SRE merges software engineering and IT operations to build scalable, reliable systems and deliver high-quality service. Starting at Google, SRE focuses on automation, monitoring, and error budgeting to facilitate operational burdens and improve system resilience. Its importance has grown as organizations increasingly rely on dependable systems. Uplimit and Google created the 𝐒𝐑𝐄 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐞 course to establish a strong foundation in Site Reliability Engineering. Led by Salim Virji, a seasoned SRE professional with over 20 years of experience at Google, the course focuses on critical aspects of SRE, including system reliability, incident management, and service deployment. It combines live sessions, cohort-based learning, and an AI-driven environment where participants benefit from mentorship and masterclasses and gain practical SRE skills. In the first week, the course introduces monitoring and alerting practices, focusing on the "four golden signals" of performance: latency, traffic, errors, and saturation. Students work on a case study involving UpCommerce, an e-commerce platform, where they develop a service level objective (SLO) document and provide error budget recommendations to improve service reliability. The second week focuses on designing reliable systems. Participants learn about reliability principles, conduct postmortems, and manage software releases with automated builds and canary deployments. Using Kubernetes, they practice improving UpCommerce's deployment stability and system reliability through hands-on projects. The course focuses on practical projects and mentorship. It provides an excellent opportunity to learn SRE principles.
