Talking to some industry colleagues, I had a moment of clarity when it comes to business competition... Be competitive, not combative. Compete on the strengths of your own offerings rather than attacking others. Differentiation and denigration are two very different things. This shows confidence, professionalism, and boosts your reputation. Trashing competition lowers the bar for the whole industry.

Embracing the Pause: Remembering How to Slow Down   At Gilead, our week-long summer shutdown offers a much-needed break and a perfect mid-year point for reflection. It's a chance to pause and assess both professional and personal goals.   Slowing down is tough for me. Even when I try to unwind over the weekend, maybe by binge-watching my favorite show, my mind doesn’t stop. I fear that pausing might cause things to unravel, and I often feel my worth is tied to my achievements. This belief was likely inherited from my grandmother, who grew up during the Depression and taught me that hard work and constant activity are crucial to success and self-worth. This week, by taking time to slow down, I've become more observant of my surroundings: shifting ocean tides, sunrise blooms, and lively local beachgoers. Engaging in activities like beach walks, digging in the sand with my kid, and floating over ocean waves has helped me step out of my usual stream of thoughts. These moments of pause not only help me reflect, reset, and recharge, but also reaffirm why I love what I do. By stepping back and slowing down, I rediscover the meaningful aspects of my work and life. I am hopeful that regularly taking time to pause will shift my perspective, showing me that real value and productivity come from balance and well-being, not just constant activity.   As I return from vacation, I am committed to re-establishing 3 top practices of slowing down:   1. Start the Day with Mindfulness: Begin each morning with a few minutes of mindfulness or meditation to set a calm tone. 2. Take Regular Breaks: Schedule short breaks to step away, breathe, and reset. 3. Listen and Connect: Make time to genuinely listen and connect with colleagues, which strengthens professional relationships and builds a supportive work environment.   How do you hold on to your vacation glow? In 2020, the AbbVie Foundation embarked on a journey with the UChicago Medicine’s Urban Health Initiative (UHI) to launch the Liaisons in Care (LinC) program to reduce health disparities in marginalized communities. Fast forward four years, today, our Corporate Responsibility & Global Philanthropy Team had the honor of welcoming the LinC Team to our HQ to celebrate our progress and discuss the challenges and opportunities for continuing to advance health equity. Since launching on Chicago’s South Side—a community grappling with some of the worst economic, health, social, and violence outcomes in the United States due to generations of structural inequality and neglect that have eroded essential social, economic, and health-promoting infrastructure—LinC’s community health workers and partnerships have assisted over 27,000 residents in navigating care and accessing vital health and social services, resulting in measurable improvements in health outcomes. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhuman.” We need to recognize that health inequities affect us all, and together, we must advocate for a future where everyone has access to the care they need.

As every golfer knows, the game is a metaphor. There’s so much to think about, and reflect on, as we walk the fairways. I was fortunate to have Tommy Hrach as my amazing caddy this past season. He was insightful, patient, and positive. Here are four tips from Tommy—his instructions for golf (and life).   1. Stare at it. Tommy wanted me to keep my eye on the ball. That focus—and not lifting my head to peak how I did on my shot—helped me make better contact. Any problem or opportunity can benefit from that commitment to holding a steady gaze. On the fairway or my daily path, I want to hold my attention still, eyes squarely on the prize. 2. Follow through. Sometimes I forget to finish the swing, causing me to lose distance and loft. Remembering to stay committed until the very end is as important for golf as it is for most endeavors. Don’t give up halfway through. 3. Tempo. Tommy would complement my tempo when my swing was neither too fast nor too slow. It’s a hard concept to master. But once I got the feeling, there’s a grace and ease to my shots. Whether dancing, walking, or talking, I’m going to look for a good tempo and keep the beat. 4. Stand like a tree. I would wiggle and wave my club around trying to smack the ball as hard as I could. In truth, a grounded stance, a shortened backswing, and a sense of serenity improved my game a lot. I will try to hold the quiet posture off the course, too.   Like so many great caddies, Tommy not only carries your bag, he is an advisor, cheerleader, teacher, and friend. What did you learn this summer?   #Wellness #SummerReflections

