Transitioning into a new leadership role, how do you establish trust with your team members effectively?
We've all survived that new leader dance: You pretend not to see their eye rolls. They pretend they're SO excited about “fresh perspectives.” LinkedIn stalking each other under the table in full sus mode. Acknowledge + Calibrate: “Hey team - we're all experts here. You at this, me at mine. You've got wisdom I need. I've got questions that might be useful. And yes, it is strange new different fun.” Just admit the elephant into the room. It's awkward. Get Animated. Energetic. Gather. What patterns are you seeing that everyone ignores? Which problems keep you up at night? Fresh eyes needed? Who brings the best snacks? (Critical intel. And you bring them!) Trust isn't built in careful moments. Create safety. Celebrate curiosity.

You're faced with tough questions during an impromptu speech. How will you handle them?
I think we’re missing what defines a question as “tough,” because the answer depends on the challenge: 1. Information Gap: Is it tough because you don’t know the answer? Acknowledge the gap honestly, express curiosity, and commit to following up with accuracy. 2. Transparency Limits: Is it tough because you know but can’t share the answer? Respect boundaries with empathy, balancing discretion with clarity. 3. Confrontational Tone: Is the delivery aggressive or divisive? Stay grounded, reframe the question to foster dialogue, and respond intentionally. Tough questions test composure, adaptability, and connection. Some demand immediate tact; others benefit from thoughtful follow-up. Leadership lies in navigating with confidence and care.

Negative feedback is flooding your social media. How do you stay authentic and professional?
I was recently watching a video, and I sincerely wish I could recall the creator’s name but I took their idea and adopted it immediately. A long and evaluative pause with eye contact in person. But the response is… “This does not meet my expectation level for a response”. It. is. delightful.

Your team needs to take on more responsibility. How can you empower them without micromanaging?
1️⃣ Lead with curiosity, not control: Ask open-ended questions like, “What’s the next step you see?” or “What’s your plan for this?” This builds trust and invites ownership. 2️⃣ Focus on outcomes, not perfection: Instead of checking every detail, set clear goals and give autonomy to decide how to get there. For example, say: “Let’s align on the big picture—how you achieve it is up to you.” 3️⃣ Create a safe space for mistakes: Remind them that errors are opportunities to learn. Shift the language to noticing: “What worked? What could we do differently next time?” 4️⃣ Celebrate progress, not just results: Recognize effort and improvement to build confidence. Say: “I see how much effort you’ve put into this—it’s making a difference.”
