On April 18th, just last week, Meta unveiled Llama 3, lauded as "the most capable openly available LLM to date". This remarkable achievement by the Meta team comes hot on the heels of Llama 2's release last July. Notably, the new models surpass their predecessors and competing offerings from other providers in terms of performance. Meta's commitment to open sourcing these powerful models while prioritizing model safety and responsible usage is commendable. According to Microsoft, the key to achieve high performance in such a small package lies in the quality of the training data. The model has been open sourced and is now available on Ollama and Hugging Face. (https://lnkd.in/gKgSmrBn)   These compact yet powerful models serve as invaluable tools for creators eager to bring their visions to life or simply experiment with cutting-edge technology, particularly for those with limited access to resources.   Shortly after the release of Llama 3, reports began surfacing of enthusiasts running the 8B model on a Raspberry Pi 5 equipped with just 8GB of RAM—a modest $80 single-board computer. Similarly, the Phi-3 Mini model can run on ubiquitous devices such as smartphones.   Reflecting on my own journey, I recall the pivotal role that early access to a low-cost computer played in shaping my passion for coding. The gift of an 8-bit Commodore 64 home computer ignited my curiosity at a young age. Later, with the guidance of an outstanding Computer Science teaching staff at my high school IISS Marconi-Hack Bari, I embarked on ambitious projects like a networked multiplayer version of Battleship written in Turbo Pascal and 8086 Assembly, complete with custom sprites and lo-res graphics. These formative experiences paved the way for my career, eventually leading me to various engineering and leadership roles.   It all began with a simple, low-cost, modestly capable computer used for experimentation—a gateway to discovering my life's passion.   I encourage educators and parents alike to consider setting up similar low-cost experimentation environments. By introducing younger generations to open-source AI technologies, we can nurture their creativity and help them uncover their true passions. I wish I discovered Mermaid's flowchart language in Notion earlier, this tool is so easy and useful to work with. (https://mermaid.js.org/) For example, a lot of our customers have requested Subscription support in RevOps.io. So we're building a Subscription synchronization feature in RevOps.io that tightly couples Renewal and Expansion updates to a Subscription object. Using Mermaid's flowchart language, I can easily show examples of a Customer Lifecycle and a Subscription object. Anyone else finding this tool to be useful?

TL:DR; I’m looking for a partner to lead Terminal7’s dev & community relations. One that groks youtube, reddit & discord and knows how to exit vim. I always wanted to be a one-man-band and as I’m tone deaf, a real band is out of the question.  What’s left for me is to design, develop and market the devtool I need. Today is the 11111111₂ day since the black sabbath and it's time to acknowledge the war drains too much of my energy.  The sadness is deep and multi-layered: for the kidnapped and their families, for the fallen and for my country. It’s Israel’s darkest hour and our gov is not helping, quite the opposite. Even when one of my posts succeeded in sparking discussion on reddit and selling a few subscriptions, the energy boost lasted less than 8 hours. I was completely depleted when it was published that the hostages Yoram Metzger, Chaim Peri and Amiram Cooper and Nadav Poppelwell are dead. I’ve tried to mute the news feed, but it’s not practical nor moral. As an Israeli I feel obligated to read the stories of the fallen and listen to their grieving families.  Whatsmore, as a father to a 19 year old daughter-soldier I don’t need the news feed to remember the young soldiers held by Hamas: Agam, Daniellla, Karina, Liri & Na’ama. It feels like someone installed an engine of sorrow in my stomach. Sometimes it revs faster and sometimes slower, but it’s always there, draining my energy and happiness. I have little control over this engine of sorrow so I’m looking for a partner to help me keep the revs down.  A great communicator to lead Terminal7's marketing while focusing on community relations. The ideal candidate would have experience building and engaging communities, especially on platforms like YouTube, Reddit, and Discord. A good friend recommended me to try Cursor.sh, so I did. I was not ready for what happened next. But first, let's start with a little idea I had for a while. Every time I needed to check a text, I needed to find my tab with ChatGPT, login if disconnected, start a new chat, type "fix typo:" then paste my text to fix, then copy the text back. Not efficient. I knew that using OpenAI APIs I could do a simple website that would do the same, but without the need of writing "fix typo:" every time. A simple hack. Of course I never found time to start this pet project. Until I decided to give it a try with Cursor.sh and made it real is a couple of hours. fix-typos.com

