🤯🤯🤯 When I first saw the AVA Flat IR Emitter, it floored me. 🤯🤯🤯 You can even innovate on *that?* The whole Custom Install industry has used the same troublesome IR emitter hardware for years. AVA's product designers saw it as an innovation target, fixing a list of issues that everyone had just come to accept. It's great example for innovators: find the problem everyone else overlooks. I often debate this topic, so I've decided to make it into a post. Thank you, Mark Doherty, for initiating this conversation. The consensus is that LEDs require 25% less electricity and generate 25% less heat to produce the same light intensity as other technologies (I'm using 25% to keep this discussion simple). As a result of the reduced heat, LEDs allow for an increase in PPFD, which is directly linked to the potential yield. For instance, while HID technology typically yields about 30g/sq. ft. of marketable flower, our Dragon Alpha II's clients, such as Planet 13 in Vegas and Flower Power in Ft. Collins, CO, are reporting yields exceeding 100g/sq. ft. of premium flower. They are utilizing over 60 watts/sq. ft. compared to the standard 40 w/sq.ft. for HID's. Moreover, HID bulbs, which are chemical-based and operate by running current through a mixture of gases and materials, have a spectrum that changes over time as the bulbs age. In contrast, LEDs provide a consistent spectrum and allow for electronic adjustments to the diodes, enabling control over various colored diodes to achieve the desired spectrum. Previously, with HIDs, we were limited to three spectrum options: HPS, MH, or 10K (Finishing Bulbs), using MH for vegetative growth and HPS for flowering. Now, LEDs offer dynamic spectrum adjustability, freeing cultivators from being confined to one or two spectrum choices and opening up many possibilities. For example, recent research on blueberries has shown that adding red and far-red spectrums to traditional spectrums can significantly impact the fruit's antioxidant and sugar content.  This applies to peppers, strawberries, and many other fruits as well. However, this is only the beginning. Institutions like CSU and UNC are conducting research on annuals, perennials, and food crops. Agricultural research companies are examining the effects of light spectrum on corn, soy, and potato crops, while experts like Bruce Bugbee are exploring the influence of spectrum on hemp and cannabis. Spectrum can be utilized to direct crop growth and alter morphological characteristics of plants, such as internodal length, leaf diameter, and root-to-shoot ratios. Additionally, dynamic spectrum can be employed to trigger cryptochrome/phytochrome responses, simulating a circadian rhythm-like effect in plants. Our clients' switch from HID to LED lighting has led to a 10% increase in THC levels, a doubling of yield (watt for watt), and enhanced cannabinoid/terpene production that HID lighting does not achieve. Those still using HIDs are producing half the amount their LED-using counterparts can, at higher costs and lower quality. The question remains: how will they continue to compete?

Dawning Days of DRM Chapter 2 Blu-ray     Episode 4  BD+ (1) When Fox became one of the original members of the Board of Directors of the BDA, which was formed on October 4 2004, it was speculated that the BDA was required to adopt a security virtual machine based renewability system, one of the three new DRMs identified by Hollywood/MPAA. [Note: See Chapter 2 Blu-ray Episode 2 CPS for Blu-ray (1)] Indeed, Fox was the most vocal for this addition especially because they believed any cipher based technological protection measure even using AES would likely be compromised, therefore it was imperative to provide several counter measures to prevent various attack scenarios such as title key/device key publishing, PC emulators (software), and malicious code on hacked hardware device. Accordingly, it was necessary to implement media transform to disturb playback of hacked content, discovery/run native function to detect PC emulators and malicious code, and forensic function to trace a hacked CE player without affecting Blu-ray technologies, including, but not limited to, navigation/interactive layer as well as authoring and mastering /replication process.   Given extreme complexity of a security virtual machine based renewability system, however, its development was not easy at all. Besides, its basic architecture had been already described in the Self-Protecting Digital Content (“SPDC”) developed by a startup based in San Francisco called Cryptography Research, Inc. (“CRI”) which also owned essential patents. Additionally, it must be supported by the BDA through approval by Board of Directors, which included, among others, Disney, Dell, HP, Philips and Warner, because basic objective to adopt the system was to gain comparative advantages of Blu-ray over HD-DVD. Moreover, it was indispensable to get rid of concerns about its adoption which was raised by certain founders of a consortium developing conventional cipher based technological protection measure using AES, namely AACS (Advanced Access Control System, formerly known as ACMS or Advanced Content Management System). While AACS is defined as format neutral, it was viewed as working on behalf of HD-DVD despite the fact that original 6 founders in 2002 included Sony. [Note: Disney and MEI became the founders in 2004, in addition to IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Sony, Toshiba and Warner. AACS will be discussed in detail in the next episode.]  Complexity did not only reside on technical side. Indeed, it was a hard work to accomplish all the licenses and contractual arrangements, which include not only conventional Adopter Agreement with compliance/robustness rules and Content Participant Agreement but also sublicenses from CRI and service agreements regarding key generation and certification/verification, etc.

