🚨Two of #AI’s biggest players are teaming up: Amazon just planted its flag with Team Anthropic (Google original investor) 👈🏼 . It gave the Claude-maker a $4B infusion, and in exchange, Anthropic agreed to make Amazon Web Services (AWS) its primary compute partner. It’ll also use Amazon’s custom chips for training — a risky move, since it might have to scale back on NVIDIA’s gold-standard GPUs in the process. How is #Anthropic different from #ChatGPT? Anthropic's differentiator is AI safety. Unlike OpenAI’s GPT-4, which has been trained on human preferences — Anthropic pioneered a purposeful approach for their Claude models called “constitutional AI”. What else can we expect from OpenAI now that search is launched? A crew of people who know (including Sam Altman, CEO, and Kevin Weil, Chief Product Officer) just completed an AMA on Reddit. I had o1-preview analyze it, and here are the key themes: FOCUS AREAS: Enhancing model capabilities (o1 and successors), reducing hallucinations, improving multilingual support, and expanding context windows. UPCOMING FEATURES: Advanced Voice enhancements (singing), AI agents, autonomous task execution, and possibly NSFW content toggles in the future. Thanks for sharing these insights. What I am seeing is that orgs test an idea using a proprietary #LLM like #OpenAI, then put it into production with an open source LLM using a development platform like #Llamaindex. That way, private data remains private.

OpenAI just announced a $200/monthly access for ChatGPT Pro. https://lnkd.in/gfacR57t It's offering "scaled access" and smarter models. Right now, their API is pretty affordable, without a $200-a-month bill. It'll be disappointing if they apply new scaling restrictions to everything that isn't ChatGPT Pro. For the smarter models, users have become less sensitive to those differences. It's not that important, in my experience, that the model can solve some very difficult coding problems. Doing that better doesn't mean it handles operational use-cases better. When it fails, it's often because it's missing context, like making mistakes with recently released software because that software isn't in its training data. I'll probably pay for this because I have some scaled client use-cases, but I'd be surprised if there are huge sign ups for such a price point.

🚨 BREAKING: The Governor of California VETOED the AI Safety Bill SB-1047, supported by Elon Musk, Anthropic, and opposed by OpenAI, Meta & Google. This development DEEPLY AFFECTS the AI governance debate, here's why: 1️⃣ The AI Bill SB-1047, called "Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act," would apply to AI models "trained using a quantity of computing power greater than 10^26 integer or floating-point operations, the cost of which exceeds one hundred million dollars ($100,000,000) when calculated using the average market prices of cloud compute at the start of training as reasonably assessed by the developer." 2️⃣ Among its safety provisions, after significant amendments suggested by the tech industry, were to implement safety measures before starting to train the model and to allow California’s attorney general to seek injunctive relief (making a company cease the AI-related operations it finds dangerous) and sue an AI developer if its model causes a catastrophic event. 3️⃣ The bill was APPROVED by California's Legislature in August, and among its supporters were Elon Musk, Anthropic, Boston Dynamics, and scientists like Gary Marcus. 4️⃣ Among the opposers of the bill were OpenAI, Meta, Google & Microsoft, and scientists like Yann LeCun, Fei-Fei Li & Andrew Ng. When opposing the Bill, the AI Alliance stated that it "would slow innovation, thwart advancements in safety and security, and undermine California’s economic growth. The bill’s technically infeasible requirements will chill innovation in the field of AI and lower access to the field’s cutting edge (...)” 5️⃣ In his veto, Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, stated: "Let me be clear - I agree with the author - we cannot afford to wait for a major catastrophe to occur before taking action to protect the public. California will not abandon its responsibility. Safety protocols must be adopted. Proactive guardrails should be implemented, and severe consequences for bad actors must be clear and enforceable. I do not agree, however, that to keep the public safe, we must settle for a solution that is not informed by an empirical trajectory analysis of Al systems and capabilities. Ultimately, any framework for effectively regulating Al needs to keep pace with the technology itself." Zero shot learning- the LLMs were not given the opportunity to learn “normal” from the signals before they had to detect anomalies in real time. We call this zero shot learning. Viewed through this lens, it’s an incredible accomplishment. The fact that LLMs can perform zero-shot learning — jumping into this problem without any previous examples or fine-tuning — means we now have a way to detect anomalies without training specific models from scratch for every single signal or a specific condition.

