AWS is quietly killing off services CodeCommit was launched in 2015 to let users host Git repos. Critics bewail communication issues, supporters welcome dead wood-cutting, as CodeCommit, CloudSearch and several other services stop accepting new users. On July 25, AWS published a blog with guidance on how to migrate to an alternative Git provider service like Microsoft’s GitHub, or GitLab. Is the era of specialized products coming to an end? We are witnessing a trend where products initially focused on one area are now expanding across their respective value chains, outpacing their competitors. This shift highlights the critical importance of an innovation mindset. For instance, platforms like Github and GitLab have evolved from mere code repositories to comprehensive CI/CD platforms with integrated security features. Similarly, Atlassian recent keynote demonstrated their innovative approach; with products like Jira Service Management that have connection to entire Atlassian suite of products. Confluence for whiteboarding and Compass for software development lifecycle management, they are positioning themselves as a one-stop shop from ideation to customer interaction, moving beyond just being known for Jira.