The regimen relates to having all tech team members on a daily injection of raising the bar, assisted with a mentor-based huddle to share and keep the team accountable. This daily focus will make each tech better and together the team reclaims downtime, trust me. Always is a rule of culture that ensures the team buys into relentless execution and shares expectation levels higher than exist today. When always is expected sometimes is defeated. At the core of always is commitment and commitment wins the day. Will you support a new *Technology Marketing Research Council to track, report and forecast the development and implementation of processes, materials and equipment for the fabrication of glass and organic substrates used in the burgeoning need created by the accelerated demand for advanced packages? if so, like this post!Innovations from the top down (ICs) as well as from the bottom up (PCBs) are rapidly surfacing around the world as are the forming of new "partnerships" for process development. There are as yet no industry standards. Not all will be broadly applicable for all markets (applications). Performance comes first, then repeatability, then econometrics, then sustainability. Some will fail as they run out of funds before becoming commercially viable. Data collection, forecasts, and technology assessments need to be tracked for those that either wish to enter the fray as well as those seeking secure supply chains. All of the aforementioned as well as risk analysis needs to be conducted on an ongoing basis as the Western World seeks to establish a new (not renewed) position for the impending rise in its chip manufacturing capabilities. It offers eARC capability as well as a number of other inputs. He immediately states that it has a really good image quality especially considering it is the entry point for their 4K line. Dawning Days of DRM Chapter 2 Blu-ray     Episode 4  BD+ (4) Even after BD+ licenses started, hard works continued to convert interim arrangements into the permanent ones. Three US subsidiaries of each Fox, MEI and Sony funded to incorporate BD+ Technologies, LLC (“BD+ LLC”) on May 11, 2006. The BD+ LLC immediately succeeded Sony as a license administrator. The LLC also retained a company to act as a permanent key issuance center in 2008 through requests for proposals process, and outsourced a role of escrow in 2007 as well as certification/verification in 2009. In this way, permanent arrangements replaced interim functions taken care by MEI and Sony one by one. Meanwhile, there were quite surprising moves starting from November 2007. SPDC businesses of CRI was taken over by Macrovision Solutions Corporation (“Macrovision”), which developed analog content protection systems such as AGC and Color Stripe. [Note: See Chapter 1 DVD Episode 2 “MCA Deal” and Episode 5 MPAA - EIA (1) for more detail] Macrovision attempted to be transformed into a versatile technology company and was renamed as Rovi Solution Corporation (“Rovi”) in 2009. [Note: Rovi became Tivo Corporation in 2016 acquiring Tivo Inc., a company for DVRs.] The transformation affected BD+. In November 2011, Rovi sold businesses related to SPDC and content code security program of BD+ to Indeto USA, Inc. (“Irdeto”), which provides digital platform security. Fortunately, however, contractual arrangements amongst CRI, MEI and Sony were fully assigned to Irdeto so that license scheme of BD+ was not affected at all. The other incidents took place in March 2008. Some Fox Blu-ray titles implementing BD+ became copiable by using AnyDVD HD ripping software developed by SlySoft Software Company (“SlySoft”). Since early in 2007 Slysoft had been selling AnyDVD HD that removes the AACS protections. Therefore all Blu-ray titles that were released without a BD+ package could be copied freely. In early October, 2007, it was noted on the hacker forums that some Blu-ray titles contained BD+ and as a result could not be copied freely by the AnyDVD HD. On March 20th, 2008, Slysoft posted an update to their AnyDVD HD software that was able to freely copy most, but not all, BD+ protected Blu-ray titles. [Note: Legal battle with SlySoft will be discussed in the following episode] It was not a surprise for BD+ founders, however, as they had always been anticipated that at some point BD+ packages included in specific Blu-ray titles would be circumvented. Accordingly, BD+ system itself is still intact. Indeed, the main feature of BD+ is its renewability: it is not a static security element. Each Blu-ray title may include a unique BD+ package. Despite these attacks, Fox has been the only studio using BD+ for some reasons. Even Disney, which acquired Fox in 2019, does not show a sign of using the system. In other words, legacy Fox Blu-ray titles are the only pre-recorded Blu-ray discs incorporating BD+.
