“Reed Smith is expanding its Innovation Lab and Intelligence Center of Excellence. Firm CINO David Cunningham said the venture involves new hires, outside-the-box thinking and fewer inter-departmental communication gaps.” Good discussion of the big picture challenges that BigLaw law firm innovation officers face. One of several “money quotes:” “What I’ve learned is that an innovation officer just does [knowledge management] and generative AI and stays in that lane. That’s a lot to do. But, when I talk to [other firms’ innovation officers] about how they are innovating the marketing processes and onboarding and client-relationships—most of them say that’s not [their] job. [A] few of them have tried to go to Marketing and say [they] want to do more, but they get pushed back with that’s not your area.’ ” https://lnkd.in/e96T6wzB #legaltechnology David Cunningham

Reed Smith's Innovation Lab is expanding to incorporate new technologies like generative artificial intelligence. The lab is creating a comprehensive data environment within the law firm to utilise these technologies fully. This includes hiring new staff and introducing a Director of Change Leadership role to focus on change management. To achieve this, the Innovation Lab will work with Reed Smith's Intelligence Center of Excellence (COE), which brings together various departments such as Human Resources, IT, and Marketing. The lab aims to create a playbook outlining how to work together and then collaborate with these teams to deliver services. This expansion required Reed Smith to install or replace many systems and processes, allowing the firm to leverage now the data it has collected. By modernising the legal industry, Reed Smith aims to unite various business units and enhance the overall business model. However, there are still challenges in convincing other law firms to embrace innovation and modernisation.
