L3Harris Prototype Demos Cutting-Edge Capabilities for Autonomous Air Defense L3Harris’ Agile Development Group has been iteratively developing a robotic based, highly mobile, short range air defense capability that meets today’s mission needs and is inherently designed to adapt to tomorrow’s threats quickly and economically. The prototype system participated in this year's Project Convergence Capstone 4 (PC-C4) field experiment and seamlessly integrated advanced long-range surveillance and electronic attack (EA) capabilities onto a fully autonomous combat vehicle, enhancing ground-based air defense with beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) operations. The team adapted BLOS technology to an additional platform while at the event, demonstrating their ability to respond to emerging robotic system demands. PC-C4 is a series of exercises, experiments, and events to identify and refine strategies essential for transforming the U.S. Army and securing their war-winning readiness. L3Harris is committed to delivering cutting-edge solutions to the battlefield, effectively balancing the enhancement of capabilities with the minimization of risks to our warfighters. “Our team’s relentless drive to adapt and innovate is what ultimately drove our success with these prototypes,” said Jennifer Lewis, President, Airborne Combat Systems, L3Harris. “Thanks to their tireless efforts, we’re coming away with valuable insights that will drive further improvements, strategic decisions, and ultimately, powerful new capabilities to the warfighter.”

Raytheon and our USG partners completed the initial Common Sensor Payload (CSP) TLA engineering test flight at Dugway Proving Grounds on May 9, 2024. The CSP TLA’s enhanced technology will include a target location accuracy capability that will deliver precise, near-real time data to commanders – bolstering survivability and reducing the sensor-to-shooter process from minutes to seconds for Coordinate Seeking Weapons (CSWs). Successful Test Flight Objectives: · Initial Target Location Accuracy Data Verification · Gray Eagle Regression Test Checks · Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) Targeting Camera Evaluation · Laser Spot Characterization Data with Updated Laser Range Designator (LRD) Evaluation Production systems are expected to begin delivery in June 2025. BAE Systems will deliver and integrate next-generation active control sidesticks on JetZero’s new blended-wing body aircraft, which is set to accelerate the path to a sustainable future in aviation. Active control sidesticks give immediate and intuitive feedback directly into the pilot’s hands, which enables them to safely make use of the aircraft’s full flight envelope. Another significant benefit of this technology is the ability to link the controls electronically from pilot to pilot across the cockpit. This link enables both pilots to feel the forces and see the movement generated by the other. Active control sticks also require less complexity, weight, and volume than mechanically linked control sticks.

The Department of Defense is seeking efficient propulsion systems to enhance mission capability across commercial, civil and national security applications. Modern spacecraft use propulsion technologies that require finite liquid or gaseous chemical propellants. Since these propellants are limited, they are conserved for more critical applications such as station-keeping and collision avoidance. Proposed electrospray propulsion technologies should feature high specific impulse to enable a spacecraft to maneuver freely without the need to conserve fuel.

VISTA is a key enabler for the ACE program, allowing Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) performers to try out new behaviors and capabilities "on the fly"... literally while flying crazy fast. The press has picked up the story of autonomous AI vs human dog fights, but it is so much more than that. The program is also showing the DoD a faster way to push capabilities out to the warfighter. By providing a fast way to try things out and get feedback from the warfighter, there is potential to accelerate the acquisition process from years to months... to minutes and seconds. If you think I'm exaggerating the impact, consider that PhysicsAI, EpiSci, and #ShieldAI loaded new behaviors into a jet while it was flying and then tested those behaviors in a dog fight against a human-controlled fighter F-16. Imagine if new AI derived capabilities could be uploaded using an "app-store" model? Sound far fetched? In Ukraine, warfighters are iterating on an hour by hour basis to adapt to changing situations and enemy tactics. Clearly, I’m behind schedule today and there’s a lot to dissect in the news. First, the House Appropriations Committee did its committee markup on the Defense Appropriations bill this week. Watch for a lot of interesting insights to come in the near future on that. Second, we’re continuing to see VC firms raising funds to focus on hard tech and defense tech. Hopefully, this will quickly translate into opening the spigot for startups, but that still remains muted—although there were some defense or defense-adjacent investments announced this week. More movement in the M&A sphere with Merlin Labs acquiring EpiSci and Italy finally approving French firm Safran’s acquisition of Eurofighter component maker Microtecnica. Geopolitically, Israel rescued four hostages captures on 7 Oct, at the cost of several hundred Palestinian lives. The US has proposed a ceasefire plan, now endorsed by the UN Security Council, although Hamas has asked for some amendments. Russia is floating part of its navy in the western hemisphere near Cuba and China may be attempting to probe Taiwanese naval defenses. In space, Boeing’s Starliner craft is stranded with its return date pushed to 22 June, amid multiple leaks from the spacecraft, just the latest in what feels like dozens of major engineering mishaps from one of the largest aerospace and defense companies. How have shareholders NOT demanded the heads of the entire board, yet. Finally, the UEFA European Championship 2024 kicks off today at 3:00pm Eastern at Munich’s Allianz Arena, where Germany is heavily favored to beat Scotland.