Food for thought: Being nonproductive is productive. Americans value hard work more than anything else in life. The following values is the result of a Wall Street journal/NORC Poll taken in 2023: Hard work 94% Self-fulfillment 91% Marriage 70% Patriotism 60% Tolerance for others 90% Social pressures to be productive not to mention a culture that prizes multitasking make doing nothing to do, for fear of being accused of the dreaded laziness. However, experts say there are rewards for not pushing yourself to the edge all the time. As an Octogenarian, I find taking it easy & being non-productive is productive! I know there are some who feel we need to be busy all the time to show we’re productive. It has been said that when we feel stressed, we tend to lose our sense of humor. But laughing out loud is known to be good for our mental health. I feel, by laughing we embrace our inner joy that makes us feel happier and calm. Being calm, restores, good health and energy levels. It raises our mental acquity and concentration. It also inspires us to create and enjoy ourselves. I also feel it slows down the aging process. The last month of the year has begun and for the residents of Delhi , todays newspapers gave the 'good' news - apparently for the first time in 23 days the air quality of Delhi 'improved' to 'poor' category. What was frightening was not that the AQI has improved to poor , but our acceptance of the fact that air quality has deteriorated over the last half a decade. Not questioning the status quo is one of the biggest barriers to innovation and transformation. Be it business plans , brand plans , therapy plans - all are based on a set of assumptions - many of the assumptions are not challenged and as a result the brands gasp for air for while consuming disproportionate resources in order to grow. And just like quick solutions cannot fix air pollution, similarly 'jugaad' solutions can not help a brand grow sustainably. So as the business plans for the coming year are prepared , do ask questions that challenge the status quo, address the root cause and eschew quick fix solutions. I have found a passion in organizational psychology and whenever I have a moment, I read, listen to podcasts and think about a specific angle. And this morning at 7 am, while waiting for my connecting flight in LHR, I found a quiet moment to write about a topic I have been thinking since a few weeks: the quality and “harmony” of the vibration in teams. When I say harmony of vibration, I don’t mean “no disagreement”. On the contrary, I mean the creative energy we sense when discussing counter perspectives, leveraging the group's intelligence, finding a path forward and pivoting in an intuitively aligned way. In this state, teams deeply feel the same purpose, their actions build upon one another, and there is a sense of holding hands in the group to master the external challenges. A bit like when bees are forming a swarm and there is a heightened energy as they scout for adequate resources to support the future swarm and spread chemical signals that play a key role in coordinating the swarm and ensuring the cohesion of the honeybee community. The honeybee swarm type of team vibration brings out the feelings of being fulfilled, energised, proud and a deep sense of joy and compassion. This is exactly how I feel when I am in discussions about our Compass Focus Areas and cross-functional project Catalyst with which we envision to contribute to the success of our R&D teams. I deeply care about internal engagement, and I am a believer on the power an engaged organization has in driving performance; in our case, when we perform, more patients get access to medicines and vaccines.   We put tons of effort and all our brains to design engagement approaches intentionally; we foster a feedback loop, a conversation, and a discussion where the leaders share the direction of travel to reach our ambition, and the what and the how to make it happen, and our people share their views and ideas on how this ambition will be realized in every country. All taking part. That is when engagement happens.   As a result, for the past couple of years, we have been getting the highest engagement scores. And that’s one way you can measure you are doing things right. Another way is by seeing the understanding and commitment of your people to the company’s vision, which I proudly experienced this week. We held a session we called “Ask Our Leaders Anything” where around two thousand people from Southeast Asia to Latin America connected and interacted with the Emerging Markets Leadership Team through questions and comments. It was through how on point these questions and comments were that I could see a well-informed, focused and in tuned Emerging Markets.   My final reflection on building internal engagement: the content is important, but how you deliver the content is equally important, and sometimes you need to create that boost of energy in the room and sometimes you need to just simply open spaces for straightforward interaction. Listen to the organization and determine when the right time is for each. Lastly, show how you care for people by communicating with honesty and transparency, inspiring with humanity, and being your true selves, so much so that people feel they are in a psychological safe space to ask literally anything; and of course, respond with authenticity. This is at the core of how we build trust and strengthen engagement.   In the end, and through our GSK culture of being ambitious for patients and accountable for impact while doing the right thing, we are seamlessly connected, all thriving for one goal, which is to positively impact the life of more than 2.5 billion people in the next decade.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗡𝗼 𝗔𝗴𝗲 I recently read a fascinating article titled "𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞?" in the 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰, and this sparked my curiosity about the true determinants of effective leadership. The recent focus on President Biden's age sparks a crucial conversation: Should age dictate a leader's effectiveness? Leaders like Nelson Mandela, Warren Buffet, and Janet Yellen demonstrate that age can bring unparalleled wisdom and experience. 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐢𝐬𝐦 Mandatory retirements and age limits are blunt tools that often ignore individual capabilities and perpetuate ageism. Evaluating leaders based on their competence, not just their years, is vital. Health and vigor are essential, but they should be assessed individually, not judged by an arbitrary age standard. 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 Effective leadership means knowing when to pass the torch and fostering the next generation's growth. As F. Scott Fitzgerald suggested, true intelligence is holding two opposing ideas at once: valuing both the wisdom that comes with age and the innovation that youth brings. 𝘈𝘨𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 ONLY 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳'𝘴 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴. He can be senior experienced or junior one. But should have abilities and capabilities and maturity to drive self and teams. we should not relate leadership with age.
