #USFarming #TraditionAndInnovation

New York Tree Crops Alliance
Our growers coop is always on the look out for potential "cultivar" trees displaying desirable qualities such as enhanced cold hardiness, productivity, pest and disease resistance, and flavor. That includes hazelnut and chestnut trees found in our own orchards. However clonal/vegetative propagation of these (creating exact copies) can be challenging for a variety of reasons. One of our member farms, Z's Nutty Ridge LLC, recently completed a Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program funded research project looking at one promising method for chestnuts, stool bed layering. This involves encouraging new suckers from the base of the tree, and the formation of roots on those before cutting. Their research focused on two particular variables, hormone treatment and timing of when to layer. Read more about this work on our latest blog post (which includes free downloadable user guides explaining how you can do this yourself): https://lnkd.in/eh6Rswup #treepropagation #chestnuts

Botany One
Diverse grasslands support stable crop yields and thriving pollinator communities 📝 🧵 https://botany.fyi/9f4p97 Mixing clover varieties with other plants can boost both farm productivity and biodiversity. #Botany #PlantScience #InBrief Many farmers are looking to intercropping to improve yield stability, instead of relying on monocultures. But can wildlife benefit from this too? Ferrante and colleagues studied how different white clover varieties grown alone or with other plants affect pollinator communities. They set up experiments in two sites in Germany. They found that diverse grasslands can support both stable crop yields and diverse pollinator communities, indicating that farmers may be able to boost both productivity and biodiversity. The ecologists found that insects really like white clover. If you want a result that shows monocultures are bad, then disappointingly white clover grown alone attracted the highest number and diversity of pollinators compared to mixed plantings. It didn’t matter which white clover they grew. However, some pollinator species were found only in mixed plantings, suggesting the importance of plant diversity. The researchers set up experimental plots with white clover grown alone and in mixes with grasses and chicory. They then counted flower-visiting insects like bees and hoverflies in the different plot types for five years. The plots were laid out in two contrasting agricultural landscapes - one more diverse, one more uniform. Previous studies found that more diverse agricultural landscapes generally support more pollinators, and this does at first glance contradict those findings. However, what Ferrante and colleagues believe is important is the abundance of flowers. “We recorded a large number of pollinator species (∼40 %) that also foraged on plant species other than white clover, and ∼22 % of the recorded species were never observed foraging on white clover.” The team also add that the lack of pollinator preference for different white clover populations offers a “win-win” scenario for farmers, as they can choose the clover that works best for them. “Overall, the results from this work suggest that providing abundant floral resources and promoting plant diversity at small scales may be critical if we are to support both pollination service and a diverse pollinator community, and that we need to consider the surrounding landscape to understand the effectiveness of grassland cropping systems.” Ferrante, M., Kirsch, F., & Westphal, C. 2025. Stable pollinator communities in different white clover populations suggest potential win-win scenarios for crop yield and biodiversity. Becof Organic Chemicals
🌱 Field Testing Update in Kajiado County: Becof AgroShield in Action! 🌱 Yesterday, our team took to the field for an exciting test of our plant-based insecticide, Becof AgroShield, on a variety of vegetables – including kales, sagaa, managu, and bell peppers – previously affected by aphids and leafy worms. 🐛🌿 With sustainability and innovation at our core, we developed Becof AgroShield to offer farmers an eco-friendly, powerful defense against pests, ensuring crops stay healthy and free from harmful chemicals. As part of our commitment to environmentally friendly solutions, we’ve used natural ingredients that protect the plants without compromising soil health or human safety. 🌍✨ Our initial observations show promising results: crops are healthier, leaves appear less damaged, and pest activity is noticeably reduced. 🍃💪 We look forward to continuing these trials and gathering more insights as we aim to empower farmers with sustainable agricultural solutions that support both productivity and environmental health. Stay tuned for more updates on our journey to a greener, pest-free future! Mycorrhizal Applications
Happy #NationalPollinatorWeek DYK - the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) has published Best Management Practices for bee health in the horticulture industry? They listed some great strategies: 🐝 Before treating the plant, determine its level of bee pollinator attractiveness. 🐜 Consider using Integrated Pest Management strategies (like biologicals!) for pest control and avoid unnecessary preventive applications. 🦋 Avoid spraying pollinator-attractive plants with systemic insecticides toxic to bees the last three weeks before shipping and sale. 🐞 Always read and follow label instructions and application restrictions. The label is the law, and these directions are intended to protect pollinators. It's a good read - take a look! https://lnkd.in/gzeJdFYu #protectpollinators #biologicalcontrol #pollinatorweek #sustainablegrowing #HRI #GrowWiseBeeSmart
