“Lack of visibility is the enemy of revenue.” Joe Vitalone (Strategic Advisor, Extreme Networks) said this on a recent Clari webinar. And I couldn’t agree more. Without visibility, CROs and revenue leaders: - Miss critical deal insights that could help prevent slippage or loss. - Struggle to set accurate forecasts because they don’t have a full view of the pipeline. - Lose alignment as marketing, sales, and customer success aren’t operating from the same data. - Fail to spot revenue leaks early, allowing problems to grow unnoticed. Sales teams are at their best when they have a clear direction where they can run at full speed. This is all about conviction. When sellers have conviction, buyers have conviction. There's so much momentum in a sales process that you need to simplify every single decision. They don't have to follow the process every deal, but they have to be deciding "yes or no" on each step of the process. Make every choice as simple as possible, so they can read and react without losing momentum.

Your integrity is your most valuable strength, especially in sales and revenue generation. Success in these sectors is often measured by quota attainment and conversion rates. However, compromising your integrity to meet targets is never the answer. Building successful relationships in revenue generation relies heavily on trust. Once that trust is broken, whether internally or with clients, it is challenging to rebuild. Remember, self-confidence is rooted in staying true to yourself. People don’t realize what “closing skills” are in sales, and they’re not “is persuasive.” Reps with closing skills CONSISTENTLY know, can choreograph and advise on how the deal gets signed and returned. And their forecast accuracy reflects those skills.

Some people to consider tagging on your AE's best calls: ➡ Your Manager: Giving L2+ leaders visibility into how the AE expertly handled a specific section of a customer call. ➡ Enablement: Giving Enablement the opportunity to feature the AE's call or snippet in upcoming training sessions or within a Gong library. ➡ Product Marketing: Helping PMM iterate training materials and GTM collateral based on how AEs are presenting and positioning the product. ➡ Your Team: Opening an opportunity for peer recognition and facilitating knowledge sharing across the team. ➡ The Internal Exec Sponsor: In a Key/Strategic Account context. Everyone in your revenue org has a different view of what's going on. Learn how to leverage it: VPs: “We’re tracking behind on our Q3 revenue target. We need to increase our ACV by doubling down on Enterprise opportunities.” Sales Managers: “We’re tracking behind our Q3 revenue target. We don’t have enough opportunities to double down on. We need to increase our outbound activity to drive pipeline.” Account Executives: “I’m behind on my Q3 target. Building more pipeline isn’t going to help me this quarter. I need to close at least 50% of my open opportunities to get back on track (even though my average is 25%).” Same Problem. 3 Completely Different Approaches. If you work in revenue enablement, you have the unique opportunity to be a bridge between team members at every level. Here’s what that sounds like… To VP’s: “If we want to increase our team’s ACV by moving up market, we’ll need to audit how we qualify opportunities and make sure we’re getting the right stakeholders involved in discovery. Do you have time to collaborate on a new rubric for our SDR’s and AE’s to qualify champions? I’d expect this to take about 3 months before we start seeing consistent results. Is there any opportunity to focus on mid-market win rate in the meantime?” [Once approved, go to your sales managers] To Sales Managers: “I understand we need more activity, but until our reps are identifying the right people to get on a call, it’s going to be wasted effort. Leadership is working on a new qualification framework for next quarter, but in the meantime, you can still hit your target by focusing on moving more of your existing pipeline in S2 & S3 into later stages in the sales cycle. What are some high-value deals that you feel are stuck right now?” [Then, go to your reps] To Sellers: “Your managers have identified some deals that are stuck in the early stages of the sales cycle. In the past, I’ve noticed you tend to use discounts as a lever to push deals through faster. How would you go about advancing these deals if you weren’t able to discount them at all?” By taking the time to listen to different perspectives from across the org, Enablement becomes a force multiplier that get’s everyone moving towards the same goal.

Measuring the success of your salespeople involves more than just tracking their ability to hit quotas. To truly evaluate their effectiveness and contribution to the company's growth, you need to look a several key areas: Growth in Inherited Accounts: A key indicator of a salesperson's effectiveness is how they manage and grow the accounts they inherit. Have they been able to increase the volume of business with these clients, or have they successfully raised prices without losing the account? Both scenarios reflect a deep understanding of the customer’s needs and the value they see in your offering. If a salesperson is merely maintaining the status quo without any growth in these areas, it might be a red flag that they are not fully leveraging existing relationships. New Account Acquisition: The ability to bring in new business is crucial. How many new accounts has each salesperson added to the portfolio? This metric demonstrates their ability to open doors, create new opportunities, and contribute to the company’s expansion. If a salesperson is struggling to add new accounts, it could indicate that they are not proactive enough in prospecting or that they lack the necessary skills to close new business. Consistency and Profitability: It's not enough to simply add accounts; those accounts must also be profitable and consistent contributors to the company’s revenue. Evaluate whether their customers are consistently profitable month over month and quarter over quarter. If, after analyzing these areas, a salesperson is not showing the desired growth in inherited accounts, failing to acquire new accounts, or their accounts are not consistently profitable, it may be time to have a tough conversation. In some cases, this might mean providing additional training or resources to help them improve. However, if there's no improvement over time, it might be necessary to consider terminating their employment. While this is never an easy decision, it’s essential to ensure that your sales team is aligned with the company’s goals and is actively contributing to its success. By focusing on these comprehensive metrics, you can more accurately assess the true impact of each salesperson and make informed decisions about the future of your sales team.

1 proven way to speed up a sales cycle: Have a client pitch your prospect 🤯 Why does this work? 1) Trust. They trust their peers, not you. Get over it. You’ll build this over years as a salesperson, not on a 🪩 call. 2) Relevance. They’ll hear WHY your client bought which will resonate way more than what you have to say. How do you execute this? Find the places where your ICP/personas go to learn and exchange ideas. Be there. Sponsor. Present. Give. The most valuable “client-pitchers” in my career uncovered these groups, conferences, and think tanks themselves. Figure out a way to host one or more of these. As a sales leader in 2024, it’s one of the bright spots I’m seeing in outbound for strategic enterprise. Its also the #1 reason most of the business closed at Salesforce happens at #dreamforce 🤔

How can sales leaders get their team into flow? Here are 3 questions to help you figure this out: 1. As a sales leader, are you actively looking for areas of friction in the daily experience of your sellers. 2. Once those areas of friction are identified, are you taking steps to address these areas and minimize the friction? 3. Are you providing maximum opportunity for your sellers to spend time doing what you hired them to do?  In other words, do your sellers have the time and space available in their day/week to focus their energy on the priorities that matter? Additionally, if you hired the right person, there are 3 things that will make them come alive: 1. Establishing credibility 2. Nurturing trust 3. Building relationships and ultimately delivering value to their clients. This is an interesting discussion. Leslie is referencing this for sales, but it’s a similar conversation in Talent Acquisition orgs that have a dedicated sourcing and recruiting function. Do you round robin the leads from sourcing to recruiters or do you tailor the leads?
