Today FEMA announced $1 billion in project selections to make communities more resilient to climate change and hazards. Of the available funding, $587 million is benefitting Justice40 communities that are overburdened by pollution and marginalized by underinvestment. Since 2020, FEMA has seen an upward trend of exceeding its Justice40 goals. Excited to see PowerLines and Charles Hua transform utility regulation for the future - including putting a spotlight on the people who make it happen. Public utility commission staff have a difficult and busy job - one that often goes unnoticed. A rate case is a great example. While attention is justifiably focused on utility bill increases, PUC staff deserve credit for driving utility costs down all the same. In Massachusetts, the Department of Public Utilities recently saved National Grid customers $38.7 million through a reduction in the company's proposed revenue requirement. For an agency with a staff budget (FY25) of $14.5 million - much of which is dedicated to other areas (e.g., transportation, pipeline safety, natural gas, etc.) - that's an impressive return on public investment and a compelling strategy to advancing affordability. As we ask our public utility commissions to explore a broader view of the public interest and put in the work to realize that future, we should expect the need for - and provide - additional staffing and resources for these agencies.

🚨🚸🚷Baltimore reaches $44 million settlement in suit over pedestrian accessibility 🚷🚸🚨 Three decades after the ADA was passed in 1990, less than 2 percent of Baltimore City sidewalks were accessible, according to a City Department of Transportation report. 🙅🏼‍♀️🙈🙉🙊NEGLECT = $44M 💰💰 A person on a commission told me the city’s response to disability complaints made it apparent that no one cares. I remember going to a budget hearing listening to a prior director talk about hiring an attorney to handle disabilities after I left. She is great, but just one person. In reality, the staff of two was reduced to one; and my request for ARPA Funding for a comprehensive disability plan was blocked. The disability staff/commission was no where in the city’s budget and I was told they don’t need to be by the prior director. Who does fuzzy math in this day and age in the city? 👀 Have they read Isabel Mercedes Cumming’s reports? I am not snitching - it is legal (I think)🤔 Government bureaucrats kick the can down the road until the Court makes them pay. Many people give up or do not live long enough to see the results. One of the only councilpersons who solicited my advice about comprehensive disability equity in the city is Phylicia Porter. We can’t leave our disability community behind. 🙏🏽 People with disabilities should not have to sue 👩🏽‍⚖️in order to get on and off their block. One day, I hope that Baltimore will #BMoreAccessible. Now I am about to bring some constructive feedback to Baltimore County after I visited a library today.
