“I had the opportunity to work with Lily for several years at Dun & Bradstreet. Throughout that time, Lily proved herself to be an insightful and responsible attorney who gained the trust of fellow team members, including those at the senior leadership level. More than that, Lily has stood out as the glue of any team she is on. Her sunny and supportive mindset is a great benefit to everyone she works with.”

How can you turn your strengths into a competitive edge?
This strategy will help you be more realistic with the goals you set, too. If you say your goal is to get X number of customers by the end of the year, have a clear strategy for how to do that and a clear understanding of how your strengths play into that strategy. This will also help you understand where you need help. Perhaps you’re great at the sales pitch but struggle to put a deck together that resonates with your spoken presentation. You can find someone to help make your written word align with the spoken word and will see better results where you consider the role your strengths play in the goals you set.

How can you turn your strengths into a competitive edge?
It can be so challenging to be faced with an empty page and be expected to write out your strengths, so it can help to take some pressure off of yourself here. Instead of framing the question as “what are my strengths?”, try instead, “what are the moments in my life and in my career where I have truly felt ‘in the zone’?” Maybe you were flying high after giving a presentation (public speaking skills) or you find it really natural to connect with others (networking). Spend some time with this list, even come back to it over the course of a couple of days, and turn those stories into strengths (ex: public speaking skills, networking). People connect to stories, and your brain will more easily find your competitive edge through memories.
