So This is Fascinating and I am very pleased. This week I posted that we needed responsibility to come back into programmatic. Because otherwise everyone blames others and we end up with a polluted ecosystem (fraud, bad content, MFA, hate etc). I have been talking about this in different ways for years. We need some level of walls to keep out the bad actors. We need some level of responsibility to maintain standards. Its clear that TTD and Jeff Green agree. This is at the nub of the push to the premium internet. With TTD taking some level of responsibility for what happens on their platform. Its also worth saying that the easy option is to do nothing. Many platforms make millions out of poor content in the short term. We need more action like this for the long term. For thats the point. This is not altruistic but acting to secure the long term viability of the channel.

✅🖥️ AdExchanger (11/8): “Well, without breaking out new revenue metrics, The Trade Desk divulged some interesting tidbits about their business. For instance, while the company doesn’t disclose CTV revenue, CEO Jeff Green said CTV is now the largest media channel for TTD. CTV has flipped the equation on web display and mobile. Similarly, a year ago, Criteo finally reported retargeting revenue as less than half of its total. The Trade Desk is touting its long-held ambition to have more CTV than banner ads. Currently, video ads, which encompass CTV, are close to 50% of TTD’s overall business. Soon, TTD will be primarily a video ad buyer. “It’s hard not to be bullish about CTV when it’s both our largest channel and our fastest growing,” Green said. And while CTV and retail media have been staples of every Trade Desk quarterly report for years on end, Green also put the focus on a few new opportunities, now that CTV has matured into the business, not just a rhetorical goal. The other premium media channel for programmatic to unlock is live sports, Green said. “I expect over the coming years to see programmatic spot markets and sports become best friends,” Green said. Live sports are counterintuitive for programmatic advertising. Those spots tend to have a very high premium and go to sponsors, rather than an open auction. From my perspective, it seems as though adjusting media types does little to combat Ad fraud. Instead, what makes this problem so prevalent is the lack of accountability in the programmatic supply chain. Firms leaning into advertising without any sort of accountability measures are met with an impossible Catch-22 wherein spending more leads to less impact and spending less delivers the same. #AdTech #Innovation #AdFraud

The clean room future is no longer on the horizon – it’s here. Netflix is the latest titan to recognize the value of programmatic advertising with the announcement of its strategy to distribute unsold OTT/CTV ad space across several different providers. The Trade Desk, Google DV360, Magnite are cited as the next batch of providers. Up until now, CTV media buyers had to go through Microsoft Xandr DSP or book with Netflix publisher-direct. It reminds me of the moment when Lamar Advertising Company took the same bold step to ensure their unsold space was programmatically available in top notch, third party SSP platforms like Place Exchange and others. It’s a rite of passage. Expanding the surface area of buy-side and sell-side platforms unlocks massive revenue dollars, when done right. Some of the smartest people in the world of business work at Netflix. This is proof of that. Many hands make light work! Amazing week at Brandweek last week- Spending time with fellow marketers reminded me why I love media, experiences and brands so much. Had a fun chat with Nicole Parlapiano and Adam Grossman (and thank you Mark Stenberg!) about changes in the TV landscape- how/when fans view, how TV lives beyond the screen and what makes for an authentic and compelling ad experience in this new fragmented world. Key takeaways: being a TV fan today is both amazing and a lot of work. There are more opportunities to reach fans than ever before but it takes a lot more insight and planning to get it right. Attended the Marketing Vanguard dinner at Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's school and "lab" where we experienced his creative genius and how he thought about the fit of environment + structure + human was inspiring. Key Takeaway: the details matter- if you want your guests to sit, relax and get to know each other, keep the ceilings low! And learned more about the journeys of heritage brands including Crayola, Hilton and Wendy's (with amazing CMOs Victoria B. Lozano, Mark Weinstein, Lindsay Radkoski), all of which have become so much more than a product. They're experience brands with loyal fans for whom these brands are part of their identities (I pulled my Wendy's booklet out of my wallet as Lindsay was speaking, a roadtrip isn't a roadtrip without a stop at Wendy's for my family!) Key Takeaway: Brands that focus on who their fans are and what they care about beyond a transactional moment will thrive for (hundreds of) years!
