Reflecting on the insights gained from the 12th Annual Global Supply Chain Excellence Summit, USC Marshall School of Business I was struck by some key takeaways that underscore the critical challenges and opportunities in our industry. During a fascinating discussion with two graduate students, we explored the realities of forecasting accuracy. Even with the most advanced tools available, the best-case scenario achieves an 86% accuracy rate, while more typical outcomes hover between 68% and 73%. This conversation took place against the backdrop of an exciting new marketplace being developed to bridge the gap between sourcing products overseas in China and India, enabling entrepreneurs to establish the right manufacturing relationships without the need to travel. However, the challenge that resonated most was the difficulty of adapting supply chain planning. Several e-commerce professionals shared their experiences, noting that it often takes 1-2 years to make necessary adjustments—a timeframe that simply doesn’t align with the fast-paced demands of today’s business environment. This conversation made it clear that the need for agility in the supply chain is more pressing than ever. The insights shared during the summit also emphasized the shifting priorities within the supply chain, particularly the move from a single bottom line focused solely on profit to a triple bottom line that includes people, planet, and profit. This multidimensional mindset is critical for achieving sustainability and resiliency in supply chain management. Key trends in global supply chain management were also highlighted, including onshoring, digital transformation, and the growing importance of transparency and visibility. Organizational agility and adherence to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles are becoming increasingly vital as companies navigate the future. These discussions reinforced the realization that the solutions we are developing at KINIMATIC with WareView are perfectly aligned with these challenges. Our focus on providing an end-to-end supply chain solution that is agile and allows for quicker decision-making and optimization resonates with the needs of businesses today. The freight market is rapidly changing and DTS Advance Logistics understands that to have an efficient and effective supply chain you must be up to date on the current market trends. For this reason, our team has created a brief snapshot of what was in this month's newsletter. 💡Canadian West Coast Ports are experiencing the following delays, the Vancouver Port has an average delay of 8 days while Prince Rupert is experiencing an average delay of 10 days. 💡A tentative agreement has ended the U.S. port strike, but ongoing congestion and unresolved issues like automation continue to cause significant delays. 💡As negotiations continue, the potential for further labor disruptions remains, but industry stakeholders are adapting to the evolving situation with increased resilience. 💡Hurricane Milton, a Category 5 storm, has caused significant disruptions in Florida's transportation and freight markets, closing key ports and straining supply chains already impacted by recent labor strikes. 💡China has tightened hazardous cargo regulations at Ningbo port, requiring earlier submission of declarations to prevent shipment delays, following recent ship fire incidents caused by improperly declared dangerous goods. 💡Container freight rates from Asia continue to decline despite the resumption of U.S. port operations post-strike, with carriers managing congestion through blanked sailings and demand waning after the peak season. 💡The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will officially launch the CARM system on October 21, 2024, following a cutover period from October 4-21, during which legacy systems will be retired, and access to the CARM Client Portal will be unavailable. Penalties and interest on late payments will be suspended for 90 days after launch, though overdue accounts may still face collection measures. 💡TPEB ocean freight rates have stabilized post-strike, with capacity exceeding demand and no space shortages expected as carriers cancel rate hikes and surcharges, especially on U.S. East Coast routes. 💡In September, global freight demand and rates surged ahead of the peak season, with chargeable weight up +2% WoW and +10% YoY, and global spot rates rising +4% WoW and +20% YoY, driven by strong recoveries in key regions. Shippers ICYMI… postal consolidation may be at a turning point. Louis DeJoy, Postmaster General, sent this letter to parcel consolidators: "We no longer intend to provide discounted rates through NSAs that incent parties to aggregate mail volume from multiple shippers, and bring such volume directly to the destination delivery unit"... "We therefore wish to begin negotiations on modifying your Parcel Select contract to remove Destination Delivery Unit (DDU) pricing..." "... because we do not consider the entry of packages presorted to the 5-digit level at our plants to be consistent with processing economies, for most of the nation we no longer intend to offer differentiated DSCF rates based on whether volume is presorted to the 5-Digit ZIP Code..." "I want these discussions to move forward in an expeditious fashion and to conclude with an executed written amendment within 45 days." Make sure you aren’t left holding your packages.

What consumers need to know about tariffs is that FreightWaves seems bent on advancing an incorrect narrative that tariffs won't increase consumer prices (https://lnkd.in/gwQdw4RK). Here are some flaws with this article posted yesterday: •Amiti et al. (2019; Journal of Economic Perspectives https://lnkd.in/gdGZGUE5) report, "In the wake of this increase in trade protection [following the Trump Tariffs], the United States experienced substantial increases in the prices of intermediates and final goods, dramatic changes to its supply-chain network, reductions in availability of imported varieties, and the complete pass-through of the tariffs into domestic prices of imported goods." Complete pass-through = consumers paid higher prices because we didn't see cost of imported goods from China decline. Simple economics here. •As noted in the quote above from Amiti et al. (2019), we will see a reduction in the variety of goods that are imported under tariffs. That is a negative for consumer welfare, as it reduces choice. •There is no evidence that tariffs resulted in an increase in manufacturing employment in industries that received tariff protection (https://lnkd.in/gVUDYjrU), and industries targeted for retaliation shed payrolls. I'm sorry folks, jobs lost to offshoring are gone forever. Let's stop living in the past and wanting to assemble small electronic appliances and apparel in the U.S. again. •Tariffs on imported intermediate inputs used by U.S. manufacturers hurt the largest, most productive, highest wage paying U.S. manufacturers (https://lnkd.in/gjYznBsx; https://lnkd.in/gxr7PiFB) and were found to reduce export growth (https://lnkd.in/gzXUjgGJ). Flying high on the hog as they say as LGB/LA Ports enjoy the diversion to USWC Ports for import cargo, but bad news for export cargo. Lets look at the preliminary numbers as reported by PMSA. LGB-Increase of 40.4% imports from 2019 Aug pre-pandemic numbers ** exports down 16.3% from August 2019. LA-Increase of 16.4% imports from 2019 Aug pre-pandemic numbers ** down 16.8% from August 2019 OAK-Decrease14.9% imports from 2023 Aug numbers ** 59,362 outbound loads that departed from the port Jul 2024 were the fewest in any August in this century. SEA/TAC- Increase 10.1% imports from 2019 Aug pre-pandemic numbers YTD container moves through SEA/TAC ports (2,137,902) represented 16.6% decline from the same period in 2019

The extension of the Master Contract until early 2025 provides a stable framework for these ongoing discussions, ensuring labor stability in the short term. However, the tentative agreement sets the January 15, 2025 deadline just before Chinese New Year, a crucial period for shipping, raising concerns that any potential disruption could have widespread consequences if no agreement is reached.
