This past April, I had the pleasure of joining other members of the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers to mentor a group of local Girl Scouts. The “Project Law Track” program introduces young teen Scouts to the field of law. Designed by girls for girls, “Project Law Track” was created by the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

The interactive series focused on the American legal system, professionalism in the practice of law, and ethics, and culminated with a mock trial. The participants prepared for and as a trial attorney in a mock trial held in the DuPage County Courthouse. All of the Girl Scouts were amazing. They served as prosecutors or defense attorneys, and put on an impressive mock trial!

As a former Girl Scout, I understand and appreciate the value of programs that open the minds of young women to new opportunities. I am grateful to the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers and Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago & Northwest Indiana for the experience.

  • Cook County Jury Trial Leads to Successful Defense of $13.65 Million Dollar Claim

In April 2017, I tried a six-day jury trial in Cook County along with associate attorney, Dimitrios E. Spyratos. Our clients were a commercial trucking company and its driver. Our client driver was operating a van downtown on a sunny morning. He stopped at a stop sign in preparation for turning left at an intersection. He turned and struck the 18 year-old pedestrian plaintiff. The tire of the van ran over her foot, causing a permanent scar and an injury to the superficial branch of the…

The tire of the van ran over her foot, causing a permanent scar and an injury to the superficial branch of the peroneal nerve in her foot. The plaintiff claimed she was in the crosswalk the entire time; we disputed that. We further disputed the nature and extent of her claimed permanent injuries, including the recent surgery to the foot resulting in another scar up her lower leg and her claimed inability to walk more than 10 minutes. Plaintiff offered the testimony of 3 doctors who supported her permanency claim for the next 50+ years. We also argued that plaintiff failed to timely seek medical care. After six days of trial, the plaintiff's attorney asked the jury for $13.65 million. We suggested $60-$90,000 at most. After deliberating for over two hours, the jury awarded plaintiff just over $70,000, including a 40% reduction of damages for plaintiff's comparative negligence in contributing to the accident, and a further reduction of over $3,000 for her failure to mitigate damages. We are thrilled to have delivered a huge win for our clients!

  • Not Guilty Verdict for Commercial Driver

I recently completed a jury trial where my client, a commercial trucker, rear-ended a SUV on the expressway; there were 8 vehicles involved in the collision. My client disputed that his conduct caused the accident; rather, it was plaintiff's impatient driving. The plaintiff claimed a closed head injury (depression, PTSD, post concussive syndrome, anxiety following a head contusion and documented brain bleed), and orthopedic injuries to his neck, back and hips along with medical/psychological…

My client disputed that his conduct caused the accident; rather, it was plaintiff's impatient driving. The plaintiff claimed a closed head injury (depression, PTSD, post concussive syndrome, anxiety following a head contusion and documented brain bleed), and orthopedic injuries to his neck, back and hips along with medical/psychological treatment spanning nearly 4 years and significant lost wages. Plaintiff would not reduce his pre-trial demand from $660k. The case culminated in a 5-day jury trial where plaintiff asked the jury for over $1 million. After 62 minutes of deliberation, the jury returned a not guilty verdict in favor of my client. Suffice it to say that this was a great result for a wonderful client!

  • 50% Contribution Awarded at Jury Trial

In a recent jury trial, I defended an individual driver that rear-ended a plaintiff and his wife at an intersection. Plaintiff and his wife claimed that they stopped in the middle of the intersection for an emergency police or fire vehicle. A police officer testified that there was a "hot call" requiring emergency response at the time, and the police station was 1/2 mile away. My client disputed the presence of an emergency vehicle. Plaintiff underwent cervical fusion surgery at 2 levels of…

A police officer testified that there was a "hot call" requiring emergency response at the time, and the police station was 1/2 mile away. My client disputed the presence of an emergency vehicle. Plaintiff underwent cervical fusion surgery at 2 levels of his neck 90 days post-accident. My client disputed that the calcification found in the plaintiff's neck that resulted in the surgery was caused by the surgery, although plaintiff complained of radicular symptoms on the date of the accident with no prior complaints. Plaintiff had $130k in medical bills, 8 years of lost wages at $50k/year plus permanent disability and inability to work into the future. After 13 hours of deliberation, the jury found plaintiff 50% at fault for this accident and awarded him an amount equivalent only to his medical bills.

  • Million Dollar Recovery for Injured Motorcyclist

At their prior law firm, Kim Davis and her partner, E. Angelo Spyratos, represented a motorcyclist who was injured in a motor vehicle accident with a driver of a commercial vehicle. The motorcyclist sustained orthopedic injuries. The driver of the pick-up truck that struck the motorcyclist was delivering product for a retail store. Kim and Angelo recovered $1 million for their client promptly after initial party depositions were taken.
