After attending a recent Summit where I felt the industry of #startups and #vc has become too generalist and differentation is hard to find, I now know to include Danta Fund as (per the article below) a " Non-Consensus Alpha". 💪 It sounds pretentious, yes, but the description fits sooo well. Danta Fund is a specialized #agtech fund that provides #smartmoney to our founders. A mistake a lot of us make is assuming that for breakthrough innovation, we need to find that one good idea. But if Jeremy Utley is to be believed, more ideas lead to better outcomes. Utley, Director of Executive Education at the Stanford d.school and co-author with Perry Klebahn of Ideaflow: The Only Business Metric That Matters, challenges the common perception that one good idea is the key to success. He explains why. RB: You define the idea as a “connection”. Why? JU: My study of the underlying neuroscience has led me to realize that an idea is a bridge between two things already in your mind. The conventional view of ideas as coming from nowhere or being built from nothing lacks practicality and is not helpful. When you hold onto such thinking, you're essentially searching for something to materialize from nothing – this is not beneficial in terms of operating... RB: How can we successfully manage the inputs we receive from outside to maximize the impact we achieve? Inputs are important. Many people who aspire to lead a creative life or fail to recognize the value of that tend to focus solely on problem-solving. When you think about that, you're often concerned with the output. But what's the answer? The brain's just like anything else. When we consider the outputs of our thinking, we realize that they depend on the inputs we receive. Therefore, we call this kind of thoughtfulness about a deliberate pursuit of input inspiration. Unlike those of us from corporate environments, that is a design word that means something. At a time of such political uncertainty, an urgent reminder that climate-tech is a matter of national security and industrial development strategy. Without any reference to carbon or climate-change, the energy transition is a race the US and the west cannot afford to lose. Technology transitions fuel the economic and military power that shape geopolitics and the rise and fall of empires. Think: Caravel ship design and new navigation tools that underpinned Portuguese conquests of Africa and the Americas. The 1st industrial revolution fueling the rail roads, manufacturing that built the British empire. Then the US-lead second industrial revolution with oil, cars, and the economic boom associated with these. Ascendent after WWI, the US eclipsed Britain and Europe as in WWII on the back of its economic might and technology leadership. But the best analogy for the critical strategic, economic and technological importance of winning the clean energy race is microprocessor chips. In the 1950s through 70s, America’s ingenuity and capital markets seeded these technologies that changed everything, not just computers, the internet communications, but smart bombs, intelligence, satellites in the midst of the cold war. Japan and Korea’s economic miracles were tied directly to economic development policies focusing on these industries. And today, China’s claims on Taiwan are more about controlling TSMC’s chip manufacturing technology than national identity. Lets be clear. Clean energy technology is the next wave of technology that will shape this century and those that win this tech will control the economic and geopolitical order of the future. China saw this 20 years ago and has invested billions to ensure it wins the race. Today, China controls ~75% of global battery manufacturing capacity, 80 % of solar panel capacity, 58% of EVs manufactured, and 60% of the critical minerals that feed these industries. Beyond economic power, climate-technologies will also decide the future of hot and cold conflict. Think: grid resilient military bases powered by distributed energy at a time of cyber attacks on the grid.  Electric tactical vehicles with no noise signature. Battlefield batteries replacing highly exposed fuel supply chains. This isn’t speculation, this is straight from the US militaries climate-change strategy. China understands that clean energy is the inevitable future, and he who captures this prize wins the 21st century. They are cheaper, easier to deploy, with exponentially falling costs, and myriad use-case superiorities that make the obsolescence of fossil fuels inevitable. Today, 90% of all new generation capacity being added globally is renewable. We reached peak ICE vehicle in 2017. At a time when climate has become a partisan political issue, lets reframe this topic as the urgent matter of global security it is. The future of clean energy is not open to debate. But who wins this prize and, with it, the next century, is up to us.