Spotify announced generative AI powered playlists in April in beta, but only recently seems to have started mass scale rollouts. I haven't had time to try them out till earlier this week. And I was able to prompt it with "create a playlist with soulful blues and jazz which match singers like Norah Jones and Melody Gardot with the depth of Adele's voice. I'd like a deep bass rhythm as well". And it produced excellent results. I *love* genAI usecases that reduce manual toil and this is one of them that hits the mark. Now obviously, as I listen to the music, the engineer in me leads me to always dig into the how - and while I wanted to deep dive on their GenAI approach, I landed on a more fundamental post on annotation scaling that I resonated with and is actually the underpinning to great outcomes. I've spent much of the past decade delivering AR platforms, each with diferetn requirements and hardware performance constraints. Lately much of my focus as been getting the best performance and experiences on VisionPro. I will share some tips on performance as well as managing projects as they get larger. First up, consider separating your 2D and 3D views. Often the knowledge, developer skills, and performance ramifications differ widely. Keeping them separated will speed development and reduce bugs.

I'm very proud of a bunch of new search features we just rolled out at DeepCast. Vera Kalinichenko did a lot work early on to evaluate, select, and prototype the foundation of our search architecture, and Oleg Kozlov did the rest of the work to put it into production. This first version was strictly scoped to searching paragraphs in transcript. It was fast and it worked well. In true MVP fashion, we also added a super naive substring match to also search for podcast titles, and episode titles but that obviously didn't work very well in a lot of situations. Since then, we've done a lot of work to identify and summarize common topics, and we've finally combined all of the information into the same search architecture. It sounds complicated, but TL;DR it just made search a whole lot easier to use. At the time of this writing, we've added almost 7 million vectors to the database but results are coming back almost instantaneously. In my personal life I am a leader of several groups of youth in the Boy Scouts of America. The very best merit badge that the Scouts offer, to my way of thinking, is Game Design. And it is the reason why I am a huge fan of the Roblox platform. The requirements for the Game Design merit badge can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gMJ4ku7H In this badge the Scouts learn about the theory and principles of game design and apply those lessons to dissect games they know well and identify the thinking that went into the game to make it fun. They take games they know well and change the rules and then assess whether that makes the game more fun or less fun. And then the Scouts create a new game. It could be physical activity, card-based, board game, dice-based, multi-media or even an app. This is where Roblox and the Roblox Studio for game creation are amazing. Roblox Studio allows people to create a game without having to worry about the nuts and bolts of how to write code, build an app, install it on devices for testing, etc. Studio handles that for them, albeit with the baked in assumption that your game will only be available within the Roblox environment. But that's a plus for most kids, not a limitation. And, honestly, with technology being increasingly shaped by AI, learning the process of Game Design rather than the mechanics of building an app is arguably a greater benefit. Before building their game, the Scouts must propose a concept and pitch it to their merit badge counselor. They can't proceed with development until the pitch is approved. They iterate on the pitch and concept as needed. Then they prototype the game and user test it. Then they get feedback on the game and iterate on it, repeatedly, until they are happy with it. The process is the same whether they're building a board game, a physical sports-based game or a Roblox game. During this process they play their game with other people and may be testing the games being developed by other Scouts at the same time. It's basically an incubator concept deployed for Scouts to learn how to launch a business and leveraging the fact that most people like to play games. If you haven't ever done this, I'd encourage you, as an adult, to go earn the Game Design Merit Badge. It's great fun to do with a group of adults.

A very eloquent summary of the current status of the EU GDPR and AI legislation. The time, energy, and money invested in restrictive legislation that does not provide any consumer benefit could have been leveraged elsewhere. The amount of data collection in EU surprises me every time, the fact that it comes with a long boilerplate explanation about my privacy rights does not make me feel any better either. The EU should rethink how it legislates not only tech.
