States are employing various means of reaching diverse and needy families through single touch points and coalitions with other entities such as faith-based organizations. I was happy to see that academia was mentioned at least in one example as part of coalition building. Also mentioned are recruitment strategies for building respite workforce. Some states are hitting all the right buttons and these should serve as models for other states, and also for expanding help to other areas beyond respite. The best way you can ensure innovative programming at the state and federal level is to let your legislators know that these are priorities. The Maine Primary Care Association (MPCA) has spotlighted "Connecting the Dots Between Relationships and Health: Supporting Patients & Providers on How to Talk About Abuse & Violence Utilizing the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence Healthcare Response Toolkit" – a presentation by Amanda Taisey, MCEDV, and Celia Demos, MeCDC Division of Public Health Nursing (PHN), as part of MPCA's 2024 Annual Conference on October 23rd at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine. "We are excited for the opportunity to partner with PHN as we share MCEDV’s resources that support healthcare providers caring for DV survivors in their practices. The physical and mental health impacts of DV are often long lasting and we see Maine’s Community Health Centers as critical partners in creating spaces where survivors can feel safe disclosing any abuse or violence they may be facing." – Amanda Taisey, Health Systems Coordinator, MCEDV Taisey and Demos will examine the dynamics of domestic abuse and violence and share recommendations offered by the Maine Domestic Abuse Homicide Review Panel to healthcare providers for integration into their practice. They will discuss practical steps and share tangible materials healthcare providers can utilize to screen and support survivors of domestic abuse and violence, plus present a collaborative case study between the MCEDV and PHN which details the year-long process to revise their domestic violence screening and response policy and protocol. Healthy aging has not historically been central to the public health agenda but clearly, public health interventions are at least partly responsible for the longevity we are experiencing today. Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) is working to elevate healthy aging as a core public health function through its Age-Friendly Public Health Systems (AFPHS) movement, based on a framework of six tenets that are guiding public health efforts to improve older adult health and well-being. This web training session will introduce participants to AFPHS, including examples from one local and one state health department that have adopted and implemented APHFS principles.

NEXT WEEK: #DAAHR Forum on Plan to Change Disability Evaluations! On Monday, June 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. ET, Disability Advocates Advancing Our Healthcare Rights (#DAAHR), a coalition organized by Boston Center for Independent Living and Disability Policy Consortium, will hold a virtual forum to discuss MassHealth’s plan to establish a centralized evaluation for services for people with disabilities. The proposed Independent Assessment Entity (#IAE) will evaluate individuals on MassHealth, One Care, and Senior Care Options (#SCO) for Personal Care Attendant (#PCA) services, adult foster care, group adult foster care, day habilitation services, and the #PACE program. Historically, evaluations have been conducted by disability service organizations because providers understand disability and independent living—they are culturally and linguistically competent. Advocates are concerned that a single centralized entity might exacerbate red tape; remain faceless, intransparent, and removed from community members' lived experience; be driven by perverse incentives; and reduce service offerings for disabled consumers. However, the Commonwealth believes its plan will improve the current evaluation system and even increase access to services. On Friday, three of our four staff attended the Perinatal Quality Collaborative for Maine's (#PQC4ME) annual conference in Augusta. We've included some staff reflections below: #POLICY 🗳 : Reversing the effects of decades of chronic underinvestment in perinatal outcomes will require strategic, policy-level advocacy work in Maine. #COLLABORATION 🤝 : Improving Maine's perinatal health metrics demands a coordinated, collaborative, and multi-sector response to patient voices. It is imperative that the healthcare system, the legislature, community-based organizations, and perinatal professionals (in particular #doulas) work together. #MAINESUCCESSES 🌲 : Strategic leadership and orchestration is well underway in Maine, with growing opportunities for #qualityimprovement expertise from all sectors. #TESTIMONY & #STORIES 🗣 : To influence the outcomes and change the minds of policy-makers and legislators, we need testimony from those most impacted and harmed by the lack of investment and protections. Coaching on the effective delivery of stories from those with actual lived experiences is the next step. A very special thank you to the PQC4ME team for putting on an A++ conference. In 2023, we continued to see threats that impact SRHR progress, and yet in the face of these challenges we also saw important advances. CIFF worked with partners to close the funding gaps for family planning, strengthen government ownership of SRHR, and improve access to self-managed contraception, HIV self-testing and access to quality safe abortion or post-abortion care. As put by our Executive Director for SRHR Miles Kemplay, although the scale of the issues we face far outweigh the current solutions available - we are able to see progress & we can demonstrate alongside partners that rapid change is possible. When discussing the lack of access to healthcare in rural America, behavioral healthcare is often left out. Rural communities face a disproportionate lack of access to healthcare. However, their patient population needs and deserves access to not only healthcare, but quality healthcare, that meets their needs. This includes behavioral healthcare. This is one great example of how to do it right. By providing quality behavioral healthcare in rural communities, and personalizing care to the needs of the patient population, we can ensure comprehensive care. Without offering this range of care, or curating healthcare opportunities to the needs of patients in the community, healthcare falls short of the quality the community needs.
