Transparent Post: Today’s my last day as a Senior HRBP at Amazon. I've been in office 5-days a week since July 2023, transitioning from 7 years remote work. My decision isn’t related to the recent RTO policy. Sixteen months ago, I made the leap from recruiting to HR, taking on new challenges. In that time I’ve led regional initiatives collaborating with HR leaders across the US, made significant impact to Amazon employee experience, and collaborated with senior leaders in global operations, gaining invaluable insights about myself and my career. Recently, I experienced burnout and a sense of unfulfillment, despite my growth at Amazon. The daily 2.5hr RT commute, long hours, and changing environment also took a toll, leaving me feeling disconnected as a wife and mother. Mornings were a whirlwind of anxiety—getting my daughter ready for school while catching up on her day, and ensuring I connected with my teenager before he left for school because I wasn’t sure if I’d be back home before bedtime. I was physically present but mentally disconnected, and knew I needed to prioritize my mental health and family more. Additionally, my work commitments limited time to take on clients in my coaching business—something that kept me fulfilled as I helped others. I also hadn’t been as active on LinkedIn, sharing tips and insights like before. If you noticed my absence, that’s why. So, what did I do about all of this? I took a four-week leave of absence to focus on my well-being and seek support from my doctor and my therapist. 💡Friendly Reminder/Tip: Use your benefits when you need support, that’s what they are there for. If you’re not sure where to start, reach out to HR💡 This time away from work to focus on my mental health helped me regain clarity about my true desires moving forward and daily steps I needed to take to create an environment I can thrive in. I started journaling daily, took daily walks in the morning, made dinner for my family again and incorporated after dinner family walks. I did what I loved and focused on me. That investment paid off and I’m excited to announce that I’ll be starting a new role on Monday in a senior HR risk and compliance role, leading equal employment programs at Amazon globally. My new manager is amazing, commute is no longer an issue, flexibility/understanding is present, and the team’s energy/enthusiasm is inspiring! I’m thankful that Amazon offers diverse opportunities for employees to transition into roles that align with their career goals and work/life balance needs. Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the challenges that have brought me to this moment and for the incredible people I’ve learned from over the past year at PGA1 and across all of Amazon Global Operations. This past Friday, I had the incredible opportunity to be on the panel for Amazon's Black Employee Network Event for Mental Health Awareness Month. I'm passionate about de-stigmatizing mental health in the workplace. Here are some highlights of what I mentioned on the panel: 1) The concept of "Work/Life Balance" has always felt like a setup for disappointment. You'll have moments where either life is life-ing or work is work-ing and (at least for me) there isn't a single day that I feel as though they're both harmoniously balanced. Instead, I practice "work/life boundaries". One of my boundaries is that during the nightly bedtime routine with my kids, my phone (and the associated work emails and message apps) is inaccessible. Establishing healthy work boundaries will allow you to rock out while you are working and still rock out with your kids, your dogs, or whatever brings you joy in your personal life. 2) Not going to therapy after you've experienced trauma (historical trauma, of which none of us can escape also counts), is like breaking your leg and refusing to put a caste on it...and then wondering why years later you can't walk correctly. I've been in therapy for over a decade and I am not ashamed to admit it. 3) As a leader, it's not realistic to expect those around you to share their stresses, challenges, concerns, anxieties, etc. if you're unwilling to be vulnerable and share yourself. Let's be the change we wish to see in the workplace! Happy Monday, everyone! It’s been a while since I last posted, but I wanted to share my journey following my layoff and the closure of Deviation. The job market is tough right now, and it’s important to remember that if a position doesn’t work out, it’s not personal. Sometimes, it’s due to budget cuts or market conditions, and other times, a top candidate might have years of experience over performance, which isn’t always ideal. I’ve had the privilege of being considered for roles at some incredible companies, including: • Bungie • Epic Games • Bandai Namco • Blizzard • Riot Games • Disney • Wizards of the Coast • Skydance Interactive • Netflix • Turtle Rock Studios • Tencent • Raven Studios • Zenimax • Warner Bros. • And a few exciting startups If you land an interview, trust that you bring value; otherwise, you wouldn’t have been called. Competition is high and always has been. We didn’t choose a career in entertainment because it was easy. Don’t forget why you started in the first place. Drive and determination are key to success in this world. I remind myself of this regularly. With that said, dont lose hope and keep trying. I know I will! In the meantime, learn a new skill or continue to volunteer anywhere you can for a good cause. I’m still looking for my next opportunity. I’m eager to find a role as a producer, having collaborated with creatives for over 10 years. I’m a problem solver who raises flags when I see them and takes ownership to resolve issues before they become roadblocks. People describe me as efficient, and I strive to build efficient teams, fostering collaboration between art and engineering. These challenges and puzzles fuel my passion as a producer. We really do not prioritize the right things for layoffs. As someone who has had to help execute way too many, and been the lucky recipient twice of layoff news - it really is devastating and I've seen people carry the pain/loss of a layoff for YEARS afterwards. In addition to all of the fun financial stress - there are deep feelings of rejection, anger, loneliness and lack of confidence that comes with this. Additionally trauma exposure is such a big thing because people who are impacted have to go on LinkedIn to restart their next life but they've likely connected with everyone from their company - and they'll either see C-suites indicating how unfortunate it was - or fellow employees post how hard it is for them to be a survivor, or other employees who were impacted, putting them into that mindset I can't stress enough - when I help companies with their post-layoff and outplacement services, the focus has to be on mental, the emotional and the deep rooted impact something like this can cause. Some people can just shake it off and are ready to move on to the next, but to others - who wrapped their identity into their work, making sure they have these resources and this time/space/community is just as important as resume reviewing If you're part of a layoff, it's important for you to know you are never alone, your feelings are valid, and you will get past this

Layoff notices usually spell immediate exit. Not mine. It came with a twist—a .5 layoff during a crucial network transition. This period unexpectedly became my proving ground. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗱: 𝗨𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: The transition period allowed my new manager to see my value beyond the layoff letter. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: My diverse skill set, honed through continuous learning, showcased my adaptability. This rare layoff scenario taught me a vital lesson: being laid off doesn't reflect your worth. It's often about timing and fit. It underscored the importance of having a solid skill set for backup. After two days at #HandshakeAccess, the leading event for early career education and recruiting, I'm feeling inspired and energized about developing the next generation of leaders. A lot of product managers are actually extremely qualified for program and product marketing roles, but they never go after it because they don’t feel like they are qualified. When was the last time you worked for a boss that was qualified to do their job? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Stop doubting yourself. You are more qualified than you can possibly believe and that’s what hurts me the most, seeing all these rockstars everything pass up on opportunities they could be landing. Stop degrading yourself. You are already more than enough and anything you don’t know you can and will learn JUST LIKE YOU always have. Keep telling yourself that you’re unqualified is the most surefire way of keeping yourself paycheck to paycheck. Get the job first and figure it out later.
