Big wine is freaking out.😮 In particular getting new consumers as the 60+ age demographic drives the profit of the wine industry currently. Like Cable TV. They are using the same playbook that worked during boom times and is obviously not working now. Other categories such as Non-Alcoholic Beverage, software, snacks - they give new users samples, small sizes, and discounts to get consumers to try their products and get them to be a life long fan. Lower the barrier to entry, generate trial. Wine industry sadly does the opposite. They make it hard to try great wine. Restaurants are the ideal place for wine consumer trial. You can try one glass, instead of buying a bottle at a store which is 4 or 5 glasses of wine. Wines by the glass served in restaurants have steadily been going to lower & lower quality while the prices have risen in the last 15 years. Wine lists are smaller and some time house wine only is served. Basically the industry has created less opportunities to try a quality wine, and we’ve seen consumer decline accelerate the past 10 years. Coincidence? Buying a wine by the glass in most restaurants today: 😬Wine that is not fresh - it’s crazy that wine lovers, foodies, and beverage enthusiasts roll the dice every time we order a glass of wine at a restaurant. (a quick prayer to yourself that “hope the wine is fresh.”) 🐍Low quality - That feeling when you don’t know any of the wine brands they are serving. You order a wine by the glass and you know in 2 sips that they got you. Jokes on you! it is a $7 dollar bottle to go with your $16 burrito/burger/pizza/etc. 🤢Eclectic style/ No name wine - this is the one where the staff have to convince you that it’s good. That you don’t understand, That it’s an “acquired taste”🙄 🤔overpriced - Wine lovers know. I saw that on the bottom shelf at my local store. We aren’t buying it. 🤡House wine - Usually the cheapest and worst thing on the menu, food included. Plus no one has an idea what it is, who made it, and where it’s from. If you say the word “house wine” what comes to mind? Cheap, gross, overpriced. Sometimes it’s the only wine option. 🤦🏻‍♂️ What can be done? Innovate or become cable TV. 💯Cans is a better way to distribute higher quality wine to more restaurants/ consumers A great canned wine is fresh and consistent. You know what you are getting. A better wine by the glass consumer experience. If we as an industry can get the new consumers drinking quality wine at the beginning of the journey, they can experience all the other wonderful wines in the world. if you’re very first drink of wine is very low-quality, you might just go to beer, spirits, RTDs,etc forever. Wine has been around for 6000 years, it’s great with food, naturally low carb and low sugar. A gift to humanity. It’s only been hard to to get a good glass for 15 years.

Many of us already engage in the subscription economy, so why haven't wineries adopted this model? Wine subscriptions vary from a traditional club model by focusing on the wants and pain points of younger consumers, like affordability and flexibility. The industry struggles to define what these subscriptions would look like, but wineries have a great opportunity now to adapt and expand to an entirely new demographic of wine drinkers.

It's agreed that today's wine education should concentrate on enabling consumers to discover their preferences instead of turning everyone into a "wine expert" or emphasizing too much only on "products" and quality itself. Education should be tailored and categorized according to different target audiences, such as consumers and customers, to ensure it's "fit-for-purpose". For entry-level wines, the beverage and beer industry's "occasion-based" and "consumer-centric" approaches could serve as excellent models for wine marketing strategies. Continuous building brand awareness but further, brand love. #wineeducation #wineindustry

Wine sales from 2018 – 2028, over a ten-year period, are forecast to reduce in volume by 20%. That's a prediction from IWSR's Lulie Halstead. When you have a new arrival or a product launch, lean on impulse buyers. … and maybe throw on a limited-time offer if you really want to seal the deal. New arrivals and product launches are SURPRISINGLY underutilized in the wine industry, imo. I can’t tell you how many wineries I’ve talked with who have new wines or experiences on their website that they have NEVER told their subscribers about. Very few of your customers will visit your website on their own to seek out your wines - send a new arrival or product launch email campaign to get more awareness and ultimately, more ecommerce!
