Peter Yang knows a thing or two about the creator economy with his career at Roblox I find myself repeating this mantra constantly to friends and colleagues in the media space. Do the work. Don’t wait for someone to give you a job and title to make stuff. Two key points he makes here: you stop following your own curiosity and you don’t develop real skills. I think it can also make you a crappy employee - how many times have you worked with someone who fails to see the bigger picture? I’ve been reading a Japanese self-help book called “courage to be disliked” - and one point that resonated with me is the illusion of making plans. Paraphrasing here, but author makes the point that you don’t become a lawyer by saying you will go to law school (at least not a good one). You succeed because you regularly engage with the study and practise of law, eventually being asked to pass the bar. Think like your boss. A couple of months ago I posted about RIAA suing Verison. Last month Verizon shot back: https://lnkd.in/g23p4KSX What will be the end result of this “conversation’ playing out in court. In the long term. Is this a result of technology (streaming services) not addressing the problem that they were trying to solve? Perhaps this is a signal that further innovation is needed in how content is managed, distributed, and monetized online. There's a strong argument that, while tech helped create more accessible music platforms, it hasn't fully addressed the concerns of artists, songwriters, and other creators. Is this lawsuit an opportunity to revisit those revenue-sharing models and perhaps craft something fairer?  We want to move forward and not limit creativity as it seems the problem is still not solved. Where do we go from here?

I can’t believe this is still even a discussion. #YouTube is here to stay and only getting bigger and more mainstream. Is it a video platform? Yes Is it vertical video platform? Yes Is it a community platform? Yes Is it a social platform? Yes Is it a commerce platform? Yes Is it an interactive platform? Yes Is it a revenue generating platform? Yes Is it a search engine? Yes The list keeps going! "Have you seen this report? The Shared Commitments in a Blended Reality thing? Yeah, it’s ambitious, it’s pragmatic—it's got everything you want in a roadmap for the internet of the future. Human rights, data stewardship, sustainability—it’s like a buffet for societal values. They’re trying to balance innovation with ethics! You know, like saying, 'Let’s invent teleportation, but make sure everyone’s wearing their seatbelt.' But here’s the thing—they say the success of this hinges on implementation. Implementation! That’s like saying, 'This parachute works great... as long as you actually pull the cord.' Historically, these multistakeholder efforts have trouble keeping momentum. You’ve got the EU with their GDPR saying, 'Protect all the data!' and the US saying, 'Eh, just take the data, nobody’s looking.' It’s like trying to get a band to play the same song, but everyone’s in a different time zone. And inclusivity? Accessibility? The report nails it—they say the internet’s getting all immersive and spatial. Spatial! What does that even mean? It means that if we don’t invest in infrastructure for underserved regions, the digital divide is gonna turn into the Grand Canyon. You can’t have a 'blended reality' when half the world doesn’t even have Wi-Fi! What are they gonna blend it with? A flip phone? Oh, and sustainability? That’s the big one. Everyone’s talking about XR hardware, data centers, servers humming away 24/7—it’s like they’re building the internet on a treadmill powered by fossil fuels. They’re saying, 'Yeah, we’re advancing humanity, but at the same time, we’re melting the glaciers.' The industry has to work with environmental experts. 'Green technologies,' they say. You ever notice every tech company loves to say they’re going green? Meanwhile, their server farms are drinking electricity like it’s happy hour. So yeah, ambitious report, good ideas—but let’s see if they can pull it off. Because the future of the internet isn’t just about cool tech. It’s about making sure the real world doesn’t fall apart while we’re too busy putting on VR headsets! Over my 20 years at record companies i have been asked for countless ticket request here are my top 15 complaints 1.  I love when you say Oh, I will pay for them. I hate to break it to you You’re Goddamn Right You’re Paying for them. 2.  NO I cannot get you a deal on tickets. What kind of deal are you looking for???? Tickets cost what they cost. There is no discount 3.  Don’t ask me what the tickets cost. LOOK IT UP. It is your job to know what you are asking for. If you ask me to get you tickets, you can safely assume I am going to pull the top tier P1 tickets. That means whatever the highest price is and add another $150 to and that is what it costs. 4.  If you ask me for tickets and I go through all the trouble to get them for you and now you find out that the tickets are $300.00 per ticket and then say,  "Oh never mind I did not realize they would be so expensive". Pull that move and you will move to the head of the line on THE LIST 5.  YES, you asking me to get you tickets is a massive pain in the ass. 6.  Oh you want 9 tickets all in the front row .... Yea if you think you’re a dick for asking for 9 tickets go with the feeling. 7.  Don’t call me every day because your credit card has not been charged yet. If you don’t like the way I am doing, you a favor please go to Ticketmaster they will charge your card right away. 8.  Call me at the last second to change the name on the tickets or the dates will get you added to THE LIST. 9.  NO I am NOT going to call the promoter to get you a "Deal" on your tickets. Please see line 2. What kind of deal do you think you can get…Dumbass. 10. If you give me a credit card that is maxed out, cancelled or your card is declined you have now just made THE LIST. That’s it, you have blown it...No I don’t want to hear the excuse. You have made me look stupid and now I have to do double the work to fix it. 11. NO, there are no backstage passes with these tickets and NO there is no VIP parking for you either. 12. If you are buying tickets for your best friend’s next-door neighbor’s cleaning woman's cousin’s daughter who is just the biggest Justin Bieber fan, Please DONT CALL ME. I will get tickets for YOU because you are a friend once you get 2-3 people removed, I want no part of it. 13. Parking is YOUR problem. I have done everything for you. Figuring out where to park will be your problem. Put a crowbar in your wallet and pry out a $20 and park. 14. Remember the phrase THANK YOU.     When it is all done and you have your tickets and you have enjoyed the show, a simple Thank You goes a Looooooong way. Everyone will bust my balls for tickets with countless emails and phones calls, but do they ever say Thank You!  NO, THEY DONT If you pull that move more than once and guess what you make THE LIST. 15. If you have not emailed, texted or spoken to me on the phone in the last 6 months DO NOT call and ask me for tickets. If you can’t even maintain a basic friendship do not come around asking for favors.