This is a real tragedy and one that will get worse for vulnerable populations as we enter the "second contact of AI with humanity" through generative AI. The first contact as we all know was about "AI engagement" and brought us social media's well-documented challenges—polarization, misinformation, and privacy issues. This next phase will be about "AI intimacy" and will be far more insidious especially for vulnerable groups like teens and the elderly. As AI systems become more embedded in our lives, scrutinize every chatbot and virtual assistant in your apps with a critical eye. OpenAI just over a week ago announced its new board and the wrap-up of an internal investigation by U.S. law firm WilmerHale into the events leading up to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s ouster. OpenAI did not publish the investigation report but provided a summary of the findings. “The review concluded there was a significant breakdown of trust between the prior board and Sam and Greg,” Taylor said, adding that the review also “concluded the board acted in good faith... [and] did not anticipate some of the instability that led afterwards.” Taylor also said the board’s concerns did not arise regarding concerns over product safety and security, OpenAI’s finances or statements to customers or business partners, that it was “simply a breakdown in trust between the board and Mr. Altman.” ****** Comment: And within a week or so the Superalignment leadership resign! Facepalm. Seriously. Microsoft, Google, Perplexity, Clean yo shit up... Wired: "Google, Microsoft, and Perplexity Are Promoting Scientific Racism in Search Results. The web’s biggest AI-powered search engines are featuring the widely debunked idea that white people are genetically superior to other races." (Oct 24, 2024) "AI-infused search engines from Google, Microsoft, and Perplexity have been surfacing deeply racist and widely debunked research promoting race science and the idea that white people are genetically superior to nonwhite people. Patrik Hermansson, a UK researcher was in the middle of a months-long investigation into the resurgent race science movement when he needed to find out more information about a debunked dataset that claims IQ scores can be used to prove the superiority of the white race. He was investigating the Human Diversity Foundation, a race science company funded by Andrew Conru, the US tech billionaire who founded Adult Friend Finder. The group, founded in 2022, was the successor to the Pioneer Fund, a group founded by US Nazi sympathizers in 1937 with the aim of promoting “race betterment” and “race realism.” Hermansson logged in to Google and began looking up results for the IQs of different nations. When he typed in “Pakistan IQ,” rather than getting a typical list of links, Hermansson was presented with Google’s AI-powered Overviews tool, which, confusingly to him, was on by default. It gave him a definitive answer of 80. When he typed in “Sierra Leone IQ,” Google’s AI tool was even more specific: 45.07. The result for “Kenya IQ” was equally exact: 75.2. Hermansson immediately recognized the numbers being fed back to him. They were being taken directly from the very study he was trying to debunk, published by one of the leaders of the movement that he was working to expose. The results Google was serving up came from a dataset published by Richard Lynn, a University of Ulster professor who died in 2023 and was president of the Pioneer Fund for two decades. A WIRED investigation confirmed Hermanssons’s findings and discovered that other AI-infused search engines—Microsoft’s Copilot and Perplexity—are also referencing Lynn’s work when queried about IQ scores in various countries. Agree. Both #Astra and #ChatGPT4o (Omni) can be used to get a lot out of AI capabilities. And remember, Google is putting people on a waitlist (me included) for #Gemini 1.5 Pro and you all know OpenAI has #ChatGPT5 revving and ready to go later this year. Both of these will be upgrades to what we've seen this week so far. Plus, Microsoft and others will weigh in soon with their own deployments that may be equal or outmatch... All of this is just commercial juggling releasing immature #AI before the real definitive commercial versions come out. OpenAI launched early with ChatGPT-3 and made a killing in attention, even though the AI was not that great, yet. Likely, if OpenAI hadn't shown their hand, MS and Google would not have released their less-than-mature AI in 2023. 2024 is the year where the real stuff is coming out. They always wanted it to be multimodal, and integrated into their tools/software people are already using (Google/Microsoft etc...). This is just the beginning...

Oof, this is a doozy. Google released its "AI Overview" feature earlier this month, which uses Gemini's #AI to summarize search results into short paragraphs. Unfortunately for Google, they forgot that a lot of the stuff on the internet is not just wrong but absurd - a fact highlighted when surfaced through a chat interface in response to a question, and compounded by the use of technology that will also produce false answers from time to time. Some of the unusual answers it has provided to users in the past month include... (*Disclaimer - all of these answers are wrong, please do not do any of the recommended things!): 🤖 Add (nontoxic) glue to your pizza to keep the cheese from sliding off it 🤖 Doctors recommend smoking 2-3 cigarettes a day during pregnancy 🤖 It's possible to train 8 days a week 🤖 If you run off a cliff you can stay in the air as long as you keep running and don't look down.. 🤖 Geologists at UC Berkely recommend eating at least one small rock per day 🤖 Barack Obama was the first Muslim US president 🤖 13 presidents of the US attended the University of Wisconsin 🤖 Staring at the sun for 5-15 minutes (up to 30 minutes if you have darker skin) is generally safe and provides health benefits 🤖 1919 was 20 years ago 🤖 Fruits that end in "um" include applum, bananum, strawberrum, tomatum, and coconot 🤖 It's always safe to leave a dog in a hot car 🤖 Ren and Stimpy are in the Bible - they are the two sons of Adam and Eve 🤖 No countries in Africa start with the letter "K" 🤖 (Hilariously) Google search violates antitrust law In responding to the press around these kinds of bizarre and wrong answers, Google's Liz Reid yesterday said that most answers produced are correct and the wrong ones represent responses to "uncommon queries"... shifting the blame, much? What's tricky here is that the information available on Google, as all of us know, is wildly varied in its accuracy, bias, hatefulness, etc. Any Google search requires us to apply our critical faculties as we dismiss results from sites we know to be biased, or from Reddit threads or Quora answers or other threads involving non-experts opining on subject matters they may know nothing about, or from satirical sites where content may written in authoritative tones but is intended to be humorous. For Google to release #GenAI across all of these sources and produce summaries from them as though each is equally relevant and reliable to a generated answer makes zero sense. It's harder for us to parse the components of an answer to determine which part is fact and which fiction than it is for us to critically review websites that come up on a search.
