I enjoyed going on Nick Telson-Sillett’s podcast, Pitch Deck by Forward Pursuit. Nick is a serial founder and investor (founded and exited DesignMyNight) so knows both sides of the table which always makes for an enriching chat. As of November 30, 2024, women-led VC funds have raised $2.54 billion, which represents a 25% decrease from 2023's total of $3.43 billion. In comparison, global venture fundraising is down 13% YoY. I’m excited to publicly share something that has been in the works for a few months at the 9point8 Collective. We’ve launched our Virtual Studio! This is a program for early-stage companies that provides the coaching, development and venture-building tools they need to find traction and scale. The program is modeled off of the venture-building processes found inside #VentureStudios, which have delivered 2X IRR and exit 45% faster than traditional #VC-backed #startups over the last 10 years. Some of the secret sauce to this is that studios have found a way to validate strategies early on, de-risk execution, preserve and extend limited runway, and create efficient business models very fast. We at 9point8 are seasoned studio builders and are on a mission to bring this value to founding teams as they navigate their startup journeys. What we’ve done with the Virtual Studio is distill these key processes and techniques, add in our own expertise and best practices, and package them into a program which meets start-ups where they are. We are now opening up our Summer 2024 Cohort, slated to begin in July. Space is limited, so I’m sharing the opportunity with my network before we fill the cohort. Christine Deputy the former CPO at Pinterest shared one of the most unique approaches to high-potential leadership development I’ve heard: -> The CNEXT Accelerator program. 👇 Here’s a snippet of our conversation 👇 Me: Can you explain how your high-potential development program works? Christine: We partnered with many Fortune 100+ companies to build CNEXT. It allows our employees and leaders to gain exposure to leaders from different industries. Me: Why not just build something in-house? Deputy: If you're developing people within your organization, they’re limited to certain exposures—your industry, your capabilities, and your approach to development. Me: So this program broadens exposure? Deputy: Exactly. When you expose people to other industries and give them a space to network with folks who face different challenges, it gives them a chance to grow and develop in an accelerated manner. Me: How do you loop in your participants’ managers if it’s not in-house? Deputy: Senior leaders like me, who have team leaders in CNEXT, get coaching around the same subjects. That way we can have conversations with our team leaders and partner with them throughout CNEXT and beyond. *** It’s a brilliant approach: 1. I read an article by TechCrunch yesterday. It reminded me of why I chose a career in DEI. The article was about Keely Cat-Wells, an entrepreneur and disability rights advocate. She founded the company Making Space in 2023 and the goal is to help companies from all sectors hire, train and retain disabled talent. While in a tough period of trying to get investors for her company, she encountered a VC who was not afraid to air his opinion.  He said to her, "We love what you’re building but would only consider investing if you brought on a non-disabled, male co-founder." Not only did he not want to invest in a female owned company but he also did not want a disabled person. This is 2024 and we still have people that don’t believe in women having leadership roles and disabled people having jobs. This is the reason I educate people everyday on DEI practices. To get rid of biases. How to Think About VC _______ I stumbled upon this podcast by Heidi Roizen of Threshold Ventures. It’s a great primer for founders who aren’t familiar with how VC works. Here are three things from this episode that I wish every founder who pitched PHX Ventures knew: 1. "Venture capital is a hits business – and in order to attract VC money, your startup needs to have the potential to be that hit. That usually means not only are you addressing a large market, but you have a credible and compelling plan to dominate that market." 2. "It turns out that the VC model is not a good fit for the vast majority of startups – and in fact, more than 99% of US startups build their businesses without VC money." 3. "It’s only a good deal – for both the VCs and the entrepreneurs – if the money invested is used to capture and hopefully dominate a large market. And it’s usually some type of business that wouldn't have been able to do so without the venture capital."

