Q1 numbers are in! They show fitness has exploded past pre-pandemic numbers at 2x the workouts logged! Although net new members remain flat YoY for gyms in Q1 based on a study done by ABC Fitness. This puts an emphasis on retention for the last half of 2024. ***The Rise of GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs: Implications for the Fitness Industry*** Check out this thought from Oliver Patrick! worth checking out if you are in health clubs. The health club industry must see these intelligent — and effective — weight loss medications as the best client acquisition tool in a generation,” he says. “The GLP-1 rise has given opportunity to a mass debate on the topic of generic weight loss versus body fat loss, with unequivocal data showing lean tissue will be lost as a part of any GLP-1 induced weight reduction.” That point in particular is crucial to emphasize: “This discussion over body composition, above and beyond simple mass loss, places consumers firmly at the door of resistance training facilities.” In other words, your door. “Health clubs must be quick to grasp the opportunities this loss of lean tissue presents; some have already made intelligent moves,” Patrick adds. “Whilst GLP-1 faces scarcity issues, its price and market remain more of a premium offering. Considering this premium placement, some top-tier operators are right to embed GLP-1 prescribing medical practices into their spaces and control the weight management journey A-Z.” But it won’t be a premium-tier offering forever, he points out: “As GLP-1 prices drop, and the product democratizes, we should expect all tiers of facilities to aggressively communicate about the holistic benefits of retained muscle mass to new audiences,” Patrick says. “A rising discussion on lean tissue and longevity, disease mitigation, avoidance of frailty, and more must be driven by the fitness community.” This is where the GLP-1 acts more as a catalyst versus the end-all, be-all. “We must make our own market,” advises Patrick. “Beyond marketing, gyms must embed consistent body composition measurements, to prove effectiveness beyond inactive weight loss. Two clients losing 20 pounds can only be distinguished if we know which tissues have been lost and which remains. Health clubs can seize an invigorated global weight loss audience if they market with new messaging, create technical capability to receive new audiences, create assessments to evaluate success, and are brave enough to align with a product many will initially deem to be a competitor. GLP-1 and its cheaper derivatives will win weight loss, we must get on the train or run the risk of being left behind in the weight management space.” As you can see, there are significant risks that come with taking GLP-1's, but with its growing popularity, there are also opportunities for you to work with this trend to help both your clients and your business if you choose to.

The State of the Industry GLP-1s Don’t believe the hype. It’s holding you back. Again I’ll say that the GLP-1 market could be the best market expansion opportunity that we have ever seen. So why then with possibly millions of people using or having used these drugs, has it not made a dent in the industry. And in those millions there has to be club members. What gives? I’ve attached an article I’ve read at least 5 times. And it’s a great example of the huge impact of GLP-1s prognostication buffered by a whole bunch of buts, ifs, etc. The opening paragraph says exactly that. There’s so much to unpack here that I’m not even sure where to start. But let’s start with my header of don’t believe the hype. Over the past year we have put GLP-1s on some kind of golden ticket pedestal. Made the assumptive leap that because the drug seemed to work all these people would just naturally want to extend their efforts into the inclusion of exercise. And physicians knowing the need for exercise would just start sending us all their patients. How’s that working out. For now let’s focus on club members and prospects. We know we all have members using these drugs. But we also know there’s a very good chance they won’t admit it. And very small chance they’ll share that at the sales table. So now what. Oh boy. Wish me luck. Stop highlighting GLP-1s. These people don’t want anyone to know. But! Take the opportunity of all this noise about weight loss and muscle loss to offer a structured training program designed to maximize the results for anyone trying to lose weight. Considering it’s a physiological fact that muscle loss comes with any type of weight loss, use the muscle loss noise of GLP-1s to springboard programming around the need for strength for anyone trying to lose weight. Make the programming educational as well. But make it weight loss generic so your GLP-1 members can engage without exposure. And yes this will require some housework with staff training but I’ll touch on later how this approach will set us up for a legitimate run at medical meets fitness. And this is an approach that all club models can launch. Not just the 800 pound gorillas. I joined Proteus Motion because it was something I wish I had when I was training. Most people think of us as a piece of hardware, but I think we are the #fitness industry's best sales tool. In 10 minutes we can: - Assess anyone for performance in their sport (we are all #athletes) - Create a movement-by-movement analysis of strength and power and compare them to population norms (hello #longevity trend) - Create 12 workouts designed to address their weakest performing movements and correct imbalances (goodbye monotonous programming) - Show people objective data about themselves. IMO this is the best way to demonstrate expertise and build trust in the fitness services world (cha ching) During an initial session with a new client, that leaves 45+ minutes to wow them, show why they'll get meaningful results with you, and learn all about them as a person.

Long Term Memberships: → Transition to 12-month memberships → As the dominantly sold product. → Longer Memberships = Better LTV 02. Niche Membership Offers: → Introduce of 1x or 2x a week membership → For those who attend numerous studios → (i.e. the ClassPass crowd) 03. Streamlined Client Journey: → Build a tight member journey → Focusing on the first 8 weeks → Or usage and non-usage followups → For those who don’t attend for 2 weeks or more. 04. FEEL GOOD FRIDAY: THROWBACK Who created the first recovery room in the fitness industry? The answer could very well be Mike Feeney, the living legend, for UFC GYM. This ad dates way back to early 2017 (pardon the resolution) to their Recovery Corner, perhaps the first dedicated area for recovery in big box fitness anywhere. In these pre-historic times, the Hyperice Raptor roamed the Earth, Normatec and Hyperice were two separate companies, and the Hypervolt was still a year from launching. For those who don't know, The Raptor was a Six-Speed, Multiple Magnetic attachment, $3500 percussion device that plugged into a wall and would eviscerate muscle knots and tension. IT WAS AWESOME. We worked with steve stonehouse, Mike Gray, Razor ROBERT McCullough IV and Donnie Oliver to make sure their trainers were ready to deliver an incredible service with the Raptor. And they did. The UFC Gym Recovery Corner had Raptor treatments, Full Body Cryo, Normatec sessions (shout out Dan Canina) and HydroMassage chairs. It's pretty cool to see how far we've come together. Check out our Client Sam Toomer, Pro MMA Fighter turned Software Engineer as he works with me to release stress through this killer leg routine. It is focused on building size through tempo and eccentric control. 1.) Back squat drop set: Increase weight and lower reps each round for 10 reps, 7 reps, and 4 reps 2.) Glute Medius Iso Leg Press: One leg at a time and angle out to isolate the gluteus Medius. Angle the shoulders and hip out at a 45 degree angle and perform a slow 10 reps per side. 3.) Balance slider lunge (top level): Sam is an elite athlete, so this is the hardest you can make this exercise with the SandDune Stepper and unstable bar.
