AdAttributionKit: Unpacking Apple’s new ad attribution framework AAK unifies Apple’s various advertising attribution frameworks under a single umbrella product name and extends SKAdNetwork in meaningful ways, including with support for re-engagement and alternative app marketplaces. These are substantive improvements. But impediments to adoption remain: IP-based attribution is still widely viewed as a suitable alternative to Apple’s native iOS attribution framework, meaning that platform tools like Conversion APIs will take adoption priority.

Note I sent to our users this morning, but maybe interesting for some of you to read: We are at a turning point in our sector - the digital advertising frenzy is losing steam. I say this as someone who has been there since pretty much the beginning, including working to build ad products in house at FANG. There's a growing realization that our industry's obsession with all things digital has been at the very least overhyped. Maybe it’s time we rethink how we connect with consumers in more meaningful ways once again.   Advertising veteran and luminary I look up to Rory Sutherland once pointed out that brands are sacrificing creativity in favor of digital metrics. His message was simple: marketing should focus on storytelling and building relationships, not just churning out content for the sake of engagement, reaching audiences of varying quality - if real humans at all.   The rise of ad-blocking software speaks volumes here. Nearly 30% of consumers now actively avoid digital ads, frustrated by their intrusive nature. The takeaway is clear: people don’t really want ads online. This is where out-of-home (OOH) advertising shines— it’s both unskippable and non-intrusive, meeting audiences in the real world where their attention is undivided. Screens at a desirable distance, not interrupting your group chat or daily news.   Anyway, how many digital campaigns can you actually remember that stand out in the last decade? It’s a tough question, I struggle to think of many - but when you think of out-of-home campaigns, it’s clear they have the power to create memorable moments. I just flew into Seattle and can shut my eyes and recall the Dell AI campaign I saw at the Austin airport yesterday. But I couldn't tell you the social media ads I scrolled past 5 minutes ago before writing this note. Here are a few things that stuck out to me: - Google is serious about using AI across all its business and consumer products. - Gemini -- Has multimodality (text, video, photo, voice) and long context. -- Google is using it across all their products so you can be confident using it in yours. -- Gemini 1.5 Pro is a serious completion to GPT-4o and other LLMs. -- You can build solutions that take in a lot of data (text, audio, video, images). -- They are building a lot of infrastructure and tools for developers. - Gem Agents -- Agents are a big part of use cases across Google products. -- An agent could be created to do specific tasks or a specific type of assistant. - Google Search + AI Overviews -- Coming to all users. -- Overviews specifically provide what you searched for, so I worry that people won't need to click over to your website to get what they need. --- How will this impact PPC? -- This same search experience is added to all parts of Google products like Gmail, Workspaces, and YouTube. -- AI in search can improve your search, plan, and reason to get the info you need. Google's new approach: yet to be defined “informed choice” instead of cookie deprecation.  I have a suggestion. We Almost Nailed This Back in '99: Learnings from P3P Reflecting on Google's recent decision to postpone third-party cookie deprecation, I can't help but think: we've been here before. Back in 1999, I was part of a team working on the Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P) project, a major W3C standards effort aimed at creating machine-readable privacy policies for the web. P3P was ahead of its time. We envisioned a world where browsers could automatically read and evaluate website privacy policies, giving users more control over their data. This idea was notably supported by Internet Explorer, the dominant browser at the time. However, P3P had a fatal flaw: trust. Anyone could claim anything in their P3P policy, and there was no way to verify it. I pushed hard for authenticated compact headers, but digital signature standards weren't ready yet. Without this crucial piece, P3P eventually fell by the wayside. Similar Challenges Being Faced Today Fast forward to today, and we're facing similar challenges. Google's Privacy Sandbox and the broader industry efforts to replace third-party cookies are grappling with the same fundamental issues: How do we balance personalization with privacy? How do we ensure that privacy statements are trustworthy and enforceable? Revisiting P3P concepts could provide valuable insights for our current privacy challenges. Imagine privacy policies that are not just machine-readable but also cryptographically signed and verified by responsible authorities. In this world, browsers can enforce these policies automatically, and users have granular control over their data without reading through pages of legalese. They can rely on recommended preferences from trusted authorities like the AARP or Consumers Union. We now have regulations, blockchain technology, advanced cryptography, and a much more sophisticated understanding of online privacy. But the core principles of P3P – transparency, user control, and machine-readability – are still relevant. What’s Next? What’s Possible? We already have added labels for cookies with the HttpOnly, SameSite, and Partitioned attributes. My suggestion is to make this more useful with a digitally signed “nutrition label” detailing how the cookie will be used. Google's decision gives us a chance to get this right. Let's not waste it by reinventing the wheel. Instead, let's learn from the successes and failures of P3P and other privacy initiatives. Browser-arbitrated privacy controls can work with robust mechanisms for verification and enforcement. It won't be easy, but it's necessary if we want to preserve a vibrant open web. The future of online privacy isn't just about getting rid of cookies – it's about creating a new paradigm for data transparency and control. And who knows?
