During a three-week effort, Future Vertical Cross Functional Team (FVLCFT) partnered with U.S. Army DEVCOM C5ISR Center, U.S. Army DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center and the U.S. Army Redstone Test Center (RTC) at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida to advance Launched Effects (LE) behaviors and characteristics for the #warfighter. FVL completed Phase 3 of the advanced networking waveform characterization during the experimentation. The team collected data on multiple radios and waveforms during multi-ship flights at extended operational ranges against both contested and uncontested environments. Data gathered will be used to inform future aviation modernization; and to validate, modeling and simulation efforts. The intent was to learn about the trade space of long-range air to air; and air to ground communications. The emphasis is increased range and endurance for future LEs combined with a low probability of detection, and a low probability of jamming from perceived threats. LE surrogates successfully demonstrated teaming behaviors, characteristics, and attributes against both contested and uncontested conditions as they negotiated the test area. The top challenge that transitioning military members face when leaving the service is the lack of information on starting their A&P (Airframe and Powerplant certification) process. If you or someone you know is experiencing this challenge, your first step should be to contact the Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) in your local area. For aircraft mechanics looking to obtain their A&P, please note that there are minimum requirements – notably, 30 months of practical experience. If you meet this requirement, there is no need to attend school; you also do not need to go through the military's A&P certification process. While you can choose this route, it will ultimately result in the same 8610-2 forms and authorizations. I personally recommend using the program mentioned above if you don’t have enough practical experience. For instance, if you specialize in avionics and lack powerplant experience, I highly recommend either going through the program or gaining the required experience. If you are a recruiter, HR professional, or director of maintenance, it's valuable to note that the military offers numerous resources. I suggest getting in touch with the Joint Service Aviation Maintenance Technical Certification Council. They have extensive knowledge to support service members in their A&P certification process. As always, Michael Quinn offers some great insights to transitioning servicemembers who want to move into a PM Role. Having done this myself, I can say it is exceedingly rewarding if you like a good mix of planning and execution. Here are a few of my insights to add: 1. Get your PMP Cerfiication - Your “Seasonded Leader with 20+ years of leading projects…” means much less without it. 2. Tech VS Industry - If you worked in a tech field in the military, you have a leg up. If not, you have a challenge ahead of you. Bring a PM means knowing enough of the details to be dangerous. If you don’t speak tech, consider other fields. I work primarily with engineers. While I am not an engineer, my science background allows me to understand their language. 3. Learn MS Project - Yes, there are much better programs out there, but project tends to be the industry standard. The PMI PMP Course does not teach it. Take a course on it online. 4. Milestones - Milestones are important. Unlike the military, Milestones are tied to invoices. Invoices are tied to monthly revenue. Revenue is tied to quarterly stock reports. Stock reports are tied to stock prices. Stock owners are your ultimate stakeholder. Working for the profit motive is a shock for many transitioning service members. 5. Matrixed Organization - “Matrixed Organization” translate to, “You are not in charge.” It is NOT like being on a military staff. Junior team members can and will take their marching orders from their supervisor. This is where that “Leadership” stuff comes in. Mike is correct on talking to at least 5 PMs before deciding if that is the path for you. Partnering with PEO Aviation’s project offices, the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center conducts government-executed Crew Station Working Groups to assess the avionics requirements through human-factors engineering, utilizing early #Soldier evaluations. The key mission of the DEVCOM AvMC Aviation Crew Stations Branch is conducting CSWGs comprising Army and industry partner stakeholders, all with a vested interest in ensuring that Army aviators have the best solution at their fingertips. “We support the end user,” said Jena Salvetti, lead human factors engineer for the Crew Stations branch. “We evaluate prototype interfaces, with users-in-the-loop, while addressing human factors principles, aviation mission tasks, and sub-system conventions to ensure that final designs are intuitive. The CSWG process was designed to ensure aviators have a say in their interfaces rather than pushing an interface to the field and saying, ‘You’ll figure it out.’ One of the things we hear from the field is that systems are not being used because they’re too hard to use. For decades, United States Air Force test and training ranges, like the Nevada Test and Training Range and the Utah Test and Training Range, have provided aircrews with flexible, realistic, multidimensional battle spaces to conduct testing and advanced training. Though only a few years old, the National Space Test and Training Complex (NSTTC) functions as a space-based counterpart, providing unique opportunities for Guardians to hone their warfighting skills in the era of Great Power Competition. Capt. Anthony Guglielmo, 98th Space Range Squadron mission safety officer, acknowledges the concept of a space range can seem abstract to those outside of space-related career fields. PROFESSION and LEADERSHIP 26 years ago today I was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force. Shortly thereafter, I attended pilot training. What I learned over many years as a pilot AND officer/leader/commander: Piloting was mostly a function of what I knew and what I did. Leadership was mostly a function of how I thought and who I was. Some crossover? For sure! But, no amount of technical proficiency in a given job will make someone a leader. So... We must commit ourselves to the SCIENCE of our profession. We must commit ourselves to the ART of leading those entrusted to our care. #leadership

Fully agree with Pete Modigliani and Matt MacGregor in their analysis of winners and losers in the House Appropriations Committee's FY25 Defense Appropriations Bill. Pay raises for service members are great, but prioritizing aircraft (many which are already delayed) over missiles is a poor signal to industry. "Yet at a time when our aircraft, ships, and munitions inventories are at historic lows, while the CCP churn out massive quantities of new systems, this is the worst time to cut procurement budgets. This does not enable production at scale. This does not incentivize new entrants into the industrial base to compete for production contracts."