Frederik is Google’s original Chief Innovation Evangelist, and just published his first book, “What’s Next Is Now.” *** Let’s face it: our minds are wired to crave certainty about the future. We scour the news, analyze trends, and even check our horoscopes—all in search of a glimpse into what’s coming next. But here’s the thing: that relentless hunt for predictions is a mistake! Why? Because the future isn’t something that happens to you. It’s something you actively shape. By obsessing over predictions, we become passive observers, waiting for the future to unfold. But what if we flipped the script? What if we stopped worrying about what might happen and started creating the future we want? I’m a future optimist because I believe in embracing the opportunities ahead rather than fearing uncertainty. The choices you make today are the building blocks of your future. The more intentional and varied your choices, the more opportunities you create for yourself. On the flip side, if you avoid stepping outside your comfort zone, someone else ends up making choices for you. Ever wonder how people find themselves in unfulfilling careers? It’s often because they stopped making intentional choices that could have led them down a different path. They become passengers in a car driven by fate, luck, or happenstance. But here’s the good news: You don’t have to be a passenger. You can be the driver. Imagination is your most powerful tool. I recently sat down with a group of Forum Ventures founders about to go out to fundraise and the topic of SAFE rounds came up. The context focused on the pros/cons of raising a priced vs a SAFE round and the conversation notably shifted toward the dilution implications of a SAFE round. Founders are keenly aware of the top line dilution of any funding round - ie selling 20% of their startup for $3M at a $15M cap - but very few fully grasp the implications of doing a SAFE round vs a priced round. The universal standard for institutional VC investors is a post money SAFE. This document essentially outlines ownership that an investor will have in a startup just prior to the execution of a priced round. Most importantly though, it is structured so that an investor in that SAFE will not be diluted by subsequent SAFE's that are issued. This is where founder education around the implications of this structure are not fully appreciated. In a situation where a founder continues to stack subsequent SAFEs, they don't actually convert until the first priced round and the net dilution they are taking is actually more than they realize. Here is a practical example - take a situation where a founder has already sold 15% of their business on a post money SAFE in a pre-seed round, and is now choosing to sell another 20% in a seed round. If the founder opts to raise this money on SAFEs, the dilution of that additional 20% will come entirely from common equity holders- meaning they will now own 65%. If SAFE holders were also diluted by that round, as they would be in a priced round, the founder would own 68%. This dynamic becomes more dramatic the more capital a founder raises on SAFEs. Note - this is a high level example and does not include an option pool carve out or other round nuances. Almost universally, when a founder raises their first priced round, there is some degree of sticker shock at the outright dilution on their cap table, particularly when options pools are factored in. This pain is even more acute when a founder has raised a fair amount of capital on SAFEs along the way. There are certainly benefits to raising SAFE round, mainly cash in hand 6-8 weeks faster and not having to decide on board seats too early, but I encourage all of our founders to run through cap table modeling and correctly account for the implications of SAFE rounds before they make fundraising decisions.

I just wrapped up a panel with the Marketing Leadership affinity group within the How Women Invest community with my hero Auntie Nancy Hayes, aka the Yoda of board membership, angel investing, and general badassery. We talked about different ways to serve on boards, a role in which experienced Marketers seem to be often underrepresented. Why? If I had to guess, I'd say: 1 - Most heads of marketing are women 2 - marketing is undervalued, especially under sales/revenue experience 3—Compound the first two with the messages you tell yourself about your own worthiness, and suddenly, you're a great marketer for everyone else but yourself. ___________ For those who are interested in getting closer or into the board room, there are so many ways to start/get experience: 1—Board Observer (one of my current board roles)—you represent the investor but have no votes. It is unpaid, but/and hugely essential to act as a bridge of visibility and communication between the fund you've invested with and the company in which the fund has invested. My role brings value to both sides with much less bias than the other VC board seats. 2—Corporate board director—There is much governance but not much influence on the product, as the company usually has big enough teams for that. There is a lot of hiring/firing CEOs (read: drama), which can still be fun, especially for those fresh-popcorn-in-my-bag swag kinda folks (both grossly generalizing and way understating this role's fiduciary importance, but you get the idea). 3—Independent board director—this is another of my favorite places to sit. It is much like the Board observer role but with voting rights and equity (although not always, as these terms are negotiated and influenced by the shareholding board seats). You are NOT representing a VC fund (typically), but you might have subject matter expertise in the product or are a generalist boss gal like myself and bring a sense of neutrality and balance to the board. 4—Advisor. Advisors are similar to IBD in terms of influence and type of advice but are not part of the board or its meetings. This role is usually paid in some combination of equity and cash. It's another of my faves. (Are you seeing the trend here?) We have not even touched non-profit boards (where I got my start and am currently sitting on my sixth), but we will save it for next time as it's a whole 'nother Oprah. The future of tech is here, and it's wearing glasses 🕶️ Here is an intriguing article about how Snap's CEO, Evan Spiegel, believes his company is leading the charge in AR smart glasses, with Meta and Apple set to follow. As someone who’s been following the AR space closely, I find it exciting to see companies like Snap pushing the boundaries of what smart glasses can do. Spiegel’s vision of using hands and voice to interact with augmented reality is a game-changer. Snap’s Spectacles, now in their 5th generation, are already making waves among developers. The goal is clear: to bring computing back into the real world, away from screens and closer to our daily lives. While Meta’s Ray-Ban Stories and Apple’s Vision Pro are also making significant strides, Snap’s approach to natural interaction and developer-friendly pricing could be the key to mainstream adoption. Big fan of this direction from Day One Ventures and Masha Bucher. One might wonder why it would be bad for the divide between society and technology to grow. There are many arguments to make, but I'd like to suggest one from a purely practical standpoint, one that should appeal even to people who believe technology primarily drives the future. Artists often play the role of integrators/synthesizers/sense-makers of what can be a confusing pull into the future (whether driven by technology, ideology, or otherwise) based on society's current conceptual frameworks. Keeping the divide small means a larger portion of the society has updated their concepts to align with the best models we have of the world. A larger portion of society with updated concepts means we have more people better equipped to tackle the challenges of the future. With that in mind, I'd expect a need to increase investment in artists broadly speaking as we increase investments in technology in order for technology to actually progress in solving important challenges as quickly as possible.
