Coloradans Continue to Be Prey for Scammers AARP, an AgeWise Colorado Provider, reported in the organization’s April 2024 Bulletin newsletter that Colorado consumers had fallen victims to fraud roughly 40,000 times in 2023, losing over $164 million total. The median loss per victim was $500. Imposter scams — criminals pretending to be other than who they are — led the list of frauds at nearly 14,000 incidents. Next highest was identity theft incidents at close to 13,000. AARP noted these figures do not include frauds that go unreported, which many believe is a substantial number. Mark Fetterhoff, manager for AARP’s ElderWatch program, says although younger people are victimized by scams in greater numbers than older adults, the latter tend to lose more money because they have more assets. Colorado has recently streamlined its fraud prevention website at https://lnkd.in/dUsAJbCd to make it easier for victims to report suspected fraud. The website also has information on scams to be aware of, and you can sign up to receive fraud tips and alerts. If you are a fraud victim, contact any financial institution that’s involved and also report it to local police, the Colorado attorney general (https://coag.gov/), and the FBI. In a case of identity theft, file a report at https://lnkd.in/eb9DHkyk and consider freezing your credit at the three credit bureaus. An AARP FraudWatch helpline is available at 877-908-3360. Also note that if you have disputes with a business you have patronized, the Colorado attorney general’s office now has a consumer mediation program to help people through informal negotiations as one way to resolve such disputes. See https://lnkd.in/gj4TxpY6 for more information on this. Provided by Ken Burrows, AWC staff writer.

I always get a kick out of a law enforcement agency going the extra step to help out a business, an individual business. Vail police threatening 180 jail time for using someone else's season pass. Since there is only 1 ski area in Eagle County, @Vailmtn the police are only helping vail. Summit County never says anything like this, but Summit County has 3 different owners of its resorts Nice to know the police are so concerned about crime in Vail, https://risk-mgmt.co/dtx @RecreationLaw #SkiAreaLaw #SkiLaw #Criminal #CuttingBoundaryRope #SaveYourSeason #SkiAreaLaw #RecLaw #RecreationLaw

An American Nightmare Imagine being a senior citizen with a life of accomplishments behind you only to quickly realize, much too late, that you and your money have unexpectedly been parted. We can all relate to the scenario involving an elderly person being scammed out of their money. The incredulous, unethical dregs trolling the internet and phone lines just to illuminate when a dementia-age person spares some change to their greedy little palms has now become a beyond dangerous situation for even the uninvolved. Lo-Letha Hall, an Uber driver, showed up at the door of an elderly man who was in the process of being financially taken advantage of. The dark, twisted scenario plays out with the elderly man, William J. Brock, killing Ms. Hall thinking she was part of the criminal incident. At this point, it simply appears that Ms. Hall was an unknowing party to said crime. So, Mr. Brock is heading to court to face prison time, Ms. Hall is dead with her family shattered, and no one has apprehended the actual criminal who set this horrific train off the rails. America has a responsibility to protect our most vulnerable citizens. Law enforcement has the ability to enhance their technological capabilities to intercept these types of scams, even when they come from overseas. There is no excuse for an incident like this one to take place ONCE let alone in the future. Let's make a concerted effort to increase our skills by coordinating investigations across agencies and internationally to prevent tragic occurrences that all start with the supremely entitled criminal. #police #policeofficer #policetraining #policeofficers #policedepartment #policejobs #policechief #policecommemorationday #lawenforcement #emergencymanagement #emergencypreparedness #emergencyresponse #emergencyservices #emergency #emergencyplanning #emt #emts #firesafety #firefighter #firesafety #firefighters #firefightertraining #publicsafety #nypd #ppd #pfd #nyfd #phillypolice #philadelphiapolice #philadelphiapolicedepartment #lapd #activeshooter https://lnkd.in/e2DTtNM2

This story aired last night and an hour later our coop board (for a mid-size coop in Queens) met with competing brokers about the building's insurance renewal. In a story of real life implications of all this, 2 competing brokers were in agreement on below: 1. 10-15% annual increase in ins. premiums was a small to modest increase 2. It would be difficult to get other comparable quotes because # of carriers that would write policies for our buildings grossly shrunk in the NY market 3. Even ones that would offer a policy usually have a Labor Law exclusion 4. Labor Law claims are 2nd most prevalent they see now for buildings 5. If our building has a Labor Law suit in the next year, legitimate or not (entirely possible for a building in middle of a LL11 renovations), next premiums would double or we could lose coverage entirely. This wasn't a high rise building in Manhattan, it's a 60-65 unit building in Queens owned by mostly middle-class people that bear these costs directly through maintenance increases and assessments. One of these fake claims could absolutely decimate finances of 60+ families. Taking off the lawyer hat for a minute, that is disturbing!
Fraud? Really? Please watch and share and repost the disturbing video below to social media. I'm old enough to remember that we used to call politicians "liars", and plaintiff lawyers "ambulance chasers". ABC News investigative reporting (the excellent Kristin Thorne) continues to demonstrate to NYers what's actually going on with the systemic and fraudulent abuses of NY's one-of-a-kind Labor Law statute and personal injury system. NY's insanely high rents, building costs, home ownership, insurance, and cost of living are all a direct product of this broken system and a ridiculous more-than-a-century-old scaffold law that no other state in the nation would even think of keeping on the books (even Illinois). The incredibly lucrative nature of NY's automatic liability system has drawn the vultures (attorneys, politicians, litigation funders, and criminals) that are feasting on NY and bleeding us all dry. Thank you Kristin Thorne for shining the light! https://lnkd.in/eCm2YX_5 #repealthelaborlaw #RICO #saveNYfromtheLaborLaw #laborlaw240 #laborlaw #fraudscheme #kristinthorne #abcnews #nylegislature #governorhochul #legislativereform #corruption #affordablehousingshortage #laborlaw #silenttax #highestcostofliving #fraud #fraudonthecourt #nyisdrowninginlawsuitcorruption #attorneygeneral #attorneygeneraljames #prosecutors #USAttorney #DOJ