With electricity demand rising for the first time in decades on the back of exponentially growing demands for AI data center workloads, the reflexive response has been to pose a false choice: cede our global advantage in AI and innovation, or cede our climate goals. The reality is that the opposite is true: we can't win the AI race without developing and deploying, at unprecedented speed and scale, novel, power-dense, clean energy resources, and taking advantage of the the critical innovation feedback loops at the convergence of these two fields. Interesting post, Frank Rotman . I'd argue that rather than try to use your markups as traction for raising funds 2, 3 and 4 , emerging managers should consider helping their startups get earlier liquidity via suggesting listing on growth exchanges like the Toronto Stock Exchange, the LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) or the ASX . DPI > IRR or TVPI when it comes to LPs. A VC that returns >2x in 7 years to LPs is going to have a much easier time raising the next fund than a fund with an IRR or TVPI of whatever. The entire vc industry has drank the kool aid that companies should be doing >$300m in ARR before listing. The LP community needs / wants liquidity before the 12 to 14 years its currently taking to IPO in the US, however. Startups can list on the above exchanges doing $20m in revenue with 30% YoY growth, they don't have to deal with Sarb Ox compliance and follow on raises are orders of magnitude easier for a listed company. Why? There's so many more public market investors than private market investors. What if altering our investment strategies could substantially boost our fight against climate change? The recent State of Finance for Nature report by the UN Environment Programme reveals a glaring imbalance: while almost $7 trillion annually supports activities harmful to our planet, a mere $200 billion goes towards nature-based solutions (NBS). This disparity is concerning and demands urgent action. Financial Overview: 🏗️ Nature-negative investments: Each year, nearly $7 trillion fuels activities that degrade our environment. 🌲 Nature-positive investments: Conversely, only about $200 billion is directed toward initiatives that can stabilize our climate and enhance ecosystem health. Significance of This Imbalance: 💰 Economic Impact: Half of the global GDP depends heavily on nature, highlighting the extensive economic risks of environmental neglect. 🌋 Rising Disaster Costs: Natural disasters, increasingly frequent due to ecosystem degradation, caused $280 billion in damages in a single year. 🌾 Threats to Food Security: The decline in pollinators could severely disrupt global food production, with potential economic impacts reaching hundreds of billions. Strategies for Change: 1️⃣ Investment Repurposing: It’s critical to shift substantial funds from destructive to regenerative projects. 2️⃣ Investment Increase: Meeting key global targets like the Rio Convention requires tripling current NBS funding by 2030. 🏦 Role of Governments and Private Sector: Governments currently lead with 82% of NBS funding, but private sector involvement remains limited. Is SF Climate Week banter a good barometer of the macro climate tech investment mood? Key nuggets to ponder: 💰💰💰 Climate solutions (like most science/engineering and hardware based deep tech) are capital intensive. They require an "all of the above", creative financing approach to obtain the capital needed to scale (from CVCs, government, public-private partnerships, green banks, debt financing...). 🤖 AI - Everything, Everywhere (all at once). As in most sectors, AI is white hot. It can be a key component of climate solutions, but also a demand accelerant ⏩ More AI = ↗ compute and power demand ⚡= ↗ need for energy storage and grid enhancing solutions 🔋. 🏛 🤵 Political Angst. Real worry that a new administration will cut or impede climate tech catalyzing funding (e.g., DOE funding from IRA). #climatetech #climateweek

Beyond Carbon Dioxide: The rumble of jet engines and the contrails etched across the sky have become synonymous with a connected world.However, the #aviation industry faces a critical challenge on its path to #carbon #neutrality – its impact extends beyond just carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. While CO2 reduction remains a top priority, achieving true sustainability requires addressing a wider range of environmental concerns. Undoubtedly, CO2 emissions from burning #jet #fuel are a major contributor to #climate change.However, the story doesn't end there. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by jet engines pose a significant threat to air quality,particularly at high altitudes, where they contribute to smog formation. Imagine airplanes not just releasing heat-trapping CO2, but also spewing NOx that harms air quality in the very skies they navigate. Furthermore, the water vapor released by jet engines isn't simply harmless condensation. These emissions can form persistent #contrails, and contribute to the formation of high-altitude #cirrus clouds. These clouds, unlike their natural counterparts, trap heat more effectively, amplifying the overall warming effect. Picture contrails morphing into heat-trapping blankets in the sky, further exacerbating the problem they were born from. The path to carbon neutrality for aviation demands a holistic approach. By addressing all aspects of the industry's environmental #impact, from CO2 to NOx emissions and contrail formation, a truly sustainable future is achievable. My takeaways: - Investor competition is heating up 🔥 and accelerating the trend of even more specialized climate verticals and "boutique" fund models. - System change is gaining momentum and funds focus on deep structural industrial shifts. - Frameworks, manuals, and common language for scaling climate tech are gradually becoming standardized thanks to initiatives such as The Climate Brick. - Nature has A/B tested climate solutions for millions of years, and there is no reason to compete with nature-based solutions... - AI will fuel lean VC operations, efficient deal flows, analysis, reporting, and level up emerging managers making the industry even more scalable.