DURING THE FALL This past week: - We found out that Streaming hit its highest share of TV viewing ever. - We learned that YouTube surpassed The Walt Disney Company as the most watched single distributor - on the TV. - And we heard from Sony’s CEO that in the next two years the Media industry is in for “chaos - mergers and bankruptcies and sales and all kinds of fun things.” “The business will be in a period of chaos for the next 18 to 24 months. Just look at all the companies with cable networks that have this albatross of cable networks around their necks that they have to figure out what to do with.” https://lnkd.in/eGmhjXya The most surprising part of all this? That the collective braintrust of the Media ecosystem acted as if all of this was somehow surprising. “Vinciquerra is certainly not the first media executive to predict more consolidation in Hollywood, but he may be the only one using the most-damning language.” - IndieWire Really IndieWire? I have been ringing the alarm bell with much stronger language FOR YEARS. I have written the phase “Media Apocalypse” more times than anyone can count. I have been urging Disney to do big things like buy Roblox. I have been calling for David Zaslav to be fired for malpractice. I have been beseeching the C-Suites, boards, and shareholders of Big Media to look beyond the models of the past, look towards Big Tech lifestyle bundles as the the future, to collaborate with their data in order to better compete with the Trillion Dollar Death Stars, to empower younger product and project managers to make the transformations they need, and to (finally) put their consumers at the center of everything they do. While some of you reading this may have listened, few (if any) in Hollywood have. To be fair, it’s hard to hear the strategic advice of an outsider when your conference rooms are packed full of Ivy League fraternity brothers harrumphing their sycophancy in your ears. And boy are those free sushi lunches on the 52nd floor hella distracting! Now, as a consequence of years of corporately delinquent negligence and continual narcissistic anal gazing, Paramount is being sold for parts, Warner Bros. Discovery has lost 71% of its value, Disney (after an historically disastrous and permanently damaging non-succession) is AGAIN looking for a successor, Fox Corporation is reenacting (verbatim) the last season of Succession, and Netflix is playing a shell game with their failing ad business. So what’s a Media business to do now? More importantly, what the fuck happens NEXT? I read this interesting article on whether Netflix or Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios was the biggest streamer. From a subscriber standpoint Netflix reported that it had 269.6 million global subscribers at the end of March 2024, as reported in its April Q1 2024 earnings. Amazon Prime Video does not disclose subscriber numbers, but mentioned in a CEO’s letter to shareholders that it had had “over 200 million” subscribers as of April 2024. An argument can be made that Amazon Prime subscribers do so for the shipping benefit but at the end of the day being a Prime member gets you the entertainment for free. I opted for the $50 per year ad-free which I think is still a great value …I think I made it back just off of watching Fallout commercial free. The next area I wanted to look at is revenue. Amazon’s reportsthat its subscription services alone brought in $10.48 billion in Q1 of 2024. In Netflix’s latest earnings, revenue came in at $9.37 billion for Q1 2024. I think going forward people are may not see the stealth that Amazon has employed in mechandising. After I binged Fallout I went to Amazon to see what kind items I could buy from the show. The number of t-shirts and other Fallout products rivaled what I’d see of the movies came from The Walt Disney Company. It’s kind of sad watching the studios trying to keep their heads above the debt waters. Like most movie fans I want to see Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. There are a number of things happening all at once in podcasting: 1. Video - as a driver of awareness AND listens 2. Subscription - building sustainable revenue 3. Ads going up in frequency but down in price as they commodify and, if we aren’t careful, wreck the listener experience. Who am I to judge Spotify ? This sounds like a play to become YouTube , or at least draw some of those creators and dollars. But even a top show like Diary of a CEO or Bill Simmons has only made digital pennies from YouTube- will be interesting to see if there’s more money in the Spotify universe or if this is just a hedge as they compete with YT and Netflix for attention.
