I'm reminded of a valuable life lesson learned during interactions in France: the importance of creating genuine connections in every interaction.    Whether it's ordering a café crème or coaching a client, the essence remains the same – it's about more than just the transaction.   Maintaining eye contact, initiating meaningful conversations, and truly connecting on a human level can transform an ordinary exchange into something extraordinary. Just as a Parisian waiter appreciates sincere engagement, so too do our coachees when they open up during a session.   As coaches of leaders, it's crucial to be fully present and attentive. Thrilled to dive into the enriching insights shared by Deborah Riegel and her colleagues in this captivating article in Harvard Business Review. Thank you, William Arruda, for sharing this – and many more great insights – during ICF BDS Advanced Live. 1) Defining Coaching: Coaching isn’t about dictating solutions; it's about empowering individuals to navigate their own paths. As the authors put it, "the coach brings the process, but the coaching goes where the client takes it." Bringing the process does not mean advising, consulting, or dictating—the client sets the agenda. Always! 2) Invest in Certification: I’m often asked if certification is required for coaches. While only 1 client has *ever* asked for my credentials, the authors’ advocacy for coaching certification truly resonates. Certification hones our skills, reinforces industry standards, and ultimately enriches our client interactions, making us more effective coaches. 3) Balancing Business and Coaching: Yes, "You will need to put more effort and hours into building your business than into coaching." It’s true. So, develop a clear strategy for building your business, put a solid plan in place, and stay committed to it. This approach ensures your coaching practice thrives. 💡Tip: AI is a great thought partner for how to develop a strategy custom to you and your niche. I just used AI to develop my comms strategy and project plan for the year. It is my hope that sharing this article ignites dialogue and fosters growth within our community. When the interviewer read the draft of this article back to me, I had tears in my eyes. ("𝘈 𝘣𝘪𝘵 𝘶𝘯𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭" - I thought, "𝘎𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳!") Seeing my journey captured so 𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗹𝘆 felt surreal - the highs, the lows, and everything in between. What a talent in writing! This story reflects all the unexpected turns and the resilience it took to keep moving forward. (Actually, it was impossible to capture ALL of them in one article). I've seen many people surprised by the talents others see in them—talents they've never recognized in themselves. How to make people listen to you ? First, make people feel heard When was the last time that someone truly listened to you? It may have been a friend or family member, a coach or a therapist. Take a few seconds now to remember a moment when you felt deeply heard.  What was the impact on you? How did it change your feelings and attitude towards the other person?  From my experience and that of my coachees, when someone really listens to us, it makes us more likely to listen to them. It also strengthens the bond between us. Making someone feel heard is the most powerful way I know to make others listen to you. First make them heard, then they listen. Inspired by a recent post from my friend, Charles-Louis de Maere today's share is of the most recent book that has dropped into my mailbox. "Coaching For Wellbeing", by Ana Paula Nacif. As I continue to deepen, and strengthen my coaching practice, I find myself getting ever more drawn to how we can live better lives as humans. And the role I can play in supporting you. We all know how important health and wellbeing is. So, why do so many people I talk to jeopardize it? Until I started to really dig into burnout I didn't realise quite how insidious it is. And how many of the people I know had suffered very serious episodes of burnout. What appears even more surprising is that we often know that we are trying to do too much. Working very long hours. Skipping lunch because we are "too busy". Not pausing and reflecting on how things are going for you. Not switching off. The body knows and the head will catch up. Eventually. Our health is more important than those emails you forgot to send. Our health is more important than that PowerPoint presentation you promised you would have done. Your health is more important than all those three meetings you have scheduled in your calendar at the same time. Resilience isn't about keeping going until you break It is about taking a break so you can keep going. The 𝗠𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗡 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘, celebrated on July 25, is a unique day created by the Mayans to account for the extra day in their 13 Moon Calendar. In 1992, José Argüelles, Ph.D., brought a contemporary spiritual component to this day, transforming it into an opportunity for deeper reflection and connection. This day now serves as a pause (and if you know my work, you know I am all about "the pause") for reflection, forgiveness, and renewal, existing outside the regular flow of time to provide space for introspection and resetting intentions before the Mayan new year, July 26. ☮️ In honor of this day, we might each consider how to be more mindful and thoughtful in our actions, words, and deeds, even amidst our differing social or political views. Reflecting on our shared experiences and challenges can help us find common ground. By taking '𝙖 𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚' to pause and celebrate this day, we remind ourselves of the potential for unity that lies within our shared humanity.
